Emotionally Triggered Involuntary Violent Behaviour Not Attributed to a Mental Disorder: Conceptual Criteria and Their Reliability Emotionally Triggered Involuntary Violent Behaviour not Attributed to a Mental Disorder: Conceptual Criteria and Their Reliability Pierre Mauritz Joubert Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Psychiatry) Supervisor: Prof C.W. Van Staden Department of Psychiatry School of Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences University of Pretoria July 2014 Acknowledgments I would not have been able to do this thesis on my own. People and institutions were involved who made it possible for me to complete the thesis. I dearly thank the following: Prof. C.W. Van Staden, my supervisor. He was a teacher, guide, and supporter during this endeavour. I am grateful that I could make use of his invaluable expertise and knowledge. Prof. J.L. Roos, Head of the Department of Psychiatry. His support as Head of Department made possible a space in which the research could be done. What he made available is broader than can be described. It included, but is not limited to, a motivation for a total of seven months study leave (which I took in periods) that proved very necessary to complete the thesis. The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Pretoria for allowing the doctoral thesis, approving a bursary to support it, for the use of its information resources, and allowing for study leave with remuneration. Ms. M.A. Mabena, Chief Executive Officer of Weskoppies Hospital. She ultimately made the study leave, which I had to take to complete the thesis, possible. Dr. G.P. Grobler, who was willing to act as Independent Evaluator for the five précis. The study participants: you know who you are. I appreciate your time, effort, and constructive criticism. My colleagues at Weskoppies Hospital, who supported me by lessening the official work-load from time to time and for standing in for my duties while I was on study leave. I also thank colleagues for their participation in the study and for their useful comments to me after their participation. A special word of thanks My wife, Dr. M.J. Jakuszko-Joubert, who was a friend and colleague during the years I worked on the thesis. Her love and support was invaluable. Ms. M. Lee, the information specialist of the Medical Library, who helped me find books and documents relevant to my research. I owe her even greater thanks for showing me additional ways of obtaining online documents through the University of Pretoria and assisting me with the correct abbreviations of journals. Ms. S. Gillmore, an information specialist of the Law Library, who helped me find cases of possible relevance to the study. Ms. L. Viljoen, also an information specialist of the Law Library, who helped me find cases of possible relevance to the study. Ms. J. Jordaan, the research consultant of the Departments of Statistics, who checked the data and operators of Part 2 of the study with me. Dr. L. Fletcher, the statistician of the Department of Statistics, who guided me through the statistical analysis of the data of Part 2 of the study. Mr. S. James, the departmental administrator, who showed me how to create an appropriate data sheet in Microsoft Excel for Part 2 of the study. My daughter, Ms. C.M. Joubert, who studied hard during her final year at school, thereby helping by setting my mind at ease. Last, but not least, my parents, the late Mr. G.M. Joubert and Mrs. L.N. Joubert who encouraged in me a desire to learn and study from a young age. i Contents List of Tables v Abstract 1 Chapter 1: Introduction and Overview 2 Background and Relevance 3 Overview of the Study 5 Chapter 2: Emotionally Triggered Involuntary Violent Behaviour and Automatism 8 Automatism: an Unclear Concept 10 Chapter 3: Methodology of the study of Emotionally Triggered Involuntary Violent Behaviour 13 Part 1: The Conceptual Component of the Study 13 Part 2: The Reliability Component of the Study 23 Chapter 4: Violent Behaviour in ‘ETIVB’ 37 Violent Behaviour in „ETIVB‟ is Defined by the Consequences of Physical Injury or Physical Damage 37 Violent Behaviour in „ETIVB‟ is Observable 39 The Features of Behaviour in ETIVB can be Described 40 Chapter 5: What Counts as ‘Emotionally Triggered’ in ‘ETIVB’? This study conceptualised emotionally triggered involuntary violent behaviour (ETIVB), developed criteria for the identification of ETIVB, and examined their validity and reliability. South Africa criminal courts allow for a defence called “non-pathological criminal incapacity”. It refers inter alia to extreme emotional arousal triggering involuntary violent behaviour. This is usually called an “emotional storm” or a so-called “psychological blow automatism”. Psychiatrists are often called to give expert testimony in this regard, but there is no conceptual clarity or criteria upon which to base it. This difficulty is compounded by the requirement set by the criminal courts that the behaviour may not be attributed to a mental disorder (in this thesis the terms mental disorder and mental illness are used interchangeably). The first advance in obtaining clarity was afforded by focusing on the behaviour as distinct from 1) legal and jurisprudential considerations as well as 2) whether the behaviour is (not) attributed to mental disorder. The subsequent research questions driving the study were, “what counts as ETIVB?” In particular, what counts respectively as „emotional triggered‟, „involuntary‟, „violent‟, and „behaviour‟.

