June 15, 2012 The Abaconian Section A Page 1 VOLUME 20 NUMBER 12 JUNE 15th, 2012 Eleven perish in boating tragedy By Timothy Roberts Eleven people, including two chil- dren, perished when a boat heading to Florida developed engine trouble and sank in the area of Hawksbill Cays (just north of Fox Town) sometime close to 9pm on Sunday, June 10. Local police and rescue agencies were not alerted about the sinking until late in the afternoon on Monday as no one had reported it until a young man (a survivor that swam to shore) walked into the police station in Marsh Harbour around 3pm that day. It was reported by the survivor – a nineteen year-old male – that possibly as many as six other people swam to shore but they quickly disappeared into the night. According to Noel Curry, Abaco’s Officer in Charge, the young man attempt- ed to help a young lady swim to shore but she was swept away by a wave. He then fo- cused on getting himself to safety. He told police he swam from 9 pm Sunday evening until 3 am Monday morning. • Bahamas 2018 Ports of Entry (REVISED)
Bahamas 2018 Ports of Entry (REVISED) In Spring 2018, Bahamas Customs announced a new list of official ports of entry where you can clear customs, immigration and buy a cruising permit. Our experience is that the official list on the Bahamas Customs website is inaccurate in some places. At some ports listed, customs may not clear general boaters, except under extraordinary circumstances. Conversely, some marinas where customs regularly clears are not included on the website list. In March 2018, Waterway Guide conducted a national survey to find out which ports of entry were actual places to clear in. The list below reflects the results of that survey and serves as our unofficial guide. We have included newly assigned phone numbers. Customs headquarters has reaffirmed that transport fees should not normally be charged and, if so, a receipt must be given. We have learned, however, that when customs has to travel long distances to clear a vessel, voluntary tipping is an accepted practice. Our general advice is to always call a marina or customs well in advance. This list updates pages 44-45 in Waterway Guide’s 2018 Bahamas Edition. PRESS RELEASE One In A Millionaire Couple to get secluded nuptials in Bahamas luxury 16 Weddings, 16 Islands, One Priceless Day FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, March 24, 2014 – A lucky couple will be treated like royalty early in the new year after winning a dream wedding in the Berry Islands, The Bahamas, which is touted as a haven for champagne wishes and caviar dreams. The couple will be among a total of 16 couples who will be named winners of The Islands Of The Bahamas’ 16 Islands Wedding Invitation. The major promotional initiative launched February 14, invites couples throughout the continental United States to enter to win one of 16 dream weddings. Each wedding will take place on a different island of The Bahamas on January 16, 2015 at 16:00. The Berry Islands, one of the couples’ Bahamas destinations, are commonly referred to as having more millionaires per square mile than most places on Earth. One large Bahamas real estate company boasts of the Hollywood royalty that have been lured to the islands over the years. “It’s said that Cary Grant danced the night away in the clubhouse of Great Harbour Cay (Berry Islands) and Brigitte Bardot loved the beaches,” according to ColdwellBankerBahamas.com. Located 150 miles east of Miami, the Berries are a chain of islands and cays that cover about 30 square miles. The total landmass is just over 12 square miles, and the Berry Islands have approximately 700 residents. The population increases seasonally as travellers visit from all over the world and high net worth individuals and families retreat to the Berries as a winter haven.
