RAINFALL & RIVER FLOW WEEKLY REPORT OTAGO REGIONAL COUNCIL Thursday 19 March 2015 – Wednesday 25 March 2015 Described below is the weekly rainfall totals recorded at selected rain gauges and the average weekly flow in Otago’s main rivers for the week ending at midnight on 25 March 2015. Rainfall Moa Flat had the most amount of rainfall last week, with 21 mm recorded. Merino Ridges recorded only 2 mm. River Flows Flows in the Manuherikia River, Shotover River, Kawarau River, Waipahi River, and the Clutha River at Balclutha were below normal. The Kakanui River at Clifton Falls was the only flow recorder having above normal flows. Table 1. ANGLERS’ NOTICE FOR FISH AND GAME REGION CONSERVATION ACT 1987 FRESHWATER FISHERIES REGULATIONS 1983 Pursuant to section 26R(3) of the Conservation Act 1987, the Minister of Conservation approves the following Anglers’ Notice, subject to the First and Second Schedules of this Notice, for the following Fish and Game Region: Otago NOTICE This Notice shall come into force on the 1st day of October 2017. 1. APPLICATION OF THIS NOTICE 1.1 This Anglers’ Notice sets out the conditions under which a current licence holder may fish for sports fish in the area to which the notice relates, being conditions relating to— a.) the size and limit bag for any species of sports fish: b.) any open or closed season in any specified waters in the area, and the sports fish in respect of which they are open or closed: c.) any requirements, restrictions, or prohibitions on fishing tackle, methods, or the use of any gear, equipment, or device: d.) the hours of fishing: e.) the handling, treatment, or disposal of any sports fish. 1.2 This Anglers’ Notice applies to sports fish which include species of trout, salmon and also perch and tench (and rudd in Auckland /Waikato Region only). 1.3 Perch and tench (and rudd in Auckland /Waikato Region only) are also classed as coarse fish in this Notice. 1.4 Within coarse fishing waters (as defined in this Notice) special provisions enable the use of coarse fishing methods that would otherwise be prohibited. 1.5 Outside of coarse fishing waters a current licence holder may fish for coarse fish wherever sports fishing is permitted, subject to the general provisions in this Notice that apply for that region. -

Clutha River catchment Water quality and ecosystem health July 2011 to June 2012 Water quality Summary To assess the current state of water quality, the Otago Regional Council (ORC) All of the sites in the upper monitored 37 river and stream sites in the Clutha catchment between July 2011 and Clutha, had either excellent or June 2012. Most sites were monitored every two months, but five further sites good water quality. Sites were classified using a water quality index. Otago was poorer, particularly in the Pomahaka River tributaries. The Manuherikia River and the Heriot Burn supported the healthiest macroinvertebrate communities. The Lindis River supported growths of both Didymosphenia geminata and Phormidium. Brown trout were common at all monitoring sites. However eels were absent at sites above the Clutha dams. Water quality index ORC uses a water quality index (WQI) derived from median values of six indicator variables, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (percent saturation), ammonical nitrogen (NH4), nitrite-nitrate nitrogen (NNN), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). WORTHY Schwarzhans, W., Scofield, R.P., Tennyson, A.J.D., Worthy, J.P., and Worthy, T.H. 2012. Fish remains, mostly otoliths, from the non−marine early Miocene of Otago, New Zealand. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 57 (2): 319–350. Fish remains described from the early Miocene lacustrine Bannockburn Formation of Central Otago, New Zealand, con− sist of several thousand otoliths and one skeleton plus another disintegrated skull. One species, Mataichthys bictenatus Schwarzhans, Scofield, Tennyson, and T. Worthy gen. et sp. nov., an eleotrid, is established on a skeleton with otoliths in situ. The soft embedding rock and delicate, three−dimensionally preserved fish bones were studied by CT−scanning tech− nology rather than physical preparation, except where needed to extract the otolith. Fourteen species of fishes are de− scribed, 12 new to science and two in open nomenclature, representing the families Galaxiidae (Galaxias angustiventris, G. bobmcdowalli, G. brevicauda, G. papilionis, G. parvirostris, G. tabidus), Retropinnidae (Prototroctes modestus, P. vertex), and Eleotridae (Mataichthys bictenatus, M. procerus, M. rhinoceros, M. taurinus). These findings prove that most of the current endemic New Zealand/southern Australia freshwater fish fauna was firmly established in New Zea− land as early as 19–16 Ma ago. Most fish species indicate the presence of large fishes, in some cases larger than Recent species of related taxa, for instance in the eleotrid genus Mataichthys when compared to the extant Gobiomorphus. The finding of a few otoliths from marine fishes corroborates the age determination of the Bannockburn Formation as the Altonian stage of the New Zealand marine Tertiary stratigraphy.
