Page 4 Section A — Wednesday, February 24, 2016— THE FRANKLIN PRESS Opinion Macon growth needs to leave room for farming Everyone wants growth. Personal growth, professional growth, the growth of our town, county and state consumes our lives. It’s natu- ral to think that the future has to be bigger and therefore better, so as a society we have to shape it to suit our needs. While growth is something that we should chase, we must not be too quick to let go of the things that have made Macon County great. Among those things is a large and vibrant agricultural community that continues to serve as one of the pillars on which our sense of place is built. Over the past several months, the Macon County planning board has charged head first into a revamp of the county’s comprehensive plan. The comp plan is updated every five to 10 years and serves as the roadmap for the future of the county. It identifies our county’s strengths and weaknesses and sets goals for addressing impending issues. During the planning board meeting last week the topic of land use was on the docket and the board cov- ered several important aspects of how we take advantage of the finite area we have. The discussion ultimately turned to agriculture, and the statistics provided showed an unsettling, albeit unsurprising, loss of farms and farm land in Macon County.
