On Friday the 26th July the entire student body of CDSHS celebrated the great happenings and achievements of Semester 1, 2019 as well as seeing some of our incredibly talented students perform. Not only was it a joy to gather together in our fabulous new facility, The Paul Bancroft Centre, joy abounded in the performances and presentations!

Students and staff were buzzing with excitement after the parade which highlighted the wealth of opportunities available at CDSHS. For students who have not attended another high school it’s easy for them to think that all high schools are like Cleveland. Students were encouraged to get involved in the school and make the most of the unique opportunities they have at CDSHS.

Thanks and congratulations to Mrs Alina Ryan, Year 7 Deputy Principal, for her leadership and all staff and students who played key roles. This was an incredible morning that makes us proud to wear the Maroon and White!

What a fantastic evening we had on Friday evening at the 2019 Senior Formal! It was great to see the Year 12 students having so much fun, from their grand arrivals to their grand moves on the dance floor! The Class of 2019 displayed an optimistic sense of camaraderie as they mingled, chatted and danced. These students very much reflected the values of Cleveland District High School and were a credit to themselves. Thanks and congratulations to Ms Victoria Sadleir for all her work and dedication to ensuring the night such a success. Thank you to all staff who helped and supported this milestone event that our students will always remember.

The Courses and Careers Expo has become an important event in the school calendar and is a good source of information for students preparing for subject selection or deciding on their pathway for future study and employment, which is key during SET planning.

Be sure to ask your student about what interested them from all of the exhibitors, including apprenticeship centres, industry groups, Universities and TAFE Colleges. For families who want further information about TAFE specifically, check out this link for details of their open day being held on Sunday, 11th August from 10am – 2pm.

Diploma Program (IBDP) and the benefits for students undertaking it. The evening was well attended and we were pleased to welcome back past IBDP students to talk about their experience and answer questions.

You can also collect an information pack and application form from Mrs Przewloka. Further information is also available on the IBO website.

We are pleased to introduce to the school community our inaugural Student Media Committee. This dedicated group of students have been working with Mrs Ainsley Young this year, compiling our annual School Magazine. In addition, they have commenced reporting on school activities and events. They have been given the job of ‘sniffing out a story’ for our school newsletter, social media and website. They will also create written articles, photographs and short videos to document life at our school. Their first short film was shown at our Positive Parade and was very well received. Well done Kezia, Hannah, Ben, Holly, Alina, Chuc and Harleen.

Creative Arts News

Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage (CGEN) is an award- winning arena spectacular that showcases the talent of our Queensland state school students. Over four outstanding performances at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 19th and 20th July 1,500 students wowed audiences!

CDSHS had 44 students involved this year in a range of arts areas including dance, orchestra, choir, backing vocals, drumline and massed strings. Well done to our staff and students for representing the school with such pride and professionalism. Mikaela has given us a student’s insight into the C Gen experience:

Over the past year, 44 students from Cleveland District State High School underwent numerous auditions and worked tirelessly to come together with students from all around Queensland to perform in Creative Generations - State Schools Onstage. Since May this year, everyone had been attending multiple full-day rehearsals in the city. The week leading up to the live shows was very tiring, as we had 12+ hour rehearsals at the venue, constantly running through the show. Overall, we performed 4 shows and you can see it on Channel 10 on the 28th of September. Cleveland High made a huge contribution and impact on the show as we had 3 teachers; Ashley Higgins, Rebecca Purnell and Shane Purnell involved. These teachers are a part of the CGEN team and teach, conduct and play along with the students. We also had multiple featured artists, from the senior grades in our school. The atmosphere of performing across the 3 days is something you cannot put into words, it’s like this rush of adrenaline and excitement from the moment you walk on stage. The whole Creative Generations team is like one big family, so you really feel welcome and comfortable around everyone. You meet new people each day and we all learn and support each other whenever possible. On the actual day of our performances it can be extremely nerve-wrecking and full on, but when surrounded by such amazing people you feel much calmer and become extremely excited for every performance to come.

Language Department News – 2019 QUT Chinese Cultural Camp

During the recent school holidays from 10 to 12 July, 16 of our Chinese studying students attended a three-day Cultural Camp hosted by the Confucius Institute. The students participated in a series of language and culture learning sessions (e.g. Chinese calligraphy, traditional painting, Chinese music and film appreciation and Chinese hip-hop)

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 16 of 33

and made many like-minded friends from other schools! Below is a camp summary written by our year 9 student, Madeline.

