    Dreamboats, Boybands and the Perils of Showbiz: Pop and Film, 1956-1968 David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. The first appearance of rock and roll music in film seems to have been something of an afterthought. When Richard Brooks’s Blackboard Jungle was released in 1955, the producers made a last-minute decision to accompany the opening and closing credits with an obscure B-side called ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley and the Comets. The record had been released the previous year with little success. Although an instrumental version of the tune does appear in the middle of the film, Blackboard Jungle is barely concerned with rock or pop music at all. In one notable scene, the delinquent teenagers trash their teacher’s treasured collection of jazz records; while in another, one of the students, Gregory Miller (played by Sidney Poitier) performs a gospel song with his black class-mates. However, the inclusion of Haley’s track made it an immediate chart hit; and it also contributed to the remarkable success of the film with teenage audiences. Indeed, the use of ‘Rock Around the Clock’ seems to have encouraged dancing and even wilder behaviour in cinemas, both in the US and in the UK. When the film was shown in South London in 1956, Teddy Boys in the audience reportedly rioted and slashed the seats; and this led to similar behaviour in cinemas around the country.

    The placement of pop songs in film as promotion: The PRINCE of Egypt—a mini-case study Dean Diehl Skinner School of Business and Technology Trevecca Nazarene University ABSTRACT From humble origins as a masking sound for the clicking and clacking of early film projectors to epic masterpieces by masterful artists such as John Williams and James Horner, the use of music in film has evolved over time. This paper briefly examines the impact of the consolidation of entertainment companies into massive media giants covering film, television, video games and record labels on the use of music in film. As these media conglomerates seek to create synergy between their various divisions there is an ever-increasing potential for the aesthetic use of music in the creation of an aural atmosphere within which film makers tell their story to be compromised by the intentional introduction of songs for the purpose of increasing exposure and licensing income for priority artists. The paper includes an examination of the use of pop music in the marketing of the DreamWorks film PRINCE of Egyptas an illustrating case based on the author’s personal experience as the General Manager of a record label involved in the process.     The Wonder Years: Nostalgia, Memory and Pastness in Television Credits Kathleen Williams Abstract: Opening sequences on television have developed a complex and multifaceted relationship to pastness and memory—particularly in relation to nostalgia. Series such as Transparent (2014–) use the space of the credits to blur our understanding of memory and fiction. Others such as Californication (2007–2014) include fake home videos or Polaroids to lend authenticity to the constructed family memories they depict. In this article, I explore the nostalgic qualities of contemporary television credits and opening sequences. Title sequences occupy a unique temporal position: while they are repeated before each episode and therefore are familiar to repeat viewers, they also typically depict events outside of the temporal realm of the television episode they open. The relationship between retro filters and aesthetics and the playful nostalgic framing of pastness through title sequences provides a framework to play with notions of temporality in television. This article contributes to the limited literature on credits by conceptualising title sequences in relation to the evocation and representation of memory and materiality. The American television series The Wonder Years (1988–1993) opened with fake home video of the main characters each week. The footage was updated as the actors aged along with their characters. The excerpts presented all the aesthetic and rhetorical markers of home video: graininess, hand-held movement, the subjects waving to the camera, and a black frame. The credits served to make the story of the Arnold family a familiar one; the action depicted in the credits was sufficiently generic to belong to any family and, in particular, any American family.

    Tufts University Game of Titles: A Theoretical Approach for Title Sequences in the Age of Complex TV Amanda Rose FMS 94-08: Television in the Age of Change Professor Tasha Oren December 19, 2017 Introduction The television title sequence is the raised curtain before the show, the dimming of the lights before the film, the tuning of the instruments before the concert begins. We clap on cue to the theme song of Friends; we scroll through the map of Westeros before Game of Thrones; we settle into the neo-noir aesthetic of Marvel’s Jessica Jones. The title sequence is the prelude for the audience, a transition from the real world into the logistic, aesthetic, and tonal world of the text. Many television scholars grant title sequences a status as a distinct form, contextualizing them within a plethora of concepts and specific lenses. Jonathan Gray places title sequences in the context of Genette’s ideas on paratexts; Monika Bednarek surveys 50 different title sequences and integrates social semiotics into her analysis; Annette Davidson studies audience viewing behaviors for title sequences; Stacey Abbott takes a genre-specific approach for the openings of horror shows; and Cory Barker and John Ellis explore network and cable’s relationship with title cards and narration time. These scholars pull from studies on the opening sequences of films, sociological concepts, audience behavior studies, and marketing strategies. Yet, for all the theoretical attention paid to the title sequence, no scholar has yet to integrate these multiple angles of analysis into one comprehensive title sequence theory. The purpose of this paper is to propose such a theory: an inclusive and universally-applicable taxonomy of the television title sequence.

