2 Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to IFC's 9th annual Sustainability Exchange, the focus of which is Navigang Market Cycles: Shi ing Gears, Strengthening Fundamentals, Sharing Benefits. This is a unique opportunity for us to bring togetherIFC 's clients and partners to share best pracces in performance management, community investment, local sourcing, public private partnerships, revenue management, water stewardship, communicaons and stakeholder engagement at a crical me.

A er a decade of fast emerging market growth powered by a commodity super-cycle, we now find economic development at a crical crossroads. We all need to take stock of the implicaons of slower growth, lower commodity prices and high expectaons from stakeholders in emerging markets. At the same me, many developing countries urgently need infrastructure upgrades to meet rising demand for energy and fresh water. We esmate that emerging markets will need an addional $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion of investment in infrastructure every year, and also expect there to be growing need for mining and other extracves projects – many of which will be in remote areas where development needs are greatest.

It's more important than ever to ensure businesses, governments, communies and civil society work together to pursue sustainable growth and shared benefits from infrastructure and natural resource sectors. Strong partnerships, transparency, and trust will be vital to striking this balance. We must strive to be creave and find new ways to leverage much-needed private sector investment to build infrastructure and create jobs.

This year, we are hosng more than 200 praconers from companies, consultancies, civil society, governments, internaonal development agencies, academia and the Group to discuss economic, environmental and social aspects of infrastructure and natural resource work. We hope you will use this opportunity to network and jointly explore how to drive good performance by embedding sustainability into core business funcons.