The Confucius Institute “work with schools, teachers, school leaders, professionals, businesses and people in the community to help develop understandings of Chinese language and culture through professional learning programs and provide opportunities for schools to engage with Chinese-speaking worlds.” In my opinion, this summary of their targeted work provided by the institute accurately describes the experience had by many of my peers and I when we embarked on a 2 and-a-half day intensive learning experience these past school holidays. This year’s annual Chinese Language and Culture camp ran by QUT’s Confucius Institute definitely exceeded expectations.

Aside from evident surface-level features such as great meals, well- kept cabins, and new-found friends, there were much more valuable things to be praised. For example, the seamless blending of cultural recognition and understanding, and thorough language-based education. Moreover, many of the attending students’ first language is not Chinese, and inevitable mistakes were met with a sympathetic helping hand from all staff.

Overall, this camp can be seen as an extremely beneficial resource for Cleveland High’s Chinese-learning students and an extraordinary opportunity to be offered at our school. The Confucius Institute of QUT has truly outdone themselves and the camp was really ‘六六六’ (Slang popular amongst Mandarin-speaking teenagers meaning ‘cool/awesome’).

Kani Technical High School Study Tour

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 17 of 33

A group of 13 students and 2 teachers, Mr Tomohiro Kakumu, Deputy Principal and Ms Izumi Watanabe, English Teacher from our sister school, Kani Technical High School visited our school from 25th to 29th July. The group enjoyed a homestay with our wonderful school families and experienced Australian school life including visits to various classes with their homestay buddies. Amazing intercultural interactions and use of language skills were witnessed in our numerous Japanese classes as the students engaged in communicative activities and games. It was a very successful week, strong bonds were formed between students and homestay families and our sister school relationship with Kani Technical High School continues to go from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing our Japanese friends again when we visit during the Japan Tour in December 2020.

Bay View State School Multicultural Day

On Friday, 19th July, Year 9 students who study Mandarin Lauren, Jemma, Madeline and Ryan were invited to perform the Chinese Lion Dance at Bayview State School’s Multicultural Day. The Lions joined the school choir in their performance of “We are Australian” and the Parade of Nations. The primary school students were captivated by the colourful dragons and it was a pleasure to be involved in their day of celebration, providing an opportunity to promote and encourage the study of language and culture whilst strengthening relationships with our feeder school. Thank you to our wonderful lion dancers!

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 18 of 33

Llewellyn Tennant (Class of 2015) has recently been offered a position in Tokyo, Japan as an Assistant English Teacher through the Japanese and Exchange Teaching Programme (JET).

Llewellyn’s Japanese studies commenced when he was in Year 6 and at first he didn’t enjoy it, believing it was just another subject he had to endure. However, during his final year at CDSHS, Llewellyn’s Year 12 Japanese teacher, Ms Venamore and Ms Crawford, Principal of Tsukuba International School, Japan who was visiting our school for a few weeks, suggested that Llewellyn participate in a short term exchange at Ms Crawford’s school. This was his first overseas experience and he immediately fell in love with Japan’s culture and language. In fact, he so enjoyed the experience he decided to study Languages and Linguistics majoring in Japanese at Griffith University.

It’s fantastic to see all Llewellyn’s hard work, perseverance and passion for the Japanese language come to fruition and we wish him all the best as he embarks the next exciting chapter of his working life.

At the beginning of Term 3 Cleveland was delighted to welcome into our midst a group of 22 new international students. These students are already experiencing the positive impact of international exchange and are keen to continue engaging with our local students. After speaking to them, they report they are surprised and interested in the Australian schooling system with both the active use of laptops and moving from building to building for the varying classes being new and different. They are eager to experience the Aussie way of life and are enjoying immersing themselves into the Australian culture.

We are pleased to welcome the following students to Cleveland: Year 10: Emil, Mami, Saya, Hung Year 11: Ludovica, Andrea Bonetti, Pia, Sara, Chiara, Aurora, Viola, Lisa, Elena, Nora, Elisa-Sophie, Maria, Filippo, Danial, Silvia, Jule, Michelangelo and Lorenzo.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News - Goompi NAIDOC Community Day

Redlands to present Quandamooka dances led by songman, Josh Walker and didgeridoo player, Tyrone Beard.

