1 Conversations with Professor Stroud Francis Charles (Toby) Milsom by Lesley Dingle1 and Daniel Bates2 Fourth Interview: Cambridge – Published Works Date: 11th December 2009 Between October and December 2009, Professor Milsom was interviewed four times at his home in Newnham to record his reminiscences of over sixty years of an illustrious academic career, the majority of which was spent in the Faculty of Law at Cambridge. The interviews were recorded, and the audio version is available on this website with this transcript of those recordings. The questions and topics are sequentially numbered in the three interviews for use in a database of citations made across the Eminent Scholars Archive to personalities mentioned therein. Professor Milsom this is our fourth interview and we’ve come to the point where we can discuss your published work. Everything I’ve learned from scholars who have reviewed your books indicates that you are, to quote Professor Ibbetson3, “The lawyer’s legal historian par excellence”. Today I hope we can talk in general terms about the background of the writing of your books and perhaps we can turn over some stones to reveal a few aspects hitherto not discussed in more scholarly fora. Your life’s work seems to me to read like a long journey in a carriage during which you constantly sought true meaning from situations for which most, maybe all of your fellow passengers, initially accepted the conventional Maitlandian view. -

The New Christian phenomenon, which began in 1492 with the expulsion of Jews from Spain, coincided with the beginning of this period and has long been identified as a catalyst in the modernization of Western culture. Occupying a unique place within European society, New Christians straddled pre-existing boundaries between religious and social groups; they were ideally placed to take advantage of the social, political, and economic shifts then taking place. The lives of some New Christians like Roderigo Lopez support the notion that, in certain cases, potential economic and political gain often outweighed the taboo of utilizing the services of Jews and those of Jewish descent. Miriamne Ara Krummel Jewish Culture and literature in England A Historical Context and Cultural Backdrop: Being Jewish in Christian England The story of how the medieval English Jews lived their lives in eleventh-, twelfth-, and thirteenth-century England intersects with the realities of the Jews' historical situation. Thinking about the contingent realities of Jewish lives brings us to the Christian community's view of Jews and the Jews' own view of themselves and how the Jews themselves navigated the fraught culture of medieval England. A powder keg, of sorts, resulted after the Normans claimed the seats of power in 1066. This combustible site that was medieval England in the eleventh century involved the English (that is, the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and other Germanic tribes) who had arrived in the fifth century; the Norman French who took control over the country in 1066; and the Jews who were imported into England by the Normans (Cohen 2006; 2004; Roth 1964). -

Hessayon, «Jews and crypto-Jews in sixteenth and seventeenth century England», Cromohs , 16 (2011): 1-26 < URL: http://www.cromohs.unifi.it/16_2011/hessayon_jews.html > Abstract There are many narratives, some old, some relatively recent, covering the presence of crypto-Jews and Jews in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I have tried, specifically with non-specialists and general readers in mind, to give an overview of that story here. Given this essay ’s origin as a public lecture commemorating the 350th anniversary of the tacit readmission of Jews to England in 1656, my account has a particular focus on developments during the English Revolution of 1641–60, though it is also positioned within a more ambitious grand narrative recounting the Jewish, crypto-Jewish and Jewish apostate experience in England from the Norman Conquest to the Restoration. While I have drawn on my own research – notably on Judaizing, readers familiar with the material will see that my text is also greatly indebted to a number of important scholars in the field of Anglo- Jewish history; something fully acknowledged in the endnotes. Indeed, there is another story to tell, namely how from the mid-nineteenth century scholars of Anglo-Jewry, desiring acceptance within British society and the legitimation of their distinctive history, collectively constructed a narrative of gradual social assimilation and communal unity. But that these histories were themselves written against a background of religious and racial prejudice, exclusion, marginalisation, tensions and conflict, as well as the disturbing continuity of antisemitic tropes, is itself revealing.
