The poem was a success notwithstanding, and perhaps in part due to, the controversy surrounding the work. March's subsequent projects were more mainstream. The poem tells the story of show people Queenie and her lover Burrs, who live in a decadent style that March depicts as unique to Hollywood. They decide to have one of their parties, complete with illegal bathtub gin and the couple's colorful, eccentric and egocentric friends, but the party unfolds with more tumultuous goings-on than planned. Some love is fire: some love is rust: But the fiercest, cleanest love is lust. And their lust was tremendous. It had the feel Of hammers clanging; and stone; and steel: And torches of the savage, roaring kind That rip through iron, and strike men blind: Of long trains crashing through caverns under Grey trembling streets, like angry thunder: Of engines throbbing; and hoarse steam spouting; And feet tramping; and great crowds shouting. A lust so Wild Party: The Lost Classic, they could have wrenched The flesh from bone, and not have blenched. A new hardcover edition was released in with the subtitle The Lost Classic. It featured about fifty black-and-white illustrations by Art Spiegelmana long-time admirer of the poem. In his introduction to the volume, Spiegelman recalls his first meeting with writer William Burroughs. He indicates that the conversation was stilted until Spiegelman asked if the elderly Burroughs had ever encountered March's poem. It's the book that made me want to be a writer. The Wild Party : The Lost Classic by Joseph Moncure Art Spiegelman Graphic Novel | eBay Published Wild Party: The Lost Classicthis racy prose poem follows a night in the life of a vaudeville dancer that includes everything from hot sex to cold murder. Joseph Moncure March. Stylishness and brutishness are in perfect accord. The inventive and varied Wild Party: The Lost Classic designs offer perfect counterpoint to the staccato tempo of this hard-boiled jazz-age tragedy told in syncopated rhyming couplets. Here is a poem that can make even readers with no time for poetry stop dead in Wild Party: The Lost Classic tracks. Once read, large shards of this story of one night of debauchery will become permanently lodged in the brain. When The Wild Party was first published, Louis Untermeyer declared: "It is repulsive and fascinating, vicious and vivacious, uncompromising, unashamed. It is an amazing tour de force. • The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa
Pan 1 Margaret Pan Prof. Anne Fleche Introduction to Drama 21L.005 Play Review: The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa The stage is awash in a soft red glow, seductive and sinister. The sheer backdrop, haphazardly adorned in empty picture frames, just barely shrouds the silhouettes of the backstage musicians. Picasso-esque paint splatters mark every surface, from the stage floor to the set’s monolithic furniture pieces. The lights begin to dim, and then all is silent but the orchestra’s quiet shuffling. It’s opening weekend for the MIT Music Theatre Guild’s production of The Wild Party, a provocative musical by Andrew Lippa based on an eponymous 1928 poem by Joseph Moncure March. The Music Theatre Guild (MTG), which formed in 1981, boasts itself as the “oldest and largest theatre organization at MIT,” and they certainly did not disappoint. The production was seamless, from the costuming, to the props, to the lighting and the music and beyond. Over the course of two and a half hours, the MTG cast takes the audience on a transformative journey of seduction, suffering, and scandal. The play’s opening number introduces its protagonists—Queenie, a beautiful and feisty young woman seeking a lover to satisfy her lust, and Burrs, a clown by profession but a womanizer by habit. In true musical fashion, the two enter the act separately with their own verses and introductions, and as the song progresses, their voices—and their fictional lives—intertwine in a beautiful harmony. Fast forward three years—as their love grows stale and passion gives way to abuse, Queenie plots to win back her lover and Pan 2 rekindle her relationship once and for all by throwing the grand party.

  • A Video Conversation with Pulitzer Prize Recipient Art Spiegelman
Inspicio the last laugh Introduction to Art Spiegelman. 1:53 min. Photo & montage by Raymond El- man. Music: My Grey Heaven, from Normalology (1996), by Phillip Johnston, Jedible Music (BMI) A Video Conversation with Pulitzer Prize Recipient Art Spiegelman By Elman + Skye From the Steven Barclay Agency: rt Spiegelman (b. 1948) has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the A literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus— which por- trayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controver- sial content. He believes that in our post-literate culture the im- portance of the comic is on the rise, for “comics echo the way the brain works. People think in iconographic images, not in holograms, and people think in bursts of language, not in para- graphs.” Having rejected his parents’ aspirations for him to become a dentist, Art Spiegelman studied cartooning in high school and began drawing professionally at age 16. He went on to study art and philosophy at Harpur College before becoming part of the underground comix subculture of the 60s and 70s. As creative consultant for Topps Bubble Gum Co. from 1965-1987, Spie- gelman created Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids and other novelty items, and taught history and aesthetics of comics at the School for Visual Arts in New York from 1979-1986.

LaChiusa, Michael John (b. 1962) by Greg Varner Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2005, glbtq, inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com In 2004, Michael John LaChiusa was described in an article in The Washington Post as "the most prolific composer in New York during the past 10 or so years." He does not object to the characterization. "I do write a lot," he says. "I enjoy it." Along with Ricky Ian Gordon and a handful of other composers, LaChiusa has been identified as an heir to Stephen Sondheim's brilliant legacy in the American musical theater. LaChiusa frequently creates works that demand intellectual involvement on the part of the auidence; and, like Sondheim's, his works for the musical theater are often described as "operatic." LaChiusa was born July 24, 1962, in Stockwell, New York, where he first began writing songs at the urging of his fourth-grade teacher. While still in his teens, LaChiusa made his way to New York City with the ambition to compose for the theater. He came to early notice in 1993 with First Lady Suite, a look at the hidden lives of presidential wives Jackie Kennedy, Mamie Eisenhower, and Eleanor Roosevelt, whose lesbian lover, Lorena Hickock, figures prominently in the piece. (A revival production of 2002 was recorded for a CD released in 2003.) In 1994, LaChiusa solidified his reputation as a brilliant young composer with Hello Again, a musical suggested by Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde and produced at Lincoln Center with a first-rate cast including John Cameron Mitchell, Donna Murphy, Judy Blazer, and Michele Pawk.

  • Spiegelman Studies Part 2 of 2: Breakdowns, No Towers and the Rest of the Canon
Literature Compass 12/10 (2015): 509–516, 10.1111/lic3.12263 Spiegelman Studies Part 2 of 2: Breakdowns, No Towers and the Rest of the Canon Philip Smith* Loughborough University Abstract Art Spiegelman is one of the most-discussed creators in Comic Book Studies. His Pulitzer-winning work Maus (1980 and 1991) was, alongside The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and Watchmen (1987), the catalyst to a sea change in the commercial and critical fortunes of the alternative comic book during the mid-1980s. It has been a landmark text in critical discourse on comics ever since. The purpose of this and its companion paper is to offer a synthesis and reinvestigation of both the existing critical literature on Spiegelman as well as, perhaps most importantly, the lacunae within that literature. The aims of these two papers, then, are two-fold: firstly, to establish where we have got to and, secondly, to suggest some directions for the fu- ture of Spiegelman scholarship. The first paper concerned Maus. This, the second of the two, is devoted to In The Shadow of No Towers (2004), Breakdowns (1977 and 2008), and Spiegelman’s other works. Spiegelman’s Maus is, inarguably, one of the most important comics in the history of the medium and has accordingly, as we saw in Part 1 of this survey, attracted a great deal of critical attention. His subsequent works In the Shadow of No Towers (2004) and the reissue of his first collection Breakdowns (originally 1977, reissued in 2008) have generated considerable further interest. Breakdowns is Spiegelman’s first collection of comics.