Congratulations to the indigenous support team for the successful Goompi excursion to allow many of our students a unique and engaging experience.

Debating News

The year 10 debating team won their first two debates in the Queensland Debating Union finals. The topic for the first debate was ‘That we should stop teaching Shakespeare in schools’, and as the affirmative team, it was their job to convince the audience that this statement is correct. Although their love of Shakespeare made this a difficult topic at first, the students were able to develop some convincing arguments, which they delivered with confidence. For the second debate, students needed to consider the statement ‘That we should ban all plastics’. They were the negative team, so they needed to argue that this statement is false. The students won by two points, which is a fantastic achievement. The next debate will be a short preparation debate. Students will be given the topic on the night, and will have only one hour to construct their arguments and write their speeches. Congratulations to all students in the team, and good luck with the next debate.

The year 7 debating team experienced their very first debate on Thursday, 1st August. The topic was “That the Government should pay pocket money to children” and they were the negative team. This debate was a huge learning experience and all team members did a terrific job. It was a close debate and they lost by one point. They are now using all they have learned to prepare for their next debate! Good luck!

School Notice - Lost Property

Parents, if your student has lost any uniform or other items at school (jumpers in particular), please ask them to come and check the Library Lost Property.

All items that are named are also listed in the daily school notices, so they are able to check there as well. Our Lost Property section is currently overflowing with items.

School Notice – Sick Bay Medication

If your child carries an Epipen or Ventolin with them at school, please check the expiry date to ensure it is in- date. It is also a good idea to take a note of the expiry date so that you can replace the medication before it expires.

Please also note, school staff will not administer medication that you can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets (e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has been prescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. For example, the school would administer paracetamol to a student only if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for a short time after dental treatment, and this is indicated on the packaging.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we ask all parents to acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.

When your child’s medication is no longer required to be kept at school, please collect all unused medication. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our students safe and healthy.

Student Council News

Our Student Council had our first meeting for term 3 and have started our “Share the Dignity” Campaign. This campaign involves collecting sanitary items for homeless women and girls and we have established two collection points: one in the library and one in the administration office. The campaign will run throughout August and we would appreciate any donation you are able to make. We have outlined some vital statistics are below (*) and there is a host of additional information on the Share the Dignity website.

The Student Council will also be working hard to fundraise by running the canteen at the Junior School Dance and hosting our Term 3 Gold Coin Day on the 6th September. Mark your diary to come to school on the 6th September dressed to the theme of Sport or your favourite sporting team!

Finally, make sure you consider applying for the Premiers Anzac Prize. The 2020 Premier’s Anzac Prize is proudly presented in partnership with RSL Queensland and provides a life-changing opportunity for 8 high school students to experience the Anzac tradition first-hand and how the Anzac legacy relates to modern Australian life.

Applications have now opened, and eligible Queensland high school students in Years 8-11 are invited to apply through their school. Each state school or accredited non-state school may nominate up to 2 students.

Successful students and 2 teacher chaperones will take part in a 4-5 months research program prior to going on a 16-day tour of important memorial sites in London and the Western Front battlefields in France and Belgium, in April/May 2020. Applications close 5pm Friday 20 September 2019. If you or your child want further information click on this link or students may visit Ms Joni Edwards in A Block Staffroom.

(*) This year our Student Council are supporting the charity Share The Dignity. Homeless women need our help. On any given night in Australia, 1 in 200 people are homeless. 44% are female. 27% are children under the age of 18. Family violence is the number one reason people present to homeless services. 55% of

females cite this reason. We need your donation. When you donate sanitary products to Share The Dignity, you’re donating much more than pads and tampons. You’re giving a woman experiencing homelessness or financial crisis the essentials, so she doesn’t need to choose between food and dignity. Next time you’re doing your shopping, keep in mind: one box for me, one box for her.

Staffroom News – our own Great Australian Baker!

For many years now Industrial Design and Technology teacher, Mr Brian Brennan has worked with students teaching graphics, design, woodwork and agricultural practices. He’s a popular teacher with a secret softer side … he is an amazing cook and baker. Brian sometimes shares his secret family recipes with staff but he also bakes competitively.

