NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of April 11 th FRESH EXPRESS CLASSIC at TPC STONEBRAE April 14-17 TPC Stonebrae, Hayward, Calif. (San Francisco Bay area) 2010 Champion: Kevin Chappell Purse: $600,000 First Prize: $108,000 4th of 26 events Golf Channel to televise all four rounds JASON DAY / OH SO CLOSE – 2007 Nationwide Tour graduate Jason Day showed his mettle on Sunday posting a four-under-par 68 in the pressure-packed stage that is Augusta National and the Masters on its final day. Day had much riding on his performance. Seeking to become the first Aussie to win the Masters had to be at or near the top of the list. The 23-year-old came up two strokes short in second place. His birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 were countered by winner Charl Schwartzel ’s birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie finish. Joining Day with the weight of a country watching were countryman Adam Scott , who also finished second, and Geoff Ogilvy , another shot back. Playing in his first Masters, Day equaled the lowest score (64 on Friday) in any round by a first-year participant (Lloyd Mangrum/1940, Mike Donald/1990 and David Toms/1998) and was one shot off the course record. He also set the 72-hole scoring record (12-under 276) for a first-time player. Day has now played in three majors and made every cut (2010 PGA Championship/T10 and 2010 British Open/T60). “I’m very happy how I handled myself and I’m very happy with how my game is right now,” he said. Day and Scott joined three other Aussies who were Masters’ runners-up ( Bruce Crampton /1972, Jack Newton /1980 and Greg Norman /1986, ’87, ’96). MORE DAY – Jason Day came to the States in 2007 as a 19-year-old to play the Nationwide Tour and people quickly took notice. He posted seven top-10 finishes in 19 starts, bringing a lot of excitement to the Tour. During one five-tournament stretch in the summer, he finished 1 st , T5, 2 nd , 3rd . His victory came in July at the Legend Financial Group Classic in Cleveland where he became the youngest winner of a PGA TOUR- sanctioned event (19 years, 7 months, 26 days). His season was effectively ended in the late summer when he encountered a problem with his right wrist. He fell from second on the money list to fifth at season’s end, but still collected $331,542 and earned his PGA TOUR card for 2008. The Queensland, Australia native demonstrated the same penchant for going low on the Nationwide Tour in 2007 he did on Friday with his 64 at Augusta National. In May of that year he shot 62 in the Fort Smith (Ark.) Classic. In late July, Day shot 62-63 (- 17) on the weekend at the Cox Classic in Omaha to finish one back of winner Roland Thatcher . His 125 total equaled the Tour’s lowest 36-hole total (since broken by a shot by Kevin Chappell). He played the front nine on Saturday in 28 shots and in 29 on Sunday. Day’s performance on the PGA TOUR in his first few seasons was impacted by the injured wrist and a subsequent sinus infection, which lingered into 2010 before he underwent surgery. With his health much improved and a few years under his belt, Day is currently the 24 th ranked player in the world and fifth in points to make the International team for the Presidents Cup, which will be played in his native Australia in November. TPC STONEBRAE HOSTS NATIONWIDE TOUR / FRESH EXPRESS CLASSIC FOR THIRD YEAR – The Nationwide Tour heads to California and TPC Stonebrae near San Francisco (Hayward) for the third year in a row this week. Six of last year’s top-11 finishers secured their cards. The Fresh Express Classic is the fourth Nationwide Tour event of 2011, following visits to Panama, Colombia and Louisiana. JERRY RICE / ENCORE AS HOST AND CONTESTANT – Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jerry Rice returns as tournament host of the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebraie and will compete as a professional contestant for the second year in a row. His participation and popularity attracted significant national attention. “My main goal was to help the tournament be successful (last year) and I am happy that we are able to do that again this year. I love working with the Nationwide Tour, the players and all the people here at Stonebrae.” The Jerry Rice 127 Foundation is among the benefiting organizations. NAVY’S BILLY HURLEY MAKES FIRST NATIONWIDE TOUR START OF 2011 – Former U.S. Navy lieutenant Billy Hurley was serving on a destroyer in the Persian Gulf last year, helping protect Iraqi oil platforms. He received a sponsor exemption. While at Navy, Hurley won seven college golf titles. The Leesburg, Va. native earned conditional status on the Nationwide Tour at last December’s PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament. He has received two PGA TOUR invitations this year (AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am/MC and Arnold Palmer Invitational/T62). TOM LEHMAN LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY – Tom Lehman has already been named player of the year on the Nationwide Tour (1991) and the PGA TOUR (1996). Though the season has a long way to go, Lehman has already won twice on the Champions Tour this year and has a 200+ point lead in the Charles Schwab Cup. No player has captured the Jack Nicklaus Trophy on all three tours. Fresh Express is a subsidiary of Chiquita Brands. NEXT UP – The Tour is off next week off before heading to Georgia for events in Valdosta (South Georgia Classic presented by First State and Trust Co., April 28-May 1) and Athens (Stadion Classic at UGA, May 5-8).
