DEAR FRIENDS,

Welcome you to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. It is truly exciting to celebrate the Kauffman Center’s fifth anniversary with you. Since grand opening in 2011, more than 2 million people have attended 1,500 performances offered on our stages. While those numbers alone are impressive, the range of artistic offerings on our stages has been truly dazzling: from opera to ballet, symphonic music to jazz, musical theater to organ concerts, spoken word to hip hop and much, much more. Kansas City audiences have been able to choose from an incredible array of artistic talent, types, and traditions. Through this depth of opportunities, the Kauffman Center has stayed true to its vision to enrich the lives of everyone in our community through extraordinary and diverse performing arts experiences To say that we couldn’t have done this without you is an understatement. Thousands of people in our community not only stepped forward to help build this remarkable venue, but they have returned again and again to purchase tickets, make charitable contributions, join our membership organizations and volunteer. It is a tribute to you and our generous community that the arts in Kansas City–and at the Kauffman Center– are so very vibrant. The Board of Directors of the Kauffman Center joins me in thanking you for your most generous and consistent support.

Kev Marcus

www.KAUFFMANCENTER.org BLACK VIOLIN

Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin) first met in Ft. Lauderdale and began

playing music together at the Dillard High School of the Performing Arts. They

became inspired to blend the classical techniques they learned during the day

with the hip-hop albums they were listening to at night. After college, Wil B. and

Kev reconvened and focused on developing an act covering hip-hop songs on

their instruments, creating BLACK VIOLIN. Two years after submitting a tape to

Showtime at the Apollo, they were invited to appear on the show – which they

won, and kept winning.

Using the momentum from Showtime at the Apollo, BLACK VIOLIN began

writing extensively and performing with extremely notable artists, including

Alicia Keys, Lil’ Wayne, Aerosmith, and more. The group tours heavily,

performing almost 200 shows a year, and has released three successful albums.

Their critically-acclaimed major label debut, Stereotypes, incorporates their many

musical influences from classical, R&B, soul, rock, and beyond. The pair creates

a distinctive, peerless sound that continues to resonate with a broad variety

of music lovers.

www.KAUFFMANCENTER.org Wil B. and Kev’s current Unity Tour focuses heavily on educational outreach and seeks to connect students and people of all ages, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds through music. At their performances, BLACK VIOLIN encourages the audience to pursue their dreams despite the labels or stereotypes that stand in the way. In the past year, the duo has performed for more than 100,000 students across the US and Europe and recently partnered with the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) to expand their impact as advocates for music education.

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts was pleased to host BLACK VIOLIN for a student matinee on November 17th, 2016 with approximately 1,500 students in attendance. More than 25 Kansas City area schools brought K-12 students to enjoy

BLACK VIOLIN’s inspiring sound and meaningful message for the next generation of classical music enthusiasts.

KAUFFMAN CENTER for the Performing Arts Kauffman Center

Featured Ensemble Member Hawthorn Bank

Hawthorn Bank joined Ensemble, the Kauffman Center’s business membership program, in part because of its philosophy of encouraging community engagement among its employees.

“Hawthorn Bank appreciates the Kauffman Center’s emphasis on making this outstanding facility available and accessible to everyone,” says Keith Asel, NW Regional President. “The center’s outreach to young people, Keith Asel affordable ticket prices and range of art NW Regional President programming is impressive.”

Through its headquarters in Jefferson City and branches around the state of Missouri, Hawthorn Bank has shared the word about the Kauffman Center’s cultural opportunities to all of its markets. “We tell employees, partners and clients that this is a regional cultural treasure. We encourage them to keep an eye on it and find a way to participate.” The Kauffman Center Employee Day and volunteer program offer interesting connections for the bank.

This philosophy led to an innovative partnership with Washington University’s Olin Business School. Asel encouraged the university to host a thought leadership session at the Kauffman Center in April 2013. “I’ve participated in their executive education and found it to be innovative and excellent. Hawthorn sponsored food for the one-day session and 300 people were introduced to the Kauffman Center,” says Asel. “It was a win-win situation and we hope to find more of these through our Ensemble membership.”

Kay Barnes and Tom Van Dyke (right) watched grandchildren create handprints for the Children’s Wall.

Featured Spotlight Premier Members Kay Barnes and Tom Van Dyke

Former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes and attorney Tom Van Dyke came to their love of the Kauffman Center through separate but convergent paths.

During her time as Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, Kay strongly supported the Kauffman Center vision. “I knew that it would be an iconic building and a wonderful gathering place for various populations in our community,” Kay said. She was a key player in securing the City’s agreement to build and operate the $47 million Arts District Garage.

Tom organized the Kauffman Center’s second organ recital, leveraging his board role with the National City Christian Church Foundation in Washington, D.C. to bring 85 local congregations together to produce a concert that reached more than 700 people.

Tom’s interests also extend to the Kauffman Center’s educational work. “I think that connecting young people with the arts is such an important part of an overall education,” Tom says.

So when Tom and Kay married in May 2015, they were in immediate agreement about continuing to support the Kauffman Center as Spotlight Premier members. Tom asked if some of their donation might be used to connect the Kauffman Center with one of his favorite causes — Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kansas City — by finding a way for ‘bigs’ and ‘littles’ to attend performances. Kauffman Center staff immediately made this connection a reality through the Open Doors Ticket Fund.
