I think, being a chemical engineer who is involved in modelling does give me a unique advantage, as people fi nd the mix of talents interesting. People often tell me that I inspire them as they can see, it is possible to mix varied interests successfully, even if they are pursuing interests that are as diff erent as academics and modelling — something more glamorous. There are challenges, too, when you pursue modelling with a full time job, especially in Qatar and the Middle East as this is a relatively young fi eld in this part of the world. The requirements are a little diff erent, too. A major challenge I face revolves around the shooting/ fi lming time and hours, as they confl ict with my time at work; the fi nancial remuneration is comparatively low here as well. As I see it, this is because the shooting of most of the commercials and advertisements here, are controlled by modelling agencies which are looking to work with a minimum budget; their timings and schedules are not fl exible either. On the other hand, international agencies are a lot more fl exible and accommodating, in working around your schedule and they compensate well too, based on the number of hours you put in.

Tell us about your foray into acting. I have acted in some short fi lms and video advertisements that have been featured on Qatar TV, YouTube channels and some local Qatar-based movies. I’ve played roles in various commercial advertisements and short video clips like the ones released for important events such as National Day, Sport Day, Ramadan as well as commercial videos for organisations like QNB, Supreme Council of Health (Seha), QIC Qatar Insurance Company and Kahramaa. But he was cast in Malick’s 2005 historical fi lm The New World. Now he’s in the latest Malick fi lm, Knight of Cups, a contemporary story in which Bale plays a Hollywood screenwriter named Rick who has all the trappings of success — work, money, houses, cars, access. Yet it has left him at a crossroad, full of unfulfi lled needs and a desire to fi nd a new way forward. Malick shot Knight of Cups without a conventional script. Rather, the fi lm emulates glimpses of memory more than straightforward storytelling, pulling the viewer along through Rick’s spiritual and emotional crisis. It’s of a piece with Malick’s more recent fi lms — The Tree of Life and To the Wonder — in its movement away from traditional narrative in favour of a more impressionistic style. Not surprisingly it requires actors to fl ex new muscles. A few days after the recent Academy Awards ceremony — Bale was nominated for supporting actor for his role in The Big Short — the actor sat in Beverly Hills and talked about the unique Malick moviemaking experience.
