Course Description This course will introduce students to the basics of video game design. Students will learn the basics of coding and game design to create a 2D retro video game using the free version of Game Maker Studio software. Students will be required to work as part of a team and may delegate a variety of tasks among team members. This course will be focused on teaching the basics in a way that enables students to seek further learning focused on their tasks in order to support developing their game. Games will be posted online available for free download.

Students will also study through playing a variety of video games demonstrating traditional and innovative mechanics and art styles. A playing station will be available during class time and students may spend up to 30 minutes each class session playing games and completing a written reflection. Students will be required to complete one hour of weekly homework. This homework may involve playing specific games or putting in extra time on individual tasks for the team.

Attendance Students will receive double credit if they have perfect attendance and end the course with a passing grade. If you must miss a class, please communicate that with your team and with me. You will be expected to work from home to make up missed time. One class session is considered four hours of work time.

Grading Policy All students should expect to receive an “A.” This will require that you attend class regularly in order to participate in demonstrations and work with your team. Students will be graded on participation, individual assignments, and their final group project. Students will selfassess their work collectively within their development team.

Supplies While all necessary supplies will be provided, students are encouraged to bring a sketchbook, the book Game Maker Language: An In Depth Guide, headphones, and a flash drive.

If a home computer is available students should install free software. If students wish to port their game to iOS we will need to raise funds to purchase the necessary module upgrade for Game Maker. All art supplies will also be made available.
