The ship was remarkable in that it was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. It was constructed with funding from United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the prettiest merchant ship ever built. This china embodies both the mission of using nuclear power for peace while incorporating the design inclinations of the ship.

  • From Earth to Art: Customer Addenda
From Earth to Art: Customer Addenda The World Wide Web has revolutionized the research process. What was once a slow search through printed material can now be done in seconds electronically. Most of the material found in researching this book was done the traditional way, but since the introduction of the Internet a great deal more in- formation continues to surface. The original list of Maddock and Scammell customers was formed using traditional methods, rang- ing from printed materials to searches for china at antique shows, yard sales and thrift shops. In recent years, eBay has become the principal source of information about additional customers of the Lamber- ton Works. A weekly eBay search under Pottery and Glass for “hotel china,” “Scammell china,” “Trenton China,” as well as a search under all categories of just “Scammell” or “Maddock” will often result in a new offering to add to the customer list. eBay can be even more useful in identifying all of the mystery logos that have already been found. Monograms, coats-of arms, Native Americans, famous people, scenes and names in unusual lettering styles can ofter be linked to their owners by searches ranging from “hotel matchbook,” “hotel enve- lope,” or “hotel advertisement” to such things as “hotel key tag” or “hotel soap.” Using “club,” “yacht club,” “restaurant”or other words results in an even broader range of possible Lamberton Works cus- tomer identification. This addenda lists additional Lamberton Works customers that continue to be identified since the book was completed, as well as any new information about Maddock Pottery, Scammell China or the Lamberton works that is discovered.

Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West’s larger- than-life stadium shows with ease. In today’s DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. He and partner Nick Catchdubs founded America’s most trendsetting new label, Fool’s Gold, launching the careers of artists such as Kid Sister and Kid Cudi. Fool’s Gold’s mission to merge all aspects of club music was already outlined in Trizzy’s original mixtape manifesto, Dirty South Dance, which set the tone for his own production. He is now one of the most sought-after remixers in electronic music, and his remixes for the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Boys Noize have become undeniable mainstays in DJ sets the world over. 2009 saw the release of two critically acclaimed DJ mixes, Infinity +1 and Fabriclive 45, as well as the birth of Duck Sauce, his collaboration with Armand Van Helden. The duo’s radio smash “aNYway” cemented itself as the dance anthem of the year, A-Trak’s first true chart- topper with two videos in international rotation and across-the-board support from Pete Tong to Busy P, David Guetta to 2manydjs. Duck Sauce’s 2010 follow up “Barbra Streisand” was even bigger, a whistling pop sensation that accumulated over 60 million YouTube views of its star-studded video while hitting platinum heights around the globe. They even covered it on X-Factor and Glee! Not bad for a kid whom many viewed as a 90’s turntablism prodigy.

RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY NEW BRUNSWICK AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHN F. TINSLEY FOR THE RUTGERS ORAL HISTORY ARCHIVES WORLD WAR II * KOREAN WAR * VIETNAM WAR * COLD WAR INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY SANDRA STEWART HOLYOAK NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY MAY 9, 2008 TRANSCRIPT BY DOMINGO DUARTE Sandra Stewart Holyoak: This begins an interview with Mr. John F. Tinsley on May 9, 2008, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with Sandra Stewart Holyoak. Thank you, Mr. Tinsley, for coming to see us today. I know you are on a long trek, from Florida to Virginia to Pennsylvania and, now, here. You are heading to Long Island to celebrate your ninety-first birthday; congratulations. Could you tell me when and where you were born? John F. Tinsley: In Elizabeth, New Jersey, Elizabeth General Hospital, on May 17, 1917. SH: To begin, let us talk a little bit about your father and his background. What was his name? JT: Well, my father was one of three boys. My grandfather came over from [Ireland]. He started in Belfast, Ireland, and came over here and settled in a place called Hampton, New Jersey. Eventually, he worked in the iron mines in a town called Asbury, which is just down the road a bit, and he worked there for I don't know how many years, but he raised a family there. My father was born there on September 26, 1875, and he was the second son and, … prior to that, he … also had an older sister who was born and he had a younger brother, John, who was the one who went to Rutgers, the man after whom I was named.

CHAPTER 4 Clarke’s eight-month-old s.s. New Northland arriving at Palm Beach on January 10, 1927, to begin the first program of weekly cruises ever offered from Florida A NEW SHIP, SOUTHERN CRUISING AND NORTHERN ICE The "Northland" The order for a "steamer of special specification, strengthened for navigation in ice" mentioned by "The Gazette" in 1925 was placed with shipbuilders Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd of Newcastle upon Tyne, where, on January 30, 1926, the 3,445-ton Northland was launched at their Neptune yard. Walter Lambert, who had superintended the rebuilding of the North Shore after her fire in 1921, would play a role in the design and construction of several Clarke ships over the years. Meanwhile, "Fairplay" magazine carried news of the launching ceremony in its February 4 edition: - A luxuriously-fitted passenger and cargo vessel, ordered for the Clarke Steamship Company Ltd of Quebec by Tatham Bromage & Company Ltd, London, the well-known pulp and paper chartering agents, was launched on Friday afternoon, by Messrs Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, & Mrs Larkin, wife of the Hon Peter Larkin, High Commissioner for Canada, performing the naming ceremony. Mr Larkin and Miss Larkin, Dr Lemieux, Agent General for Quebec, and the Hon Victor Gordon, High Commissioner for Newfoundland, were also present.
