SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME + + + + + + + + + + + JULY 28, 2019 FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the fountain of Elijah in northern Israel in the 12 th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13 th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” They soon celebrated a special Mass and Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) in honor of Mary. In 1726, it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. There is a tradition that Mary appeared on July 16, 1251 to St. Simon Stock, the Master General of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and the calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the Gospel call to prayer and penance – a call that Mary models in a splendid way. The final apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes, France was on July 16, 1858. At the final apparition of Our Blessed Mother at Fatima Portugal, on October 13, 1917, Our Lady first appeared as she had in the previous apparitions but then she appeared to the three children as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. FLOS CARMELI (The Flower of Carmel). O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me that you are my Mother.
