Midwest ACIS Comes to Milwaukee The annual Midwest Regional meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS) was held on the UWM campus from Thursday, October 14, through Saturday, October 16. ACIS is an interdisciplinary scholarly organization founded in 1960. The conference was organized by José Lanters, Nancy Walczyk, and John Gleeson, under the auspices of the Center for Celtic Studies. On Thursday evening, the meeting kicked off in great style with a reception for the delegates in County Clare Irish Inn, with Irish music by Cé. In the course of the evening, James Liddy’s autobiography, The Doctor’s House (Salmon Press, 2004), fresh off the plane from Ireland, was launched, read from, toasted, sold, and sanctioned by the presence of emeritus archbishop Rembert Weakland, who had joined us for the occasion. Friday was a full day, with an exciting academic program of eight panels of four speakers each, on topics ranging from literature and history to music, art and politics. Professor Seamus Caulfield’s Frank Gleeson, Tom Kilroy, James Liddy, plenary lecture, “Neolithic Rocks to Riverdance,” accompanied by Jose Lanters, Josephine Craven, Joe slides and presented with verve and humor, gave his enthusiastic Dowling and Eamonn O’Neill audience an insight into the many and varied aspects of the archaeological excavations at Céide Fields in Co. Mayo. A reception at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, hosted by Charles Sheehan, Irish Consulate of Chicago, concluded the day, and included even more delights, in the form of James Fraher’s photographic images of Ireland, and enchanting music by Melanie O’Reilly and Seán O Nualláin. -

From Celtic Twilight to Revolutionary Dawn The Irish Review 1911-1914 By Ed Mulhall The July 1913 edition of The Irish Review , a monthly magazine of Irish Literature, Art and Science, leads off with an article " Ireland, Germany and the Next War" written under the pseudonym " Shan Van Vocht ". The article is a response to a major piece written by Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes books and a noted writer on international issues, in the Fortnightly Review of February 1903 called "Great Britain and the Next War". Shan Van Vocht takes issue with a central conclusion of Doyle's piece that Ireland's interests are one with Great Britain if Germany were to be victorious in any conflict. Doyle writes: "I would venture to say one word here to my Irish fellow- countrymen of all political persuasions. If they imagine that they can stand politically or economically while Britain falls, they are woefully mistaken. The British Fleet is their one shield. If it be broken, Ireland will go down. They may well throw themselves heartily into the common defense, for no sword can transfix England without the point reaching Ireland behind her." However The Irish Review author proposes to show that "Ireland, far from sharing the calamities that must necessarily fall on Great Britain from defeat by a Great Power, might conceivably thereby emerge into a position of much prosperity." The contents page of the July 1913 issue of The Irish Review In supporting this provocative stance the author initially tackles two aspects of the accepted British view of Ireland's fate under these circumstances: that Ireland would remain tied with Britain under German rule or that she might be annexed by the victor. -

Arguably Andrew Thacker betrays a similar underlying assumption when he writes of ‘After the Race’: ‘Despite the characterisation of Doyle as a rather shallow enthusiast for motoring, the excitement of the car’s “rapid motion through space” is clearly associated by Joyce with a European modernity to which he, as a writer, aspired’ (Thacker 115). 2. Wirth-Nesher’s understanding of the city, here, is influenced by that of Georg Simmel, whereby the city, while divesting individuals of a sense of communal belonging, also affords them a degree of personal freedom that is impossible in a smaller community (Wirth-Nesher 163). Due to the lack of anonymity in Joyce’s Dublin, an indicator of its pre-urban or non-urban status, this personal freedom is unavailable to Joyce’s characters. ‘There are almost no strangers’ in Dubliners, she writes, with the exceptions of those in ‘An Encounter’ and ‘Araby’ (164). She then enumerates no less than seven strangers in the collection, arguing however that they are ‘invented through the transformation of the familiar into the strange’ (164). 3. Wirth-Nesher’s assumptions about Dublin’s status as a city are not really necessary to the focus of her analysis, which emphasizes the importance Joyce’s early work places on the ‘indeterminacy of the public and private’ and its effects on the social lives of the characters (166). That she chooses to frame this analysis in terms of Dublin’s ‘exacting the price of city life and in turn offering the constraints of a small town’ (173) reveals forcefully the pervasiveness of this type of reading of Joyce’s Dublin. -

Four additional letters written by MacDiarmid’s second wife, Valda Grieve, to Sorley MacLean have also been included as they shed further light on the relationship which evolved between the two poets over the course of almost fifty years of friendship. These letters from Valda were archived with the unpublished correspondence from MacDiarmid which the Gaelic poet preserved. The critical introduction to the letters examines the significance of these poets’ literary collaboration in relation to the Scottish Renaissance and the Gaelic Literary Revival in Scotland, both movements following Ezra Pound’s Modernist maxim, “Make it new.” The first chapter, “Forging a Friendship”, situates the development of the men’s relationship in iii terms of each writer’s literary career, MacDiarmid already having achieved fame through his early lyrics and with the 1926 publication of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle when they first met. -

Stephens here makes use of traditional motifs. for the purpose of creating a psychological study. These stories are no doubt an attempt at something quite distinct from what actually came to absorb his mind - Irish saga material. It may to my mind be regretted that he did not write more short stories of the same kind as the ones in Etched in Moonlight, the most poignant of which is "Hunger," a starvation story, the tragedy of which is intensified by the lucid, objective style. Unfortunately the scope of this article does not allow a treat ment of the rest of Stephens' work, which I hope to discuss in another essay. I have here dealt with some aspects of the two middle periods of his career, and tried to give significant glimpses of his life in Paris, and his .subsequent years in Dublin. In 1915 he left wartime Paris to return to a revolutionary Dub lin, and in 1925 he left an Ireland suffering from the after effects of the Civil War. -

