By the 3rd September this had sold half a million copies, and by 27th November it became the first Beatles record to sell One Million copies in Britain alone. It also achieved the rare feat of two separate spells at number 1.

The most significant change is the printing of the composer names ... this release establishes "Lennon-McCartney" as the format of their composer credit for the rest of their Beatle career.

Not surprisingly therefore it entered the chart with a bullet, whilst "She Loves You" was enjoying it's second spell at number 1. The following week moving to number 1, with "She Loves You" now at number 2. At this time The Four Moptops were also at number 1 and 2 in the LP charts !

The sixth official EMI release. Another label change for EMI ... In January 1964 on all their labels they now included the words, "Sold in U.K. Subject to resale price conditions. See Price Lists" in the push-out centre. This, of course, means ALL original pressings of this single have it. What this also means is, any earlier releases which carry this declaration MUST also have been pressed AFTER January 1964.

Lead vocal John Lennon .9 / McCartney .1 US - Capitol LP HELP! The tenth official EMI release. No significant label changes, or versions of this disc at all, most originals should look as above. Although, there is a change to the labelling EMI used as from this disc. On 1st July 1965, EMI merged all its roster labels into one parent company, the "Gramophone Company Ltd.". Therefore from this single onwards, the small "rights of the manufacturer" statement around the outside edge of the label, began with the new company name instead of "The Parlophone Co. Ltd.". Yet again though, this changeover wasn't immediate, so look out for some copies with either statement printed ! ... and would you believe it, this situation applied right up to 1969 releases !

The Beatles - You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) – Past Masters

flip of Let It Be

Recorded: 17 May, 7/8 June 1967, 30 April 1969

Paul has named "You Know My Name" his favorite Beatles track due to its irregularity. The song was recorded over a two-year span, being worked on and shelved several times between 1967 and 1969. John came up with the lyric and title after seeing a postal advertisement reading, "You have their name? Look up their number." The karaoke segment was developed during the second sessions for the song, and a reference to 'A Hard Day's Night' associate producer Dennis O'Dell was added, prompting numerous calls to his home by crazed fans who chanted mindlessly "We have your name and now we've got your number", as well as drugged fans coming en masse to his doorstep wanting to live with him.

Recording dates May 17, 1967 (instrumentals) June 7, 1967 (instrumentals) June 8, 1967 (instrumentals, inc. Brian Jones sax solo) June 9, 1967 (mixed into one master take) April 30, 1969 (vocals and sound effects)

This was kept off the top spot by Sgt. Barry Sandler’s The Ballad Of The Green Berets and ’ classic 19th Nervous Breakdown.

The photo was nicked from the back of , and was re-used on Capitol’s The Early Beatles LP. The early pressings credit What Goes On to ‘John Lennon – Paul McCartney’, but should have read ‘Lennon-McCartney-Starr’. (Ringo waited four years to get a composer credit, and then got scrubbed off the label!) Later pressings corrected the mistake, but because there are relatively few of the correct ones around, they are actually worth more than the originals!
