Selection Criteria

Overview Guahan Napu Inc. (GNI), ’s non-profit association of surfers and body boarders, will be hosting tryouts and qualifying events in order to nominate a team to the Guam National Olympic Committee (GNOC) for the 2011 Pacific Games to be held in Noumea, New Caledonia from the 27th of August until the 10th of September 2011. The initial selection process for surfing will pool from all members of GNI and/or individuals who apply for the team. The final selection process will be made by a Selection Committee and the head coach; those individuals will then be nominated to the Guam National Olympic Committee for final review and selection. Athletes will be identified and/or selected by the Selection Committee and the head coach based on their previous outstanding performances and/or recognition at a.) local surf tournaments, and/or b.) development training camp or, c.) tryouts/qualifying events. Each applicant must fill out the required application forms provided to them by GNI and must meet the requirements set out by the surfing association and the GNOC. Each athlete is required to participate in the fundraising eforts to send Team Guam to the Games. The exact amount needed to fundraise will be announced by February 2011. Dates The final selection of nominated athletes will be made on February 25, 2011, to the Guam National Olympic Committee. The Guam National Olympic Committee will announce, via the Guam Pacific Daily News and the GNOC website, the final selection of the Guam National Team or Team Guam. Announcement Announcement for the 2011 Surfing National Team will be posted immediately to the GNOC Website and through outreach eforts with athletes in the national network as well as through the GNI’s email broadcast and website. Eligibility • The athlete must be in good standing with GNI and the GNOC. • The athlete must meet the Residency requirements/guidelines as set forth by the GNOC.

*The Residency requirements/guidelines will be handed out to each athlete at their initial tryout/qualifying event. • Show continued improvement to surfing from May 2010 to May 2011. Areas included:  Surfing specific movements: to be able to perform basic surf movements with control, style and consistency – Movements such as: • Bottom-turn, forehand/backhand re-entries, round-house cut backs, floaters, tube-riding.  Surfers must have a willingness to change personal style to be more skill driven.  Surfers need to have knowledge of wave conditions and be able to perform movements in diferent conditions.  Flexibility – static stretching (warm up, general stretching, specific stretching, cool down).  Balance is also required.  Cycling for leg strength.  for cardio vascular upper body strength, aerobic endurance.  Skateboarding for balance.  Running/Sprinting for cardio and leg strength.  Fitness ball training for core strength and balance – crunches, stretching, etc.  Video analysis – video individual surfers; then evaluate their surfing afterwards and correct and encourage their surfing ability. Once they see themselves surf they become aware of their flaws and it makes them visualize thus making it easier to improve. Mental knowledge to understand the pressure of competing and how to choose a correct wave and what maneuvers can be performed is also needed in the fitness and training sections. • It is important to be able to train at diferent locations/venues to get diferent waves, wind and weather feel. The nominated athlete(s) will be expected to be able to travel to these locations/venues. • Athletes will also need to:  Show consistent levels to manage pressure in competition situations towards coaches, other surfers, ofcials and spectators.  Demonstrate willingness to cooperate with GNI coach(es) and manager(s) and maintain a positive attitude towards the sport of Surfing.

Additional requirements for nomination • Hand in forms at the correct time to ensure deadlines are met; • Sign and abide by GNI Code of Conduct and any other applicable forms required by the GNI, GNOC, Pacific Games Council (PGC), and the Pacific Games Organizing Committee (PGOC); • Submit himself/herself without reservations to all doping control policies of the GNI, GNOC, PGC, PGOC, and the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA); • Undergo Team Guam medical test; • Commit to maintaining a coach-mandated training program from the time of nomination until the end of the specified international competition; • Maintain contact with the National Team Coach and keep them informed about your training progress; • Exhibit good sportsmanship and character, on and of the playing/practice field of play. • Attend all mandated training camps or practices, unless other arrangements are made; • Shall perform/participate in fundraising activities for the Guam National Team (GNOC) and the GNI; • Be a member of GNI; • Shall pay an initial application fee of $50.00

NOTE: Of-island athletes must make it to tryouts for the team and are required to be back on island by summer vacation to try out for the team and must provide proof that he/she is actively competing in the sport while abroad in the form of a coach/trainer certification letter, event placement, competition and training schedules, etc. **This does not guarantee the athlete nomination to the team but will be given an opportunity to train with the team to see if there is cohesion amongst the athletes.

