The Process

Imagine picking any in the ocean that you possibly could. Well, that’s what we had to do. We started looking through all the ocean books Mrs. Mary Lou had. It took us about two days to find a perfect match, after narrowing down from three or four. Then finally we found the right one, and started on a research packet. We filled out how deep it lived, what it ate, where it lived, what its predators are (if they had any), and provided a sketch. Once Mrs. Mary Lou and Mrs. Bolton approved our research, the painting began.

First, we had to lightly draw the animal on a piece of white watercolor paper. We painted water on the parts where it was supposed to be the ocean, and then we put drops of blue in. When the blue was still wet, we sprinkled salt all over the paper. Doing this made the places where the salt was look like bubbles when it was shaken off. Once it was dry and the salt was off, we lightly went over our creature with the main color of its body with watercolor crayon. After that, we went over and over with colored pencils, so that we could achieve the exact coloring of our animal.

When we were completely done with painting our creature, we moved on to the research page. This is where we put all our research, in a fancy way. We used different colors, text boxes, and experimented with tools we have never used before. Then we added a picture of our painting to it and it was complete. But we still weren’t done yet!

After this, Mrs. Mary Lou showed us how to make clay sculptures of our . We had to roll our clay into a certain length, and then we used pin tools to make details in the animals. When we were done, Mrs. Mary Lou put them in the kiln. When they were done firing, we painted them with underglaze in the color of our choice. Now that they are dried, they look spectacular, and we are all very proud of our work!