SMITH B.S., Kansas State University, 2003 M.A., Kansas State University, 2005 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Geography College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2016 Abstract Hollywood Westerns have informed popular images of the American West for well over a century. This study of cultural, cinematic, regional, and historical geography examines place imagery in the Western. Echoing Blake’s (1995) examination of the novels of Zane Grey, the research questions analyze one hundred major Westerns to identify (1) the spatial settings (where the plot of the Western transpires), (2) the temporal settings (what date[s] in history the Western takes place), and (3) the filming locations. The results of these three questions illuminate significant place images of the West and the geography of the Western. I selected a filmography of one hundred major Westerns based upon twenty different Western film credentials. My content analysis involved multiple viewings of each Western and cross-referencing film content like narrative titles, American Indian homelands, fort names, and tombstone dates with scholarly and popular publications. The Western spatially favors Apachería, the Borderlands and Mexico, and the High Plains rather than the Pacific Northwest. Also, California serves more as a destination than a spatial setting. Temporally, the heart of the Western beats during the 1870s and 1880s, but it also lives well into the twentieth century. The five major filming location clusters are the Los Angeles / Hollywood area and its studio backlots, Old Tucson Studios and southeastern Arizona, the Alabama Hills in California, Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona, and the Santa Fe region in New Mexico.

ABBISS ii ABSTRACT This project analyses six period drama productions in British television of the 2010s, expanding Claire Monk’s term of ‘post-heritage’ into a critical framework. Its case studies establish a cycle of progressive representations of the past in recent television drama, which operate against the assumptions of ‘heritage’ nostalgia forwarded by earlier scholars. The post-heritage framework consists of five guiding elements: interrogation, subversion, subjectivity, self-consciousness and ambiguity. These inform the analysis of the project’s case studies, while also allowing the existence of post-heritage elements to be recognised in earlier period drama productions. The thesis is split into three distinct parts, which allow the heritage and post-heritage elements of the case studies to be associated with the characteristics and theoretical concepts of television drama. The first chapter of each part evaluates the institutional context of its case study, identifying its impact upon production through textual examples from the programme. The second chapter of each part focuses on close analysis, demonstrating the extent to which post- heritage elements can assist innovation in television drama. Part I focuses on televisual style, identifying the naturalist, realist and modernist aesthetics of television drama. Scholarly sources are used to connect these with periods of British television history.

In a previous book chapter I presented analyses of examples of the latter, arguing that the sequences form an efficient part of the brand image for both the show and commissioning channel. In order to explore the extent to which such sequences are watched or skipped by viewers, and how such decisions are made I organised a series of preliminary focus groups in February 2012 with participants who identified themselves as regular view- ers of television serials, the findings of which are presented here. Two forms of stimuli were used: a main title sequence and an end credit sequence from a serial where different music is selected for this sequence for each episode. Analysis of the discussions indicates that the decision to view these sequences is dependent on a variety of factors. While for some the titles are required viewing, the participants in the groups are more likely to persistently view an end credit sequence where the music changes with the episode than an unchanging main title sequence.

ABSTRACT Conditions of Time and Space: A Re-enactment Experiment with the British TV Series Doctor Who Andrew Philip Ireland The aim of this thesis is to provide a contribution to knowledge in two areas. Firstly, it seeks to further our understanding of the historical conditions of British television drama production; in particular the constraining and liberating influences of production space on the role of the director, and their decision-making process to bring script to screen. Secondly, the work develops the concept of re-enactment as a practice-based augmentation for archive-based textual reconstruction. As such, the thesis offers deeper discussions on the human context missing from current historiographic approaches to broadcast research. The thesis develops a re-enactment methodology that, via practical realisation, allows researchers to gain insight into the production dynamics of a particular era in history to learn about ‘in the moment’ directing decision-making. This is applied to a practice- based experiment that includes creating a simulation of 1960s production conditions in order to explore the following research question: how would the decision-making process of producing contemporary television drama be affected by the conditions of 1960s production space? I argue that contemporary location-based production is as constraining as the studio it purports to rise above, yet without the same possibilities for creative reaction to counteract the limitations that historical conditions allowed.
