When Life Gives You Lemons, "Get In Formation:" A Black Feminist Analysis of Beyonce's Visual Album, Lemonade Abstract Beyonce's visual album, Lemonade, has been considered a Black feminist piece of work because of the ways in which it centralizes the experiences of Black women, including their love relationships with Black men, their relationships with their mothers and daughters, and their relationships with other Black women. The album shows consistent themes of motherhood, the "love and trouble tradition," and Afrocentrism. Because of its hint of Afrocentrism, however, Lemonade can be argued as an anti Black feminist work because Afrocentrism holds many sexist beliefs of Black women. This essay will discuss the ways in which Lemonade's inextricable influences of Black feminism and Afrocentrism, along with other anti Black feminist notions, can be used as a consciousness-raising tool.

Pop-star Beyoncé Gisele Knowles-Carter is an interesting case in the discussion of colorism because her career has expressed a rich intimacy to Southern Black cul- ture and female empowerment while also playing into tropes of the mulatta “fancy girl,” whose relative proximity to whiteness adheres social value within mainstream culture. Finding aesthetic and thematic parallels between Beyoncé’s recent project Lemonade (2016) and Julie Dash’s cult-classic film Daughters of the Dust (1991) I draw a critical connection between Yellow Mary Peazant and Beyoncé, the prodigal child and the licentious “post-racial,” pop-star to argue that while Lemonade may not present the same critique of exclusionary Black womanhood present within Daughters of the Dust, reactions to the Beyoncé’s visual album and the “Formation” music video inadvertently demonstrate the longevity of harmful colorist prejudices and the disparaging of Black female sexual and creative agency within the Black community.

  • Intimacy, Authenticity and 'Worlding' in Beyoncé's Star Project
8 Intimacy, Authenticity and ‘Worlding’ in Beyoncé’s Star Project Phoebe Macrossan At the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, African-American pop star Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (known professionally as Beyoncé) performed a 12-song medley from her self-titled visual album, Beyoncé (2013), recreating its imagery across moving stages, treadmills, giant screens and a large troupe of dancers. To open this typically large-scale performance, she said, ‘MTV, welcome to my world’. This choice of words is interesting because, as a dominant figure in the popular music scene, Beyoncé hardly need introduce herself. What this moment captures, however, is the increasing personal intimacy of Beyoncé’s stardom, and her transition to the active creation and ownership of an identifiable, holistic ‘world’. This chapter argues that Beyoncé’s stardom extends beyond constructing a star image through media texts (Dyer, 1998, p. 10). I argue that her star project, her ongoing construction and maintenance of her stardom is creating an intimate, identifiable, holistic world: ‘Beyoncé World’. I use the term ‘star project’ because there is no beginning, middle and end as suggested by a term like ‘star narrative’, and because worlding is more encompassing and widespread than the term ‘star image’ put forward by Richard Dyer (1998, p. 10), although it is a continuation of it. 137 POPULAR MUSIC, STARS AND STARDOM Beyoncé World is created and maintained primarily through Beyoncé’s music videos and visual albums, but also across her concerts, performances and public appearances, and her social media accounts and website. Therefore, Beyoncé World is primarily created through media images, but, importantly, it also includes public appearances, actions and performances outside these visual images.

Why We Need to Get in “Formation”: The Rhetoric of Beyoncé Kira Marie Pratt | University of Denver Following the 2016 releases of the single “Formation” and the album Lemonade by singer Beyoncé, America broke into contentious debate regarding the political and thematic content of the songs and their accompanying videos. This essay explores the rhetoric of Beyoncé’s music video and song “Formation” and a portion of the visual album for Lemonade, analyzing how her depiction of black culture effectively opposes the dominant colorblind ideology of contemporary society. • Beyoncé's Slay Trick: the Performance of Black Camp and Its
Open Cultural Studies 2017; 1: 406–416 Research Article Constantine Chatzipapatheodoridis* Beyoncé’s Slay Trick: The Performance of Black Camp and its Intersectional Politics https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2017-0038 Received May 15, 2017; accepted October 31, 2017 Abstract: This article pays attention to African-American artist Beyoncé Knowles and her performance of black camp. Beyoncé’s stage persona and performances invite multiple ideological readings as to what pertains to her interpretation of gender, sexuality, and race. While cultural theory around the icon of Beyoncé has focused on her feminist and racial politics as well as her politicization of the black female body, a queer reading applied from the perspective of camp performance will concentrate on the artist’s queer appeal and, most importantly, on her exposition of black camp, an intersection of feminist, racial and queer poetics. By examining video and live performances, the scope of this article is to underline those queer nuances inherent in Beyoncé’s dramatisation of black femininity and the cultural pool she draws from for its effective staging. More specifically, since Beyoncé plays with tropes and themes that are common in camp culture, her performance relies on a meta-camping effect that interacts with African-American queer culture. This article, thus, traces black queer traditions and discourses in the artist’s praxis of black camp. Keywords: Beyoncé Knowles, black camp, feminism, race, queer, performance The history of camp, being associated with Western queer culture, largely points to a racially white past. When Susan Sontag intermingled with the pre-Stonewall American queer culture to formulate her seminal essay “Notes on Camp” (1964), the accruing perception of the then-existing camp catalog, reflected on the personae of Oscar Wilde and Christopher Isherwood, the starlets of Classic Hollywood, and the grandiosity of opera, attested to a white cultural production with marked European nuances.

  • The Art of 'Black Is King'
The Art of ‘Black Is King’: Beyoncé’s New Visual Album Involves Today’s Best Artists and Curators Alex Greenberger August 3, 2020 Still from BLACK IS KING (2020). TRAVIS MATTHEWS/©2020 PARKWOOD ENTERTINAMENT Each time Beyoncé releases new music, it might as well be considered an art-world event too. She’s been known to include works by vaunted artists in her videos, and with her husband Jay-Z, she’s built up an important collection of Black art. She’s also been spotted at important exhibitions for the likes of Kerry James Marshall and William N. Copley, and has been shot by some of today’s most important photographers. Her latest endeavor, an 85-minute visual album titled Black Is King that debuted on Disney+ on Friday, is no different in that respect. Intended as a reinterpretation of the story of The Lion King (Beyoncé did voice work as the character of Nala for the 2019 live-action remake), Black Is King is filled with artworks of note, and includes contributions from art-world figures behind the scenes. Below, a look at the many art-world connections borne out in Black Is King. Behind the Camera Black Is King was overseen by Beyoncé in collaboration with a team of seven co-directors, two of whom appeared in the film section of last year’s Whitney Biennial: Blitz Bazawule and Jenn Nkiru. In that exhibition, Bazawule, who also works as a musician under the moniker Blitz the Ambassador, showed his 2018 feature The Burial of Kojo, which focuses on a Ghanaian girl’s spiritual journey to save her father who is trapped in a mine.