Brian has been entering cakes in local shows for about 10 years now and most recently, at the Mt Gravatt Show. The Sheep Show Team weren't the only ones on display at the Show! Brian's cakes included a Carrot & Walnut cake with lemon and cream cheese icing, a Banana cake with lemon icing, Date Loaf and an amazing looking Chocolate Cake. Brian usually wins at least one 1st for his wonderful cakes, but kept a consistent result this time around winning 2nd for each of his entries. Congratulations Brian! Keep up your great work, the staff and students love receiving your left overs and practice cakes!

Staffroom News – our own Ninja Warrior!

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 26 of 33

We are all so proud of Mr Nathan Burley for his recent appearance on Australian Ninja Warrior! We sent some students to interview him and his inspirational answers are below! We can’t wait for Season 4!

What inspired you to try out for Ninja? The series started in Japan close to 20 years ago. I started watching the show to see some big wipe-outs but I got hooked by the extreme difficulty of completing all the obstacles and how athletic the ninjas were.

When I saw Australian Ninja Warrior was in production, I got excited. I was a bit naïve to think that you just had to apply and you would get a run. I took a few parkour classes and waited for my run… and waited… and waited. I didn’t receive a phone call and was shocked. I realised that you have to seriously train and develop your ninja character if you want to have a shot. So I did train… a lot. I was training 5/6 days a week for over 3 years before I was deemed fit enough to tackle the course.

What motivates you to keep training, how often you train and what ‘life lessons’ you have learned?

I have 3 big goals in my life. 1. Be good to my family and friends. 2. Get the most out of my students as possible and 3. Win the Australian Ninja Warrior Grand Final. All my actions have to help me achieve these goals. If they hinder my progress, I remove it from my life.

My biggest lessons learnt from my Ninja career is to find a passion in your life. Pursue that passion and love the highs and lows that will come your way as you know each step is one closer to goal achievement.

Finally, I learnt to surround yourself with like-minded, positive and motivated individuals to learn from each other and support each other through the tough times. Go Southside Ninjas!!!

Does your Ninja experience impact your classroom teaching? My 3 goals are not separate from each other. I use my passion for Ninja Warrior to get the best out of my students. Our class will work hard to get all our learning objectives done in a lesson so there is time to watch a Ninja Warrior run at the end of class. I find that sitting for an hour can make most people restless and unfocused. We have breaks where we get up and stretch, do a few push ups or dance. The blood starts flowing and helps the brain concentrate.

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 27 of 33

Finally, I share my secrets learnt about successful goal setting with the students and they apply it to their schooling or hobbies.

Can you tell us about the parkour activities you run for the students during sport? To share my love of movement with students, I have become a qualified level 1 parkour instructor and ZUU animal movements calisthenics movement instructor.

Through the practice of good technique, we learn to build strength and mobility. This is a non-competitive, high intensity work out the year 7s enjoy on a Friday afternoon. It gets extremely tiring at times but I am impressed by the year 7s fighting spirit! They not only finish the work out but some of the crazy pork chops ask to go another round! I am obliged to join them, if even I have jelly legs.

What it was like competing on Australian Ninja … were you nervous? Australian Ninja Warrior was filmed at night times in Melbourne this season. You only get one chance and you are not allowed to practice the obstacles. You have to use your imagination to visualize what the obstacle will be like and how to beat it. I was extremely nervous leading up to it. Think about performing an oral speech in class, then times the audience to be all of Australia! Not only do you have to speak to the nation, you have to show your athletic abilities also!

Once the bell goes to start your run, the nerves turn to energy and you have never felt more alive or ‘in the moment.’

Unfortunately, I also know what the water feels like (cold) but I also know everyone falls at some point. It is the champions who get back up again!

Chaplaincy News – Outbreak Camp

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 28 of 33

The spring holidays will be here sooner than we realise, and that means it is time for Outbreak Surf – an annual camp organised for Redland’s High School students by the school chappies and local youth group leaders.

Students are invited to enjoy 5 days packed with the best the Sunny Coast has to offer. The program includes water-tubing, rock climbing, a Lazerzone lock-in, ice-skating and many trips to the beach. At campsite there will be lots of time to hang out with other campers, play pool or table tennis, and enjoy the craziness of the night time program and the live music.

The Christian youth leader team are fully trained by SU Queensland. Scripture Union have been organising camps for over 100 years, so parents can be sure their children will have a safe and enjoyable camp with an amazing supportive atmosphere. There will even be time to talk about life, God, faith, friendship, goals and anything else that campers want to discuss.