Tryouts and Qualifying Events Participation in competitions and training is compulsory unless a legitimate excuse is given by the athlete. Training will be done by athlete and overseen by the coach at the coaches’ discretion. 2010 Events: 20 November - "Surf The Basin II" • Men’s Surfing and long-boarding; grommets surfing; body-boarding contest at Hagatna Boat Basin. *If conditions are dangerous or non-existent, alternate date for this event will be 04 December. 3 of 6 2011 PACIFIC GAMES – NEW CALEDONIA – GUAHAN NAPU, INC. 11.02.10

2011 Events: 22 January - "Rick's Reef Classic IV" • Men Surfing and long-boarding; grommets surfing; body-boarding contest at Rick's Reef, Satpon Point. *If conditions are dangerous or non-existent, alternate date for this event will be 24 February.

Top 10 point scorers (eligible/qualified) from men’s surfing and top five point scorers (eligible/qualified) from long-boarding from the above two contests will move forward to Pacific Games Qualifiers 1 and II.

12 March – Pacific Games Qualifier I • The 15 surfing and long-board surfers who competed in the previous two contests will compete for points at Rick's Reef, Satpon Point. Points scored at this qualifier round will be carried over to the next qualifying round. *If conditions are dangerous or non-existent, alternate date for this event will be 26 March. 7 May – Pacific Games Qualifier II • Final elimination/selection for New Caledonia 2011 Pacific Games. All 15 competitors will compete in one (1) final round and points scored at this 2nd qualifier event will be added to the points carried over from the 1st qualifier. Upon completion of this qualifier, the competitors’ names and rankings will be forwarded (nominated) to GNOC for selection. *If conditions are dangerous or non-existent, alternate date for this event will be 21 May.

Training Athletes are required to attend 3 times weekly land workouts and surf minimum of 3 times weekly as conditions allow. Training journals will be kept by coach and athlete and will be submitted for review for final selection. Monday Work Out: Paseo track • 5 minutes yoga stretch/ breathing exercise • 15 minutes calisthenics - pushups, sit ups, flutter kicks, duck walks, jumping jacks. • 1 mile run 4 laps around track • 5X 50 yard sprints

• 1 mile warm down • 10 minutes stretch Wednesday Work Out: Hagatna Pool • 5 minutes stretch/breathing exercise • 500 meter warm up • 10 minutes calisthenics • 10X 25 meter sprints(500 meters) • 500 meter warm down • 5 minutes stretch Friday Work Out: Boat Basin surf side • 5 minutes stretch • 15 minutes calisthenics • 15 minutes paddle with board • 5X 25 meter sprints with board • 50 duck dive drills • 5 minutes stretch

Selection Procedure Selection for nominated athlete will be based on the surfer who shows consistent top ranking, enthusiasm and improvements in all trials/training/competitions. Attendance of no less than 80% to training is required. The final selection of nominated athletes will be made on February 25, 2011, to the GNOC. The GNOC will announce via the Guam Pacific Daily News and the GNOC website. If an athlete refuses the nomination he/she will forfeit their application fee. If a nominee accepts the nomination and is selected to the Guam National Team by the GNOC and then later withdraws, the athlete will forfeit their application fee and may be subject to fines and/or sanctions (i.e., not able to try out for the team for one quadrennial, which could jeopardize the athletes ability to take part in the: Olympic Games, East Asian Games, Mini Pacific Games, Pacific Games and the Micronesian Games).

** Conflict of Interest: If an athlete being considered for nomination has a conflict of interest with an individual(s) in the selection committee, the individual(s) in the selection committee shall recuse him/ herself from any discussion and decision regarding the athlete’s nomination. **

Due Process Any athlete who is displeased with his/her ranking, placement, or decision on nomination will first meet with GNI Team Coach and/or Board. If the athlete is still displeased he/she has the right to send a grievance to the Guam National Athletes Commission (GNAC). The athlete may contact the GNOC at 647-4662 for assistance in contacting the proper GNAC members or send an email to [email protected], and the grievance will be forwarded to the proper person(s).

Qualifying Standards Surfing athletes must have the following knowledge, skills or abilities to accomplish the following tasks:

 Surfing specific movements: to be able to perform basic surf movements with control, style and consistency –  Minimum Movements such as: bottom-turn, forehand/back hand re- entries, round-house cut-backs, floaters, tube-riding.  Surfers must have a willingness to change personal style to be more skill driven.  Surfers need to have knowledge of wave conditions and be able to perform movements in diferent conditions.  Ability to tread water for 1 minute.  Ability to swim 50 meters freestyle.  Ability to complete 3-minute survival float.  Ability to swim 200 meters open water, any stroke. 6 of 6