K2 PROMOTIONS EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES TO THE CORRIE SANDERS FAMILY VENICE, CA (September 25, 2012) K2 Promotions was very saddened to hear about the death of former heavyweight world champion Corrie Sanders over the weekend. The 46-year-old Sanders was shot in an apparent robbery in Britz, near Pretoria, while celebrating the birthday of a family member. “It was a shock to Vitali and Wladimir as well as myself when I heard the news” said Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions. “Corrie was a world champion boxer and a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with outside the ring.” The Klitschko brothers released a statement calling him a “great person”. “We were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Corrie Sanders and we want to express our sincere condolences to his family,” read the statement. “We will remember Corrie as a great person both inside and outside the ring. He was a great fighter with a big heart who always positively represented the sport of boxing.” Sanders will always be linked to the Klitschko brothers, having fought both of them. He won the WBO World Title with a shocking win over Wladimir on MARCH 8, 2003 in Hannover, Germany, winning the WBO World Title. In his following bout, Sanders traveled to Los Angeles, California on APRIL 24, 2004 and challenged older brother Vitali for the vacant WBC World Title. Fighting valiantly throughout the fight, Sanders was stopped in the eighth round when referee Jon Schorle deemed that he had taken too much punishment. “The fight at Staples Center against Vitali was the first promotion of K2 and I have very fond memories of working with Corrie and his team.

  • Analysis of Male Boxers' Nicknames
THE JOURNAL OF TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC AND ACADEMIC PURPOSES Vol. 6, No 1, 2018, pp. 126 UDC: 81‟1/‟4:796 https://doi.org/10.22190/JTESAP1801001O ANALYSIS OF MALE BOXERS’ NICKNAMES Darija Omrčen1, Hrvoje Pečarić2 1University of Zagreb, Faculty of Kinesiology, Croatia E-Mail: [email protected] 2Primary school Andrija Palmović, Rasinja, Croatia E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract. Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? Skipper (1989, 103) alleges that nicknames “often serve as a miniature character sketch”. When discussing nicknames in baseball, Gmelch (2006, 129) elucidates that sobriquets frequently communicate something about the players using them, e.g.

  • Anthony Joshua Did It the Right Way
Anthony Joshua did it the right way By Bart Barry- Saturday at Wembley Stadium in London, before a crowd of 90,000 or so, British heavyweight Anthony Joshua defeated by 11th-round technical knockout Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko to become the undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion of the world – in an excellent and valorous four-knockdown brawl anticipated by nothing on Klitschko’s resume. Any impulses to lead a treatment of Joshua’s victory with Klitschko’s age or previous knockout losses to men unremarkable as Ross Purity or Corrie Sanders should be stayed by a paragraph or two, even if they weren’t just now. What belongs at the top of any consideration of Joshua from this moment till the end of his career is that he became recognized as heavyweight champion the right way. Perhaps Klitschko was no longer what we considered him in his 30s but he was still the best prizefighter above 200 pounds in the world – as there is nearly no doubt he’d’ve beaten Tyson Fury in a rematch the Gypsy King avoided shamelessly. Klitschko’s reign was, again, unremarkable as any in the modern era, a string of mostly mediocre performances against mostly mediocre opponents with occasionally some emphatic violence against an occasional, emphatically bad opponent. He left Saturday’s ring entirely diminished in physical stature if not legacy. Klitschko’s legacy was to remain the same, win or lose; he got dropped and stopped by, let’s see if it’s possible to get this right, A YOUNG HUNGRY LION and therefore will not rise in historians’ esteem anytime soon; but if Klitschko’d’ve won Saturday historians’d’ve moved him no higher in historic ranking because no one would yet know if it were feat or farce till Joshua revealed his true self in the decade that followed, sort of the way aficionados’ esteem for Fury underwent a nineminute revisionist fever after Klitschko dropped Joshua in round 6.
