CHRISTMAS CAROLS Although any Christmas song might be called a ‘carol’ these days, the word actually refers to an ancient English song-form where a refrain or chorus repeated after every stanza (or verse) and is often connected to celebrations like Christmas or Easter. The word carol is derived from the Old French word carole, a circle dance accompanied by singers (in turn derived from the Latin choraula). Carol’s origins are complex and disputed. Some of our familiar Christmas carols were originally pagan songs, sung at the Winter Solstice celebrations They were very popular as dance songs from the 1150s to the 1350s, after which their use expanded as processional songs sung during festivals, while others were written to accompany religious mystery plays. Whatever the origin, composers all over Europe started writing carols but most people could not understand them since they were written and sung in Latin. This changed in the early 13th century when St. Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas songs in church services in Italy for the first time — and true Christmas carols were officially born. In Assisi’s Nativity plays, which began in 1223, actors sang songs that described the scenes in the plays. Although the choruses were sometimes in Latin, the songs were usually written in the language that people could understand. The actors composed Christmas carols to sing during their Nativity plays and, later, they would walk through the streets still singing. It didn’t take long for these plays to spread to France, Spain and the rest of Europe. The tradition of singing Christmas songs in native languages became well established. -

Braiding Rhythms: The Role of Bell Patterns in West African and Afro-Caribbean Music A Smithsonian Folkways Lesson Designed by: Jonathan Saxon* Antelope Valley College Summary: These lessons aim to demonstrate polyrhythmic elements found throughout West African and Afro-Caribbean music. Students will listen to music from Ghana, Nigeria, Cuba, and Puerto Rico to learn how this polyrhythmic tradition followed Africans to the Caribbean as a result of the transatlantic slave trade. Students will learn the rumba clave pattern, cascara pattern, and a 6/8 bell pattern. All rhythms will be accompanied by a two-step dance pattern. Suggested Grade Levels: 9–12, college/university courses Countries: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Ghana, Nigeria Regions: West Africa, the Caribbean Culture Groups: Yoruba of Nigeria, Ga of Ghana, Afro-Caribbean Genre: West African, Afro-Caribbean Instruments: Designed for classes with no access to instruments, but sticks, mambo bells, and shakers can be added Language: English Co-Curricular Areas: U.S. history, African-American history, history of Latin American and the Caribbean (also suited for non-music majors) Prerequisites: None. CHRISTMAS SONGS ENJ-9481 2 Heart warming Christmas Songs – the title is not quite as original as the music behind it. In comparison to Diana Krall’s CD Jenny Evans offers more unexpected tones. Her repertoire coincides with her Canadian colleague in two numbers („The Christmas Song“, „Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas“) but apart from that the English woman who lives in Munich gives her Christmas album a definite European touch. Most noticably in her choice of material: she’s searched through Eruopean folk tunes and as well as English has also discovered German, Austrian and Czech songs that have never been rendered in a jazzy way. Some go backe to the 16th century (e.g. „The Coventry Carol“) for Jenny Evans, who started her career with piano lessons with the Baroque specialist Trevor Pinnock, then sang with the Henrich Schütz Choir and the Munich Motettenchor an ideal area to merge her love of Early Music with jazz by no means stretches the bow too far. She gives a a latin groove to “Blessed Be That Maid Mary” with its Latin and English lyrics, her own lyrics and an Akro-Cuban rhythm to a Czech Christmas lullaby and the Austrian “Still, still, still“ a world music touch with drone and yodelling. When she does go turn to the American repertoire whtn it is with a medley of two popular standards (“Little Drummer Boy / Nature Boy”) that have never been heard together. With her dulcet voice this vocalist can warm your heart and that is the main thing at this season. -
Advent/Christmas
Theme: Advent/Christmas Objective To experience the Christmas story through song and movement Overview In this event, families gather to focus on the birth of Jesus through the singing and acting out of traditional Christmas songs. Groups of families will be assigned a Christmas song, prepare the presentation of the song using props, drama, etc., and lead the large group in song while acting it out. The event will close with singing of Happy Birthday to Jesus, and sharing of cake and refreshments. EVENT PLAN Prior to Family Faith Event 1. Invite all families with kindergarteners to register. 2. Choose a location that has a large enough meeting space for your group, with space for small groups to plan their part of the evening festivities, and a stage area for the song dramatizations. 3. Decorate the gathering space for Christmas, including a Christmas tree, crèche, and other symbols of the season. 4. Gather dress-up or costume options, materials for make-shift props, and art supplies for the families to use in presenting their songs. Remember, this is not a Hollywood production; kindergarteners are very creative and they love to play dress-up. Try not to give in to the temptation to provide “ready-made” costumes and props. Part of the fun of this event is in the planning and creating that the family groups will do together to present their songs. 5. Create a workshop area in the event space for costume creation, art, and props. 6. Make song booklets that contain the lyrics for the Christmas songs you have chosen. -

