Free Music and Trash Culture: the Reconfiguration of Musical Value Online

Music appears to lose value insofar as it is potentially infinitely reproducible at little cost: claims have been made that music thereby loses economic value; and perhaps affective value also. In the first case, music is not worth what it once was because copyright owners are no longer being paid for it. In losing income (the argument goes), less money will be invested in future music production: music therefore becomes less ‘good’ (culturally and aesthetically valuable). In the second case, it is suggested that online superabundance renders music worth less in that personal engagements with it are transient, frivolous, and ad hoc: nobody has time to listen to all that music, and the surfeit implies that musical value thereby depreciates. -

[Out Human Beat Breakcore] [In Sfx Waves]
[IN HUMAN BEAT BREAKCORE] [OUT HUMAN BEAT BREAKCORE] [IN SFX WAVES] HELLO THERE AND WELCOME TO THIS EPISODE OF SOUNDSURFING. I’M YOUR CAPTAIN BEN GOSSELIN. THIS EPISODE WE’LL BE HEADING INTO THE ROUGH WATERS OF BREAKCORE, A GENRE OF MUSIC THAT QUITE LITERALLY SOUNDS LIKE A BUNCH OF LOUD RANDOM DRUM NOISES AT HIGH SPEEDS. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTING TO LOOK AT BECAUSE MY FIRST THOUGHTS WHEN I HEARD IT WERE “IS THIS REALLY MUSIC?” AND YOURS WILL PROBABLY BE THE SAME. SO LET'S JUMP RIGHT IN AND SET SAIL. HOLD ON TO SOMETHING THOUGH BECAUSE ITS ABOUT TO GET ROUGH. [OUT SFX WAVES] LET ME START BY ASKING YOU A QUESTION. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF AMEN BREAK? NO? YOU PROBABLY HAVE HEARD IT. [F IN AMEN BREAK] NOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS? THIS IS AMEN BREAK, IT'S A FAMOUS DRUM LOOP PERFORMED BY THE 1960S FUNK AND SOUL OUTFIT THE WINSTONS. AND LET ME TELL YOU, THIS DRUM LOOP IS MAGICAL. ITS USED IN SO MUCH STUFF AND IS PRACTICALLY THE BASIS OF BREAKCORE. ALMOST ALL BREAKCORE USES THIS DRUM LOOP AS A SKELETON FOR THE BEATS YOU HEAR BUT YOU WOULDN’T NOTICE IT AT FIRST GLANCE. [XFADE AMEN BREAK] [XFADE GUILTY WHEN DRUNK] A LOT OF BREAKCORE SONGS BUILD THEIR BEAT AROUND THE STRUCTURE OF AMEN BREAK AND LAY ON MORE ELEMENTS TO IT. SUCH AS CHANGING OUT THE DRUMS, WARPING THE PITCH AND STRETCH, AND EVEN SUBSTITUTING ONE BEAT WITH TONS OF REALLY QUICK BEATS. DOING THINGS LIKE THESE MAKES EACH SONG SOUND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EVEN IF IT THEY DO HAVE THE SAME CORE BEAT. -

The Entrepreneurial Process in the Rise of Electronic Music Martina Montauti University of Lugano Institute of Management [email protected]
Paper to be presented at the DRUID Society Conference 2014, CBS, Copenhagen, June 16-18 Between inertia and change: The entrepreneurial process in the rise of electronic music Martina Montauti University of Lugano Institute of Management [email protected] Filippo Carlo Wezel University of Lugano Institute of Management [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the structural conditions under which a reduced number of entrepreneurial events is observed. Hypotheses are tested in the context of the music industry, and in particular during the rise and establishment of electronic music. Empirical evidence provides support to the arguments advanced in the paper and implications for the relevant literatures are sketched. Jelcodes:M13,- BETWEEN INERTIA AND CHANGE: THE ENTREPRENEURIAL PROCESS IN THE RISE OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC **Draft paper: please do not quote or cite** INTRODUCTION Sure enough, entrepreneurial events keep occurring despite the high failure rates of new ventures (Aldrich and Ruef, 2006; Caves, 1998; Klepper and Graddy, 1990). This well-documented empirical regularity suggests that a prime exception in the entrepreneurial process pertains to inaction, rather than to actions that prove unsuccessful (Carroll and Khessina, 2005). As long as the understanding of exceptions helps a more comprehensive grasp of regularities, a set of notable works has focused on the cases in which entrepreneurial action has not always been promptly realized (Carroll and Hannan, 2000; Lomi, Larsen and Wezel, 2010; Sørensen and Sorenson, 2003). The antecedents of entrepreneurial inertia (Ruef, 2006), namely of the inaction resulting from the procrastination of market entry, have been located in the environment and in specific characteristics of the entrepreneurial organizations (Kuilman and Li, 2006; Kuilman, Vermeulen and Li, 2009; Schoonhoven, Eisenhardt and Lyman, 1990). -
