Arthur Honegger’e ve onun viyola sonatına odaklanılmış bu çalışmanın ilk bölümünde Honegger’in hayatı, eserleri, stili ve estetik anlayışı üzerinde durulmuştur. İkinci bölümde, Honegger’in hayatı ve Fransa müzik yaşamında önemli rol oynamış Fransız Altıları (Les Six) grubu incelenmiş, grubun doğuşu, grup üyeleri arasındaki ilişki, grup üyelerinin ortaklaşa besteledikleri eserler ve özellikle Arthur Honegger’in grup içindeki yeri ele alınmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Arthur Honegger, Fransız Altıları, viyola, sonat. iv ABSTRACT Name and Surname : Uğraş TORUN University : Bursa Uludag University Institution : Social Science Institution Field : Music Branch : Stringed Instruments Degree Awarded : Sufficiency of Art Page Number : X + 61 Degree Date : .12.2019 Supervisor : Prof. Görkem ÇALGAN THE PLACE OF ARTHUR HONEGGER IN LES SIX AND THE VIOLA-PIANO SONATE IN A MINORE Arthur Honegger, who is from Switzerland, but spent a significant part of his life in France, has composed more than 200 works in a wide variety of genres like symphony, concerto, oratorio, film music etc. and has become one of the most influential composers of his era with his original composing understanding. In the first part of this work which focuses on Arthur Honegger and his Viola Sonata, Honegger's life, works, style and aesthetics were examined. In the second part, the group Les Six, which played an important role in life of Honegger and music of France, was examined and the birth of the group, the relationship between the group members, the works written together by the members of the group, and especially the place of Arthur Honegger in the group were discussed. The third and final part of the work is devoted to the composer's Viola Sonata. In this part the three movement work was examined in detail after referring to the writing process of the work. With this study, it was aimed to introduce the music of Arthur Honegger, which has not been played and researched enough until now in Turkey, while at the same time it was aimed to examine the Viola Sonata, which has not been analyzed in detail in sources in and out of Turkey. Key Words: Arthur Honegger, Les Six, viola, sonata v ÖN SÖZ 20. yüzyılın önemli Fransız bestecilerinden olan Arthur Honegger, yaşadığı hayat sürecince birçok önemli eser bestelemiştir. An Analysis of Honegger’s Cello Concerto (1929): A Return to Simplicity? Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2014, 58 pp., 3 tables, 28 examples, 33 references, 15 titles. Literature available on Honegger’s Cello Concerto suggests this concerto is often considered as a composition that resonates with Les Six traditions. While reflecting currents of Les Six, the Cello Concerto also features departures from Erik Satie’s and Jean Cocteau’s ideal for French composers to return to simplicity. Both characteristics of and departures from Les Six examined in this concerto include metric organization, thematic and rhythmic development, melodic wedge shapes, contrapuntal techniques, simplicity in orchestration, diatonicism, the use of humor, jazz influences, and other unique performance techniques. • Ricardo Viñes's Pianistic Legacy: an Evaluation of His Articles
Ricardo Viñes’s Pianistic Legacy: An Evaluation of his Articles, Recordings, Compositions, and Pedagogy by David Potvin A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by David Potvin 2020 Ricardo Viñes’s Pianistic Legacy: An Evaluation of his Articles, Recordings, Compositions, and Pedagogy David Potvin Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2020 Abstract Ricardo Viñes (1875-1943) was a Catalan pianist who spent most of his career based in Paris. He premiered many of the major piano works by Debussy, Ravel, and other French, Spanish and Latin American composers of the early twentieth century. He had a reputation among his peers as a pianist who possessed an extraordinary technique, who was selflessly committed to the integrity of his musical performances, and who sacrificed further career success to promote the music of lesser-known composers. His legacy is that of a contemporary music specialist. Literature on Viñes is based mostly on his diary, which he kept between 1885 and about 1914, testimony by his students, press reviews and homages by his peers. The English literature on Viñes is lacking a study of his published articles, compositions and recordings, and has not convincingly challenged Elaine Brody’s assertion that Viñes was essentially a self-taught pianist. This dissertation examines that material and finds that Viñes’s articles indicate his preference for romantic musical ideals, his compositions belie his purported technical prowess, his recordings ii reveal some technical limitations, and his training and teaching methods are rooted in the French piano school tradition.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kingston University Research Repository 1 Erik Satie’s musique d’ameublement and Max Jacob’s Ruffian toujours, truand jamais* Caroline Potter Musique d’ameublement Satie’s concept of musique d’ameublement (furniture music) ensures he is viewed as a precursor of minimalism, muzak, and many other 20th-century musical genres. The concept of music which is experienced as a backdrop to everyday activities rather than as the sole focus of a listener’s attention is something with which Satie was familiar in his role as a Montmartre café pianist in the late 19th and early 20th century: he had first-hand experience performing popular tunes of the day as a background to eating, drinking, and conversation. Music as mechanism, music as a backdrop to other activity reach an apogee in Satie’s furniture music. This article will explore the concept and context of Satie’s furniture music focusing on his collaboration with Max Jacob, Ruffian toujours, truand jamais (1920), a play which is examined here for the first time. The play, which received a single performance on 8 March 1920 and then disappeared from public view, featured furniture music entr’actes by Satie which link directly to the staging. Music is also central to the play, as two of the characters play instruments as part of the stage action. While Satie’s furniture music has been studied extensively by authors from Roger Shattuck to contemporaries including Steven * I wish to acknowledge British Academy funding of my research visit to Paris and Normandy which enabled this article to be written.

  • French Performance Practices in the Piano Works of Maurice Ravel
Studies in Pianistic Sonority, Nuance and Expression: French Performance Practices in the Piano Works of Maurice Ravel Iwan Llewelyn-Jones Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy School of Music Cardiff University 2016 Abstract This thesis traces the development of Maurice Ravel’s pianism in relation to sonority, nuance and expression by addressing four main areas of research that have remained largely unexplored within Ravel scholarship: the origins of Ravel’s pianism and influences to which he was exposed during his formative training; his exploration of innovative pianistic techniques with particular reference to thumb deployment; his activities as performer and teacher, and role in defining a performance tradition for his piano works; his place in the French pianistic canon. Identifying the main research questions addressed in this study, an Introduction outlines the dissertation content, explains the criteria and objectives for the performance component (Public Recital) and concludes with a literature review. Chapter 1 explores the pianistic techniques Ravel acquired during his formative training, and considers how his study of specific works from the nineteenth-century piano repertory shaped and influenced his compositional style and pianism. Chapter 2 discusses Ravel’s implementation of his idiosyncratic ‘strangler’ thumbs as articulators of melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and textural material in selected piano works. Ravel’s role in defining a performance tradition for his piano works as disseminated to succeeding generations of pianists is addressed in Chapter 3, while Chapters 4 and 5 evaluate Ravel’s impact upon twentieth-century French pianism through considering how leading French piano pedagogues and performers responded to his trailblazing piano techniques.

This thesis seeks to rectify this situation by presenting a study of the activities and reception of the musiciennes of interwar France. The thesis is divided into three parts: part one provides a contextual framework within which to situate the pursuits of women musicians by considering both their contemporary social position and the gender- specific conditions which affect the lives, careers, and reception of musiciennes. Part two focuses on conductors and composers. Jane Evrard and her Orchestre feminin de Paris are discussed within the context of the contemporaneous development of the all woman orchestra and rise of the first professional female conductors.
