SVEEP Activity Calendar SVEEP Rohtas Overview - India, the largest democracy, has the legal age of 18 years and above for casting vote for assembly and parliamentary elections. Election Commission of India (ECI) has been consistently putting indomitable effort to cover the entire citizenry of India which is eligible for registration in the electoral roll and aims to make them participate in the voting process. To a greater extent, these efforts have produced results but a lot of efforts still needs to be done in this direction. Pressing issues like lesser understanding of importance of electoral process, lesser presence of women, working men, youth at polling stations, accessibility of vulnerable sections of the society to polling booths and intimidated voters still pose challenges for the system. To address all such issues, Election Commission of India has unfolded the strategy of SVEEP. SVEEP stands for Systematic Voters’ Education for Electoral Participation, a process of concerted interventions to add people in electoral process by sensitization and facilitation and ascertains increased participation of eligible age group people across all the sections, gender, caste, creed, religion of society. When electoral situation described in this report is seen, it is clear that certain polling booths have shown dismal turnout and poor participation of women and youth voters. In such context, the significance of SVEEP becomes relevant. SVEEP focuses on targeted approach to bridge the gaps of enrolment turnout at Polling booths, urban apathy and to wipe out the fear and favor factors by spreading awareness and confidence building measures. Other than ensuring free and fair polling in the district, SVEEP will focus on few areas to get the impressive outputs in terms of high level of awareness and huge turnout at polling stations. Child Rights, Child Care, Education and Protection: 1. Child Rights, Care and Protection: We live in present. It is only ‘Present’ who makes future bright and past-memorable. ‘Stacia Tauscher‟ says - “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.” We strongly advocate our thinking that if we want a Nation to be Educated, Healthy, Prosperous and Peaceful ,we need care and protect a child from all types of Exploitation and leave free in a child friendly environment. Juvenile Justice ( Care and Protection of Children)Act is a best weapon to create a child friendly environment –who will open the door of Suraj and Gram Swaraj. So,we do advocacy and awareness among social influencers, Policy Makers and executive Officers along with Juvenile Justice system. 2. Work Oriented Education to Rural Girls: Since inception of the organization this activity is in continuous run. Our stand on education is very clear. We want equal and quality of education for all. DAMAGE SCENARIO UNDER HYPOTHETICAL RECURRENCE OF 1934 EARTHQUAKE INTENSITIES IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS IN BIHAR Authored by: Dr. Anand S. Arya, FNA, FNAE Professor Emeritus, Deptt. of Earthquake Engg., I.I.T. Roorkee Former National Seismic Advisor, MHA, New Delhi Padmashree awarded by the President, 2002 Member BSDMA, Bihar Assisted by: Barun Kant Mishra PS to Member BSDMA, Bihar i Vice Chairman Bihar State Disaster Management Authority Government of Bihar FOREWORD Earthquake is a natural hazard that can neither be prevented nor predicted. It is generated by the process going on inside the earth, resulting in the movement of tectonic plates. It has been seen that wherever earthquake occurs, it occurs again and again. It is quite probable that an earthquake having the intensity similar to 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake may replicate again. Given the extent of urbanization and the pattern of development in the last several decades, the repeat of 1934 in future will be catastrophic in view of the increased population and the vulnerable assets. Prof A.S.Arya, member, BSDMA has carried out a detailed analysis keeping in view the possible damage scenario under a hypothetical event, having intensity similar to 1934 earthquake. Census of India 2011 has been used for the population and housing data, while the revised seismic zoning map of India is the basis for the maximum possible earthquake intensity in various blocks of Bihar. Probable loss of human lives, probable number of housing, which will need reconstruction, or retrofitting has been computed for various districts and the blocks within the districts. The following grim picture of losses has emerged for the state of Bihar.
