The Grand Plan Report 2017–2018 2 The Grand Plan Report 2017–2018 2 “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do and we look to lead the way in the event industry. “We are custodians of this great building, this fantastic venue and this incredible From being one of the first to achieve the industry ISO 2012:1 standard back in 2012, we launched business and we are responsible for our Grand Plan in 2017: our vision for continuing to improve, build on and share the inspiring work securing its long term future.” Anna Golden being done by the team. This is a staff-led Commercial Director initiative that has the support of everyone in our business – from the Board and across every department, we have all been through training and have contributed our ideas for the future. I believe that we can continue to lead others and that we all have a role to play in doing this. Producing this, our first Grand Plan report, is part of that commitment. We want to demonstrate what is possible, share what we have achieved and what we still have to do, as this is a Plan with big ideas and a very long future. It is our Grand Plan. It’s been a fantastic two years of change and progress at Olympia London and I look forward to playing my part in its development.” Nigel Nathan Group Managing Director Introduction 4 Contents Our Team 6 Awards 7 Community 8 Our charitable trust 9 People matter 10 Charitable giving 11 Volunteering 14 Results 15 Environment 16 Energy 17 Waste 18 Air quality 19 Practice what you preach 20 Results 22 Education 23 Communicate, communicate, 24 communicate Partnering for the future 25 Leadership 26 Procurement 27 Results 28 Next Steps 29 Introduction 4 Olympia London opened its doors in 1886 We realised the venue was already achieving as an inspiring event space. This vision is supported by our company values which define the way we work: Care, Commitment, Passion, Respect and Trust. The Grand Plan is our programme to ensure a sustainable future. It was launched in 2017 following a detailed sustainability study of the venue and our work practices. This is our Grand Plan: a strategy for championing green practices, connecting communities and empowering our staff, partners and peers. 5 Our ultimate goal is to leave a positive impact through all that we do, focusing on three areas: Community, Education, Environment. We are committed to understanding, supporting and raising awareness of our local community’s needs. What have we done? Our Charitable Trust – the Earls Court and Olympia Charitable Trust – provides support to charities and organisations within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, as well as the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Its primary focus is to benefit young people, with an emphasis on education, health and personal development. 37 Our charitable trust Community 9 Our charitable trust is a standalone charity that includes councillors from the London Boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham amongst its trustees. Beneficiaries in 2017 and 2018 included: • The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Foundation: funds to support those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire, which was less than 2 miles from our venue. In addition, we offered storage and transport to accommodate other donations on behalf of the survivors and the victims’ relatives. • Avonmore Primary School: just a few yards from the venue and at the heart of Kensington. Our Charitable Trust donated funds to provide every pupil with brand new sets of re-designed uniforms. • Brook Green Nursery: this local nursery needed an injection of capital to continue offering affordable childcare in Hammersmith. The Charitable Trust provided financial support to help the institution continue in its mission as a standalone charity organisation. People matter Community 10 We want all those who work for Olympia as coffee mornings, concerts and by London to be empowered and proud to be sponsoring the Kensington Olympia Festival part of the team; all those who live near us of Music and the Arts, for example. • POLICY GG5 Growing a Good Economy 1.4.8 London Has Lost 30
POLICY GG5 Growing a good economy 1.4.8 London has lost 30% of London’s and 16% of the UK’s vital exhibition space. This must be replaced. Earl's Court is synonymous with exhibitions and the loss of Earls Court Exhibition Centre has not only damaged our economy but torn the heart out of the area. The Exhibition Industry appears to be unappreciated and its importance subsumed in the minds of some as meetings and tourism. It is a highly successful industry in its own right which is not subject to government subsidy and whose members create and host world-class events in the UK and around the globe. The Association of Event Venues, the Association of Event Organisers (AEO) and the Event Supplier and Services Association are undertaking a programme of research into the size, scale and characteristics of the UK exhibitions sector and published a report in February 2018 called ‘The Size and Scale Index for Events (SASiE) in 2016’. According to this report, exhibitions are broken down into a number of categories, these include, and I quote: Trade – an exhibition aimed primarily at those working within a particular trade sector. Consumer – also known as ‘public’- an exhibition that is primarily organised to attract the consumer or general public. Usually makes a charge for admission. Outdoor – an exhibition which primarily uses outdoor space, often with temporary structures which may or may not be held at a qualifying venue. An exhibition organiser – a company or individual that rents venue space for an exhibition and resells that space to exhibitors or exhibition participants.
