St. Louis Ambush Florida Tropics 2018-19 SEASON: 2017-18 SEASON: 1-0 OVERALL 10-12 OVERALL 0-0 HOME 5-6 HOME 1-0 AWAY 5-6 AWAY 0-0 HEAD TO HEAD THIS WEEKEND’S GAMES • The Ambush start the 2018-19 seaso with a two-game Florida road trip. They defeated the Orlando SeaWolves last night at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee in dramatic fashion, winning 5-4 in an overtime shootout. • After tonight’s contest and before their own home opener, the Ambush will play one more on the road when they visit the Harrisburg Heat next Saturday, December 8. The Ambush home opener is slated for Sunday, December 16 at 3:05 p.m. CST when they host the Kansas City Comets.

FAMILIAR FACES IN DIFFERENT PLACES • Two former members of the Ambush will be among the Tropics players greeting the visitors tonight. Forward Freddy Moojen and midfielder Anthony Arico both played previously for St. Louis and now wear the Tropics’ colors.

NEW FACES ON THE AMBUSH • After struggling to a 3-19 finish last season, Ambush Head Coach Hewerton held open tryouts in Brazil in addition to the traditional summer tryouts in St. Louis. Three new faces on the Ambush roster (midfielder Mario Marcos, defender Felipe Silva and defender Magui Souza) came from those tryouts in Brazil. • Two other acquisitions help give the Ambush a new look. Speedy midfielder Antonio Manfut was signed as a free agent during the off-season and defender Douglas Dos Santos was acquired earier this month in a transaction with Harrisburg.

DIVISION RIVALS • Another aspect that will add to the intensity and importance of this weekend’s games is the fact that the Ambush and both Florida teams are part of the same division, the MASL South Central Division. All games within the division, whether early in the season or late, affect each team’s chances of making the playoffs.

LEAGUE LEADER • In addition to the new faces on the Ambush, defender Rob Acosta is another player worth watching. Acosta led the league last season in blocked shots (49) last season and captured the MASL’s Defender of the Year Award.

LAST NIGHT FOR THE AMBUSH • One of the stars of last night’s game for the Ambush was backup goalkeeper Casey Clark. Clark played the entire game in goal, including stopping the SeaWolves in the best-of-three shootout period that ended the contest. • Another standout for the Ambush last night was newcomer Mario Marcos, who tallied two of his team’s five goals. THE ST. LOUIS AMBUSH

The St. Louis Ambush began as an expansion club in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for the 2013-14 season and joined the MASL for the 2014- 15 season. The 2018-19 season is the team's sixth. The Ambush resurrected the name of the original St. Louis Ambush, who played in the National Professional Soccer League from 1992 to 2000 and won the league championship for the 1994-95 season. They remain the only St. Louis professional soccer team to win a league title. The Ambush play all home games at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri, a western suburb of St. Louis. The ownership of the club is 100% local.

THE MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE

The Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) has roots in the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL). The PASL began in 1997 and today serves as the developmental league for the MASL. October 2008 marked the debut of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL). To distinguish the PASL pro division from the PASL premier division, they were often referred to as PASL-Pro and PASL-Premier. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) season, the MISL announced on March 17, 2014 that they would not have a 2014-15 season. The Pennsylvania Roar folded and the six remaining MISL teams (Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave, Missouri Comets, Rochester Lancers, St. Louis Ambush and Syracuse Silver Knights) joined with PASL-Pro teams to form the new Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).

The Major Arena Soccer League represents the highest level of professional arena soccer in the world. The MASL features teams across North America, with 17 teams playing coast-to-coast in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The MASL is currently incorporated as a 501(c)6 not for profit corporation formed to promote the business and sport of arena soccer.

THE INDOOR GAME

Professional indoor soccer was developed to appeal to sports fans around the world. The indoor game combines technical skills and strategy that appeals to fans of outdoor soccer, but adds speed and excitement, along with the “no ties” scoring model that appeals to fans of other sports. The fast- paced, fiercely competitive game is played on artificial turf on a hockey-rink-sized field surrounded by dasher boards and Plexiglas with eight-foot high by 14-foot wide goals receded into the end boards. Creative dribbling, pinpoint passing, acrobatic goalkeeping and rugged defensive play are all skills demonstrated by MASL players. A typical MASL game features end-to-end-action resulting in approximately 60 shots and 11 goals per game. Each game consists of four 15-minute quarters. Other unique characteristics of the MASL include action-packed power plays and free substitution of players while play continues.

The first recorded “indoor soccer” match was held in 1885 in a roller skating rink in Newark, New Jersey. Since that time, a variety of leagues have staged sporadic indoor soccer games and tournaments. In 1950, the National Soccer League held a complete season of indoor soccer games, including some on local television. The modern era of professional indoor soccer commenced in 1978, when the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) began play with six US teams, coinciding in 1979 with the NASL's indoor league, comprised of 10 teams. Games were played in four 15-minute quarters.

THE MASL SEASON

The 2018-19 MASL regular season began on November 30, 2018 and concludes on April 14, 2019. Each MASL team plays a 24-game season consisting of 12 home games and 12 road games. Playoffs will begin at the conclusion of the regular season and the playoff schedule will be announced when playoff teams are known and arena schedules have been locked in.