In this paper we examine grounding semantic representations in raw auditory data, using standard evaluations for multi-modal semantics. After having shown the quality of such auditorily grounded repre- sentations, we show how they can be applied to tasks where auditory perception is relevant, including two unsupervised categorization experiments, and provide further analysis. We find that features transfered from deep neural networks outperform bag of audio words approaches. To our knowledge, this is the first work to construct multi-modal models from a combination of textual information and auditory information extracted from deep neural networks, and the first work to evaluate the performance of tri-modal (textual, visual and auditory) semantic models. 1. Introduction Distributional models (Turney & Pantel, 2010; Clark, 2015) have proved useful for a variety of core artificial intelligence tasks that revolve around natural language understanding. The fact that such models represent the meaning of a word as a distribution over other words, however, implies that they suffer from the grounding problem (Harnad, 1990); i.e. they do not account for the fact that human semantic knowledge is grounded in the perceptual system (Louwerse, 2008). -

Advent, Christmas & Epiphany 2020 An Annotated List of Worship Resources With all that 2020 brings, how much we need to hear anew the promises of God through the words of the prophets, to experience again the star’s light illuminating the night, and to know more fully the presence of Emmanuel, God-with-us! The following resources invite us all into reflection, repentance, renewal and celebration through the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany seasons. As you plan worship this season, I challenge you to: à Think beyond the walls of the church building. Our neighbors long for hope, peace, joy and love too. Our communities need to know Jesus. Think of ways you can celebrate Advent and Christmas on the front lawn of the church, at the community park, in the town square, and in people’s living rooms. Go where people are, and take the good news of Jesus Christ with you! à Think beyond spoken words. We are all drowning in words right now – news headlines, talking heads, stump speeches and social media posts. The Advent and Christmas narratives overflow with imagery. In Jesus, God’s Word takes on flesh; he lives and moves and acts. Consider the ways that visual images, instrumental music and meaningful action may draw us deeper into the mystery of God dwelling among us. Incorporate these into your worship alongside the traditional spoken and sung liturgy. I have collected an extensive list of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany liturgical resources below. PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA Cabasa - A rattle consisting of a small gourd covered with a loose network of strung beads. It is held by a handle and shaken with a rotating motion. Claves - A pair of hardwood cylinders, each approximately 20 cm. long. One cylinder rests against the fingernails of a loosely formed fist (cupped to act as a resonator) and is struck with the other cylinder. Cowbell - A metal bell, usually with straight sides and a slightly expanding, nearly rectangular cross section. A type without a clapper and played with a drumstick is most often used in orchestras. Castanets - Consists of two shell-shaped pieces of wood, the hollow sides of which are clapped together. They produce an indefinite pitch and are widely used in Spanish music especially to accompany dance. When used in an orchestra, they are often mounted on either side of a piece of wood that is held by the player and shaken. Sleigh bells - Small pellet bells mounted in rows on a piece of wood with a protruding handle. Tambourine - A shallow, single-headed frame drum with a wooden frame in which metal disks or jingles are set. It is most often held in one hand and struck with the other. Bongos - A permanently attached pair of small, single-headed, cylindrical or conical drums. One drum is of slightly larger diameter and is tuned about a fifth below the smaller. The pair is held between the knees and struck with the hands. Maracas - A Latin American rattle consisting of a round or oval-shaped vessel filled with seeds or similar material and held by a handle. -
