Séquin CS Division, University of California, Berkeley E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Key concepts and geometrical constraints are discussed that allow the construction of a usable bridge that is topological equivalent to a Möbius band. A multi-year search in publications and on the internet for real-world bridges that meet these requirements has not identified a single clean construction that warrants the designation “Möbius bridge,” but a few promising designs can be found. Several simple but practical designs are presented here. 1. Introduction July 2017 marks the twentieth installment of the annual Bridges conference [1], which elucidates the connections between mathematics and art, music, architecture, and many other cultural venues. This year the conference has been held in Waterloo, Canada. In its twenty-year history it has visited many places around the globe, including Seoul in South Korea, Coimbra in Portugal, Pécz in Hungary, and Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, the hometown of M.C. Escher. This conference series got started by Reza Sarhangi [2] at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. After a few occurrences at this initial location, Reza Sarhangi and other core members of this conference started discussing the possibility of establishing some kind of a commemorative entity of the conference on the Winfield campus. Since Escher, Möbius, and Klein are among the heroes of this Math-Art community, suggestions included an Escher Garden, a Möbius Bridge, or a Klein Bottle House. This prompted me to study the feasibility of such entities; and over the following year, I developed some practical designs for bridges and buildings that follow the geometry of a Möbius band [3].

This is not the first time the Mathematical Communities column has featured the Bridges Organization: the 2005 conference1, in the breathtaking Canadian Rocky Mountains at Banff, was described in these pages by Doris Schattschneider [Schattschneider, 2006], a regular Bridges participant and Escher-specialist. The 2005 conference saw the debut of Delicious Rivers, Ellen Maddow’s play on the life of Robert Ammann, a postal worker who discovered a number of aperiodic tilings.2 Marjorie Senechal, The Mathematical Intelligencer’s current editor-in-chief, served as Maddow's consultant.3 A theatre premiér at a conference on mathematics? A production performed by mathematicians, moonlighting as actors? But this is Bridges. A quick look at the 2005 conference relays the “essence” of this scientific and artistic “happening” resembling a first-rate festival of the arts. True to its title, Renaissance Banff, the 2005 Bridges gave all members of its community, whether based in the sciences or the arts, the feeling that they had helped bring about a genuine rebirth. I use “community” in its most complete sense—including adults, children, artists, university professors, art lovers and local people—for the wealth of conference activities could only be accomplished through the participation of each and every individual present.

    Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tsung-Hsin Lee, M.A. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee Hannah Kosstrin, Advisor Harmony Bench Danielle Fosler-Lussier Morgan Liu Copyrighted by Tsung-Hsin Lee 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation “Taiwanese Eyes on the Modern: Cold War Dance Diplomacy and American Modern Dances in Taiwan, 1950–1980” examines the transnational history of American modern dance between the United States and Taiwan during the Cold War era. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the Carmen De Lavallade-Alvin Ailey, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Martha Graham, and Alwin Nikolais dance companies toured to Taiwan under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. At the same time, Chinese American choreographers Al Chungliang Huang and Yen Lu Wong also visited Taiwan, teaching and presenting American modern dance. These visits served as diplomatic gestures between the members of the so-called Free World led by the U.S. Taiwanese audiences perceived American dance modernity through mixed interpretations under the Cold War rhetoric of freedom that the U.S. sold and disseminated through dance diplomacy. I explore the heterogeneous shaping forces from multiple engaging individuals and institutions that assemble this diplomatic history of dance, resulting in outcomes influencing dance histories of the U.S. and Taiwan for different ends. I argue that Taiwanese audiences interpreted American dance modernity as a means of embodiment to advocate for freedom and social change.

This meeting sparked a lifelong correspondence which would inuence the work of both men. In the talk, we will see examples of Escher’s work in the plane and on the sphere and discuss why the possibilities in these geometries are nite. We’ll look at how a diagram in an article by Coxeter opened up a new world of possibili- ties for Escher. Finally, we’ll give an indication about what it was in Escher’s work that Coxeter found mathematically fascinating. Escher before Coxeter Figure is a self-portrait by Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. It is a lithograph made in , when he was . Escher is well known for his intricate and beautiful designs that play with the ideas of geometry and perspective. Escher was born on th June in Leeuwarden, Holland, the youngest of ve brothers. The family moved to Arnhem when he was ve, and that is where he was brought up and educated. His father was a civil engineer, and all his older brothers became scientists. In he was admitted to the School for Architecture and Deco- rative Arts in Haarlem; this was where he produced his rst woodcuts. He had intended to study architecture but soon switched to graphic arts. He joked that it was only by a hair’s breadth that he escaped becoming a useful member of society.

Séquin For the last decade, the international Bridges conference has showcased mathematical connections in art, ar- chitecture, music, and many other cultural domains. It regularly attracts a few hundred participants—artists, mathematicians, computer scientists, teachers, etc.—from dozens of coun- tries. The formal, refereed part of the conference entailed ten plenary pre- sentations, forty regular papers, six- ty-one short papers, and seventeen “hands-on” workshops. There was also a curated art exhibition, a festi- val of short mathematical movies, a session of mathematical poetry, and an informal theatre event performed by conference participants. For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] The Sun in Her Eyes: Writing in English by Singapore Women Abstract Singapore writing in English goes back a mere forty-five years, and the work of the women writers is of even more recent provenance.1 From the forties to the mid-sixties, anglophone literary works were mostly by male authors as far fewer women than men in Singapore had formal education (let alone an education in English, the language of government and of professional advancement and when during the colonial and immediately post-colonial days primary education was not universal even for males). Furthermore, it was tertiary education which played a crucial, enabling role in literary production for it was not till after the post-war establishment of the University of Malaya in Singapore in 1948 and the appearance of undergraduate magazines that local literary work began to be published in earnest.
