CD-ROM of this document plus images obtained to date - 1 - - 2 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Fish River Water Supply Scheme [FRWS] is a medium size but important water supply with the headwaters in the Central Highlands of NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range and to the south of Oberon. It supplies water in an area from Oberon, north to Portland, Mount Piper Power Station and beyond, and east, across the Great Dividing Range, to Wallerawang town, Wallerawang Power Station, Lithgow and the Upper Blue Mountains. It is the source of water for many small to medium communities, including Rydal, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo, as well as many rural properties through which its pipelines pass. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1945 as a Trading Undertaking of the NSW State Government. The FRWS had its origins as a result of the chronic water supply problems of the towns of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Oberon from as early as 1937, which were exacerbated by the 1940-43 drought. -

News from the Serious Recognition of the Australian Alps’ Worth Is Coming in Thick and Fast
#37 2008 news from the Serious recognition of the Australian Alps’ worth is coming in thick and fast. Most of us who live and work in and around the Alps have appreci- ated this landscape’s priceless value for many years, but 2008 will be remembered as the year that this iconic Australian landscape was given not just one, but two significant pats on the back. And in the big picture, these two ‘pats’ are more like two good whacks because they both carry serious clout. ALPS GETS NATIONAL HERITAGE LISTING The first came in June when the Alps region was declared one of Australia’s iconic destinations under the banner of the National Landscapes conservation/tourism initiative. The Australian Alps joins other iconic landscapes such as Kakadu and the Red Centre as a destination to appeal to international experience seekers. And being part of the initiative has brought with it all the resources on offer – especially support for the Alps as it works to develop its own strategic tourism plan as part of the initiative. And then came the second lot of big news. In early November the Federal Minister for the Environ- ment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett, announced National Heritage Listing* for the Australian Alps National Parks, an area of over 1.6 million hectares spanning Victoria, NSW and the ACT. Said Peter Garrett, “the listing of the Australian Alps National Parks recognises the outstanding natural, Indigenous and historic values of this iconic landscape.” Peter Jacobs, Convenor of the Australian Alps Liaison Committee explains. “The National Heritage Listing gives the Alps national significance. -

Five major areas were used to describe the family distributions: Eurasia, North America, South America, Africa including Madagascar, and Australasia including New Guinea, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. In order to investigate the possible correspondence with continental breakup, the tree with its terminal distributions was fitted to the geological area cladogram «Eurasia, North America), (Africa, (South America, Australasia») and to alternative area cladograms using the TreeFitter program. -

Morphological variations in these forms, and in the closely allied Egernia strialata (Peters), are tabulated. Egernia saxatilis saxatilis appears to be confined to the Warrumbungle Mountains, while Egernia saxatilis intermedia is distributed throughout various parts of the eastern highlands. -

Before the meeting, join Club members at 6.00pm for dinner (BYO) at the Vietnam Restaurant, O'Connor (the one on the corner). T shirts and badges carrying the Club's emblem, the corroboree frog, are available for purchase at Club meetings from the Social Secretary. PRESIDENTS PRATRE While not bread and circuses, the last month has been walks and conservation - issues which are the basic sustenance of this Club. On Wednesday 23 May, in addition to telephone and letters, 25 people rolled up at the Vidlers' house for what can only be described as a successful walk planning meeting. -

Controversies Over the Name of Mount Kosciuszko
Controversies over the name of Mount Kosciuszko Andrzej Kozek 2020-03-26 The story we are going to tell is about visibility of the highest peak of the continental Australia, Mt Kosciuszko (2228 m), from all directions around because this is the key to understanding where all the troubles with naming of the mountain came from. The tourism industry is another factor. Tourism Industry in Australia became an important component of Australian economy. In the year to June 2019, there were over 8.5 million international visitors in Australia, an increase of 3% from 2018. Tourism contributed 8.0% of Australia's total export earnings in 2010-11. Australian Alps with the highest Australian continental peak, Mt Kosciuszko belong to the icons attracting tourists [1,2]. Often over 1000 tourists visit Mt Kosciuszko on summer weekend days. Clearly the walk from Thredbo is the most popular one. Chair lifting over 560 m to level 1930 m [3], then a comfortable walk 5 km over elevated steel mesh way to Rawson Pass (2124 m) with ecological toilets brings you to the final 1.5 km on a maintained road to the top of Australia. The metal walkways have been built in the 1980’s. What a cute description of the walk has been found on the internet. Climbing Mount Kosciuszko is worth doing. It is pleasant. It is easy. It is hugely enjoyable. And, when you have done it, you can bask in the glory that once you stood on the highest point between the Andes and the East African Plateau.
