DAILY CURRENT AFFAIR QUIZ – 07.11.2018 TO 09.11.2018 NATIONAL Cabinet approves 100% strategic disinvestment of government equity in DCIL The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given in principle approval for strategic disinvestment of 100 percent government shares in Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) to consortium of four ports –Vishakhapatnam Port Trust, Paradeep Port Trust, Jawahar Lal Nehru Port Trust and Kandla Port Trust. Presently the government holds 73.44 percent shares in DCIL. Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL)is miniratna public sector unit (PSU) engaged in the business of dredging. It does dredging for Indian seaports exclusively. Disinvestment is aimed at reducing the financial burden on the government due to inefficient PSUs and to improve public finances.Literally, disinvestment means selling of assets. Here, in the case of PUSs, disinvestment means Government selling/ diluting its stake (share) in Public Sector Undertakings in which it has a majority holding. Disinvestment is carried out as a budgetary exercise, under which the government announces yearly targets for disinvestment for selected PSUs. Cabinet approves leasing out six airports through PPP Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved leasing out six airports(Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mengaluru, Thiruvanathapuram, and Guwahati airports ) of Airports Authority of India (AAI) for operation, management and development under Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the first phase. This will be done through Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC). The government's decision on privatising these airports comes 12 years after it privatised Delhi and Mumbai airports, which have emerged among the top airports globally. PPP in infrastructure projects brings efficiency in service delivery, enterprise, expertise and professionalism apart from harnessing needed investments in public sector. Tribal University in Andhra Pradesh Union Cabinet has approved setting up of Central Tribal University in Andhra Pradesh.It will be set up in Relli village of Vizianagaram District of Andhra Pradesh. It will be established under Thirteenth Schedule to Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 (No. 6 of 2014). Cabinet has also approved provision of funds of Rs. 420 crore for first phase expenditure towards establishment of Central Tribal University. 113 crore to six border states under Border Area Development Programme Union Home Ministry has released more than Rs. 113 crore to six border states under Border Area Development Programme (BADP) as part of its plan to ameliorate the problems of people living in isolated locations. These six states are Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.Till now, Home Ministry has released total of Rs. 637.98 crore during 2018-19 period to states having International Border. Earlier, in September 2018, the centre released Rs.399.24 crore for 10 states along the international borders under this programme.The amount released in 2017-18 was Rs. 1,100-crore. “Mahila-E-Haat” Women and Child Development Ministry launched an online marketing portal named: “Mahila-E-Haat” for promoting women farmers and entrepreneurs. It was launched during the 5th “Women of India National Organic Festival, 2018”. Women of India National Organic Festival, 2018 commenced from October 26 to November 4, 2018 and was held at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts at Janpath, New Delhi. Bihar approves funds worth Rs 25000 for graduate girls Bihar government approved a proposal to offer Rs 25,000 to every girl graduating in 2018 and onwards.The one-time payment will be offered to every girl who graduated from the colleges of Bihar on or after April 25, 2018, irrespective of pass division, community or region. Bihar Cabinet has allotted Rs 300 crore for disbursal of this payment to an estimated 1,20,000 girls about clear graduation course this year. This scheme is a part of a larger government scheme that aims to pay each girl Rs 54000 including payments made to her from birth to graduation. Nation‟s largest container port JNPT planned to host edible oil refinery Nation‟s largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai released it‟s plan to host an edible oil refinery. Additionally, the port would also invest Rs 310 crore for extending the liquid cargo tank farm which would incre-ase its capacity to 4.5 mtpa. Cabinet approves filling of Padur Strategic Petroleum Reserves in Karnataka The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the filling of Padur Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) in Karnataka by overseas National Oil Companies (NOCs). The filling of the SPR will be under PPP model. The UK India Business Council launched New Report – „Beyond the Top 200‟ UK India Business Council released its report named: „Beyond the Top 200-Effective International Collaboration for Indian Higher Education‟. As per the report by 2030 India will have the largest number of people in the world of college-going age – a staggering 140 million. Currently there are 736 universities in India educating 28.6 million students. India will need at least another 1,500 institutions by 2030 to accommodate this huge influx of students. Kerala govt scheme to provide free education to Ockhi-hit kids The Kerala government has commenced a scheme to offer free education and vocational training to the children of fishermen who died or went missing in the 2017 Ockhi cyclonic storm. The scheme provide a package of:- Rs 10,000 per year for children in classes from LKG to Class V, Rs 25,000 for children in classes 6 to 10, Rs 30,000 for higher secondary students and up to Rs 1,00,000 for students doing graduation. INTERNATIONAL UN World Food Programme, Alibaba Group form strategic partnership to eliminate hunger United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group have formed strategic partnership to support efforts eliminate hunger globally by 2030. The agreement was signed between WFP Executive Director David Beasley and Alibaba Partner and Chairman of Alibaba Foundation Sun Lijun at Alibaba‟s headquarters in Hangzhou, China. Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba will work with WFP to develop digital “World Hunger Map”. The map will help to monitor global hunger and operations to end scourge by 2030 which is one of UN‟s key Sustainable Development goals. Alibaba established the Alibaba Poverty Relief Program in December 2017, aiming to invest RMB10 billion in five years to alleviate poverty with focuses on education, rural commerce advancement, empowering women, healthcare and environmental sustainability. World Food Programme The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations and the world's largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security.It is a member of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG).It is headquartered in Rome (Italy). India pledged contribution of $13.36 mn for UN agencies, development activities 1st Secretary in India‟s Permanent Mission to the UN, Mahesh Kumar, on behalf of India pledged contributions of USD 13.36 million for the various UN agencies and development activities. This pledge was taken during the 2018 United Nations Pledging Conference for Development Activities at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. About 19 countries pledged a total of USD 425.69 million at the Pledging Conference, reflecting an increase from the 2017 amount of USD 398.98 million. Indian economy will expand 7.4 per cent in 2018, but the growth will slow down to 7.3 per cent in the next fiscal.