YEAT’S PRESENCE IN JAMES JOYCE’S A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN Abstract In the context of scholarly re-evaluations of James Joyce’s relation to the literary revival in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, this essay examines the significance of W.B. Yeats to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It traces some of the debates around Celtic and Irish identity within the literary revival as a context for understanding the pre-occupations evident in Joyce’s novel, noting the significance of Yeats’s mysticism to the protagonist of Stephen Hero, and its persistence in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man later. The essay considers the theme of flight in relation to the poetry volume that is addressed directly in the novel, Yeats’s 1899 collection, The Wind Among the Reeds. In the process, the influence of Yeats’s thought and style is observed both in Stephen Dedalus’s forms of expression and in the means through which Joyce conveys them. Particular attention is drawn to the notion of enchantment in the novel, and its relation to the literature of the Irish Revival. The later part of the essay turns to the 1899 performance of Yeats’s play, The Countess Cathleen, at the Antient Concert Rooms in Dublin, and Joyce’s memory of the performance as represented through Stephen towards the end of the novel. -

Irish Working-Class Poetry 1900-1960 In 1936, writing in the Oxford Book of Modern Verse, W.B. Yeats felt the need to stake a claim for the distance of art from popular political concerns; poets’ loyalty was to their art and not to the common man: Occasionally at some evening party some young woman asked a poet what he thought of strikes, or declared that to paint pictures or write poetry at such a moment was to resemble the fiddler Nero [...] We poets continued to write verse and read it out at the ‘Cheshire Cheese’, convinced that to take part in such movements would be only less disgraceful than to write for the newspapers.1 Yeats was, of course, striking a controversial pose here. Despite his famously refusing to sign a public letter of support for Carl von Ossietzky on similar apolitical grounds, Yeats was a decidedly political poet, as his flirtation with the Blueshirt movement will attest.2 The political engagement mocked by Yeats is present in the Irish working-class writers who produced a range of poetry from the popular ballads of the socialist left, best embodied by James Connolly, to the urban bucolic that is Patrick Kavanagh’s late canal-bank poetry. Their work, whilst varied in scope and form, was engaged with the politics of its time. In it, the nature of the term working class itself is contested. This conflicted identity politics has been a long- standing feature of Irish poetry, with a whole range of writers seeking to appropriate the voice of ‘The Plain People of Ireland’ for their own political and artistic ends.3 1 W.B. -

It brings together writers and intellectuals from across Ireland and the United States – including James Joyce, George William Russell (Æ), Alice Milligan, Lewis Purcell, Lady Gregory, the Fugitive-Agrarian poets, W. B. Yeats, Harriet Monroe, Alice Corbin Henderson, and Ezra Pound – whose work registers the movement’s impact via imitation, homage, adaptation, appropriation, repudiation or some combination of these practices. Individual chapters read Irish and American writing from the period in the little magazines and literary journals where it first appeared, using these publications to give a material form to the larger, cross-national web of ideas and readers that linked distant regions. -

In a career of more than 50 years, she persistently questioned, and radically expanded, the parameters of Irish poetry and the definition of the Irish poet. The course will examine a wide range of Eavan Boland’s poetry and prose. Seminars are structured around some of the poet’s major themes and modes. These will also be interspersed with seminars that seek to place Boland within the broader history of modern Irish poetry, via comparisons with the work and careers of Blanaid Salkeld, Patrick Kavanagh, Derek Mahon, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and Paula Meehan. Also explored will be relevant historical and cultural contexts, and questions of poetics and ideology. Assessment The module is assessed through a 4,000-word essay. Indicative bibliography Students will need to purchase a copy of Eavan Boland, New Selected Poems (Carcanet/Norton) and Eavan Boland, Object Lessons: The Life of the Woman and the Poet in Our Time (Carcanet/Vintage/Norton) as the core course texts. Please note: it is expected that students will read Object Lessons in full before the start of the course. All other primary material needed through the term will be made available via Blackboard. This will include poems from Boland’s collections published since the appearance of New Collected Poems (Domestic Violence, A Woman Without A Country and The Historians) and the work of the other poets to be studied on the course, as well as various other relevant essays, articles and interviews. -

RW_HISTORY_BOOK1 06/07/2007 14:32 Page 41 CULTURAL REVIVAL A growing interest in sport and new means of transport (bicycle, buses) which allowed more people attend The low profile adopted by the IRB which was still powerful in the leadership From 1900 GAA provincial and national championship matches became very popular It acquired more sports grounds, e.g. Croke Park It linked in with the growing cultural nationalism which encouraged the Irish language and ‘buy Irish’ campaigns. The achievements of the GAA The GAA created and fostered two unique Irish games It encouraged local and national patriotism It encouraged administrative skills and an understanding of democracy which were valuable when the country gained independence. 9.2 The Gaelic League The decline of the Irish language The Irish language was the most obvious difference between the Irish and the English, but it had been declining since the 18th century. In 1851, 23% of the population spoke Irish, but this had fallen to 14% by 1891. The decline was due to: The low status of Irish. Most people who spoke it were poor and uneducated. Powerful figures like landlords, judges and politicians spoke English English was more useful for emigration, so parents wanted the schools to teach it to their children and not Irish Few Irish speakers could read or write Irish and there were no newspapers or books in modern Irish for them to study. A new interest in Irish A new interest in Irish appeared in the 1880s and 1890s because: Linguistic scholars from Europe came to study Irish, which is one of the oldest written European languages Collections of Irish poetry and folktales like Douglas Hyde’s Love Songs of Connaught were published.
