2014 Cal Poly Football ...... Page 15 Game 5 Cal Poly 38, New Mexico State 35 (OT) October 4, 1997 Aggie Memorial Stadium, Las Cruces, NM Attn: 15,839 LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Alan Beilke kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime to lift Cal Poly to a 38-35 upset win over Division I-A New Mexico State for one of the program’s biggest wins since claiming the national title in 1980. The win marked the first against a I-A (now Football Bowl Subdivision) program since a 26-0 win over Fresno State in 1979 and equalled the best start in school history since 1990 at 5-0. Beilke’s kick easily cleared the uprights and came moments after New Mexico State’s Nick Cecava missed from 29 yards out on the Aggies’ first possession in overtime. The kick also was one of redemption for Beilke, who barely missed a 45-yarder at the end of regulation that would have won it for the Mustangs. Cal Poly opted to kick the winner on a third-and-two situation on the 17 as head coach Larry Welsh did not want to take a chance on a bad snap or a fumble. The Mustangs rushed for 290 yards on an impressive 60 carries as Craig Young rushed for 153 yards and Antonio Warren added 79 yards on 25 carries. New Mexico State’s Denvis Manns, the nation’s 10th-ranked rusher, had 137 yards on 25 carries as the Aggies passed just 14 times in the game for 275 yards. Alli Abrew completed 12 of 17 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns for Cal Poly. He also ran for one score as Cal Poly erased 17-7 and 28-21 deficits for the win.
