Legune Coastal Floodplain
Legune coastal floodplain Location and Description Located between the mouths of the Victoria and Keep Rivers and 330 km south-west of Darwin in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, the Legune coastal floodplain is the western-most coastal floodplain in the Northern Territory. The floodplain extends across extensive tidal flats to Turtle Point in the north and includes a range of freshwater wetland habitats. Large areas of mangroves are associated with the major rivers and channels. Despite close proximity to major rivers, the catchment area for the floodplain system is relatively small being supplied by Forsyth Creek and other smaller unnamed creeks. This differs from other coastal floodplain systems in the Territory which are directly inundated by the river they are associated with. Tenure and Land Use Google Earth imagery This coastal floodplain is predominantly pastoral leasehold land within one pastoral property (Legune). The main land use within the Site is grazing of cattle on native pastures. Significance Rating International Significance Ecological Values The Legune wetlands comprise extensive areas of diverse freshwater and saline wetland habitat and are known to support more than 40 000 mixed waterbirds, mostly Wandering Whistling-Ducks and various egrets and herons. At least four waterbird breeding colonies have also been recorded on the floodplain, including the second largest waterbird colony in the Territory. Turtle Point supports high density nesting of the Flatback Turtles and significant aggregations of migratory shorebirds. Management Issues Grazing pressure from cattle can affect wetland habitats, especially where access is not restricted during wet periods. Any future expansion of the Ord irrigation scheme is likely to affect the lower Keep River, which may have some impacts on the Legune floodplain. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract – Three new species of Ctenotus Storr, 1964 (Reptilia: Sauria: Scinci- dae), C. halysis sp. nov., C. mesotes sp. nov. and C. vagus sp. nov. are described. Previously confused with C. decaneurus Storr, 1970 or C. alacer Storr, 1970, C. halysis sp. nov. and C. vagus sp. nov. are members of the C. atlas species com- plex. Ctenotus mesotes sp. nov. was previously confused with C. tantillus Storr, 1975 and is a member of the C. schomburgkii species complex. The new taxa are terrestrial, occurring in woodland habitats on sandy soils in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and are distinguished from congeners by combi- nations of body patterns, mensural and meristic characteristics. Comments are provided on the taxonomic status of C. yampiensis Storr, 1975 which is considered, as in the original description, a subspecies of C. decaneurus. Re- descriptions of C. d. decaneurus and C. d. yampiensis are provided. A New Freshwater Catfish (Pisces: Ariidae) from Northern Australia

Pierce* Abstract A new species of fork-tailed catfish is described on the basis of 31 specimens collected in northern Australia between the Fitzroy River (Western Australia) and the Mitchell River (Queensland). Arius midgleyi sp. novo grows to at least 1.3 m TL and is distinguished from other Australo-Papuan ariids by a combination of charac ters including snout shape, barbel length, eye size, tooth arrangement and gill raker number and position. Comparison is made with other ariid species occurring in northern Australian rivers, including the morphologically similar A. leptaspis (Bleeker). Introduction The Timor Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria drainage systems (Lake 1971) approx imately represent the Leichhardtian zoogeographic region of Whitley (1947). The rainfall pattern in this region is dominated by the wet monsoon (occurring within the period November to April). Most rivers here traverse a flat coastal plain about 15 km wide before reaching the sea (Lake 1971). These rivers commonly possess wide flood plains and low gradients, often contracting to a chain of waterholes during the dry season; some (Gregory River; Fitzroy to Daly Rivers) have reaches of rapids or very deep gorges. The average annual discharge from this region is 69000 billion litres (Lake 1971), most of it occurring during the wet season. Five of Australia's 18 species of fork-tailed catfishes (Ariidae) are common in this northern region, yet were overlooked by Whitley (1947) and Iredale and Whitley (1938). The members of this family, which is distributed circumglobally in the tropics and subtropics, may inhabit the sea, rivers within tidal influence, or fresh waters. -