Spots on Outbreak Surf are limited, so for information and booking please visit the website or call the school and ask to speak to Chappy Neale or Sarah in the C-Block Drop-In Centre. The camp costs $300, but our chaplains have organised some $100 sponsorships for Cleveland High students to assist parents with camp costs.

News from our Guidance Officers

This month on SchoolTV - Positive Parenting

Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!

Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being at an all- time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.

Many parents today are over-protective, resulting in children being less independent, unable to problem-solve or self-regulate. Parents are failing to set clear boundaries, which is unfortunately making kids feel less secure. There is too much pressure on kids today. Parents fill their days with too many activities in an effort to avoid their child’s boredom.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn what is the best approach for primary and secondary school aged children. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

News from our School Nurse

If you’re like most people, you’re probably keeping track of a big, long list of things. But what about your teeth? Yes, how is your oral health tracking?

That’s the question being asked this Dental Health Week (5-11 August), an annual event run by the Australian Dental Association which aims to make everyone aware of the key things they need to do to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

You might think it doesn't really matter if you miss a bit of flossing, skimp on the thoroughness of your brushing, live on a diet of burgers and fries or tell your dentist "thanks but no thanks, I'll see you in 2022". But of course, like anything that's necessary and good for you, it does matter and it's definitely worth adding to your list of daily To Do’s.

Brushing If you're like most people, there’s not a whole of brushing going on. In fact, only 50% of Australians brush twice a day. The reality is that a quick, occasional dash along your teeth with a hope and a prayer is not going to cut it. As your dentist will tell you, you need to brush for at least two minutes twice a day, taking care to use a soft-bristled toothbrush (they're less damaging to your teeth and gums than their harder counterparts) to clean your teeth systematically along all surfaces, always brushing in small, circular motions.

Flossing Flossing (or using an interdental brush) once a day is important because it removes plaque from between your teeth which goes a long way in helping to prevent gum disease, tooth decay and halitosis ("bad breath"). It's not something that should be rushed either. Take your time, using a gentle side-to-side motion with about 45cm wound around your middle fingers and thumb. If you're not sure about the right technique, have a chat to your dentist who can show you all the right flossing moves.

Say "Hello!" To your dentist If you have a regular dentist, and it is a good idea to have one since it means your teeth will get the consistent care they need, you should be seeing them more often than you probably are, with one survey revealing that 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years. Yup, that’s right – two whole years. Sure, that’s extra time for catching on Game of Thrones but is it good for your teeth, and the health of your whole mouth? Not really. You should really be seeing your dentist every 6 to 12 months or as needed to keep on top of your dental health.

Don’t have a regular dentist? We can help with that! The ADA’s Find a Dentist and Choosing a Dentist make it easy!

Eat and drink well We all love junk food, but alas, it does not love us back. In fact, not only does it make fitting into those jeans you love a struggle, but it’s not good for our mouth at all. You’re much better drinking water, limiting sugar intake (watch out for hidden sugars in drinks and foods), avoid snacking between meals, instead sticking to three meals a day and concentrating on the good stuff like vegetables and dairy products. Of

course, before you make any major dietary changes, first check with a healthcare professional.

How do we know the average Aussie isn’t giving their dental health the required amount of attention? Australia’s Oral Health Tracker, launched last year, is a national report card on the health of our mouths and how this impacts how healthy we are overall. Click the link above to find out more.

Community News - Teens Connect Program

Griffith University Mount Gravatt Psychology Clinic are currently running a group treatment program through the for adolescents with social anxiety disorder. The program, called Teens Connect, is completely free for eligible adolescents aged 13 to 17 years old and their parents/guardians.

Social anxiety occurs when teens are extremely concerned about the impressions they make to other people, and worry excessively about making a mistake or embarrassing themselves around other people. This can have long-lasting negative consequences for teens’ wellbeing in a range of areas, including their academic performance, social

http://clevelanddistrictstatehighschool.cmail20.com/t/ViewEmail/r/352C1D9A06C220... 6/08/2019 Page 32 of 33

relationships, psychological health, and more. Without treatment, these problems are unlikely to get better on their own, and in fact, often get more disabling over time as teens face increasing social demands with age. Untreated social anxiety can lead to the development of depression and substance abuse behaviours, and make 0 difficult to successfully transition into the workforce or higher education.

Teen Connect would like to reach as many families as we can to give them the opportunity to participate. Email: [email protected]
