Box 9192 Dar es Salaam Summary Over 1,164,000 ha of wetland areas are listed as suitable for irrigation, mainly for crop production and livestock grazing. Existing and planned irrigation schemes are described for the ,main river basins where large areas are devoted to rice and sugar cane. Emphasis' is placed on the value of small scale, farmer-managed irrigation schemes and the rehabilitation of traditional systems. Introduction All wetlands are potentially suitable for agriculture because of their available water and high soil fertility. Due to national priorities or requirements some wetlands are put to other uses, such as game reserves. The total wetland area identified as suitable for irrigation development is estimated to be over 1,164,600 ha (Table 1). Wetlands are swamps or low lying areas of land which are subject to inundation, usually seasonally. They have hydromorphic soils, transitional morphological characteristics between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and support hydrophytes and halophytes. Wetlands in Tanzania can be characterised under four main categories: 1. Deltaic processes of rivers which discharge into the Indian Ocean and are characterised by flat topography, low lying relief and heavy'clay soils. They are subject to sea water intrusion which contributes to the salinisation of the soils which, under predominantly mangrove vegetation, are potentially acid sulphate. -

The river of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles, closely followed by predators are a sight from another age: one of the most impressive in the world. DATES AND HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT 1929: Serengeti Game Reserve declared (228,600 ha) to preserve lions, previously seen as vermin; 1940: Declared a Protected Area; 1951: Serengeti National Park created, including Ngorongoro; boundaries were modified in 1959; 1981: Recognised as part of the Serengeti-Ngorongoro UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. LAND TENURE State, in Mara, Arusha and Shinyanga provinces. Administered by the Tanzanian National Parks Authority. AREA 1,476,300ha. It is contiguous in the southeast with Ngorongoro Conservation Area (809,440ha), in the southwest with Maswa Game Reserve (220,000ha), in the west with the Ikorongo-Grumeti Game Reserves (500,000ha), in the north with the Maasai-Mara National Reserve (151,000ha) in Kenya and in the northeast with the Loliondo Game Controlled Area (400,000ha). -

Abstract Poaching is one of the major problems in wildlife conservation and management in the Tarangire ecosystem. Unfortunately it is not easy to identify poaching hotspots because poaching activities are dynamic and concealed in nature, thus there are no standardized methods to quantify them. This study used zebra poaching data as an indicator to human exploitation. The aim of this study was to identify risk areas for zebra poaching within and around Tarangire National Park, a core area of the Tarangire ecosystem. -

Lower Mara River Environmental Flow Assessment POLICY BRIEF 2020-01 APRIL 2020 A SECTION OF THE LOWER MARA RIVER IN TANZANIA Determining the Reserve in the Lower Mara River Basin Final Resource Quality Objectives and Reserve Assessment Report KEY MESSAGES AND FINDINGS • The Mara River Basin is transboundary and of international importance, shared by Tanzania and Kenya and draining into Lake Victoria. It is home to nearly 1 million people dependent on modest water resources that also sustain Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, and biodiverse wetlands bordering Lake Victoria. Increasing water demands place both people and nature at risk. • Environmental flow allocations are an important management tool for ensuring that the water needs of ecosystems are protected alongside the needs of people. It is one of the three divisions that comprise Ngorongoro District in Arusha Region. NCA was established in 1959 by the NCA Ordinance No 413 of 1959 as a multiple land use area, designated to promote the conservation of natural resources, safeguard the interests of NCA indigenous residents and promote tourism. NCA is a unique protected area in the whole of Africa where conservation of natural resources is integrated with human development. The main features of the NCA include the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti Plains that support about 2.0 million migratory wildlife species of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem (TAWIRI, 2003) and the catchment forest; the Northern Highland Forest Reserve (NHFR) known as „Entim Olturot‟ in Maa language.
