It should be read in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Part 9 of the Public Health etc Scotland) Act 2008. The new provisions in Part 9 of the Public Health etc (Scotland) Act 2008 are: Include insect nuisance, artificial light pollution and nuisance associated with water as statutory nuisances in line with legislation in England and Wales; Introduce a regulation-making power to amend the statutory nuisance regime in the future; Introduce a new fixed penalty regime for non-compliance with an abatement notice served under s80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990; Amend the Water Services etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 in relation to sewerage nuisance This document is primarily procedural advice for the attention of the Environmental Health Officers and other local authority officials who investigate Statutory Nuisance complaints. It provides procedural advice on the provisions of Part 9 of the Public Health etc (Scotland) Act 2008, which are scheduled for commencement on 26th January 2009. -

Abstract Composition, diversity and abundance of rocky intertidal mollusks and their relationship with the environmental parameters, viz. water quality, total organic matter and calcium carbonate were determined. A total of 43 species were identified, of which 41 species belong to Class Gastropoda under 18 families and 2 species were categorized under Class Bivalvia from 2 families. Using several diversity indices, results revealed high diversity and equitability values in the 2 sampling sites. Moreover, comparison of the mollusks abundance between the 2 sampling stations showed station 2 to be dominantly abundant with Cerithium stercusmuscarum comprising almost one-third of the total population. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that total organic matter and calcium carbonate in the sediment may have influenced the abundance of mollusk assemblage in station 2. The results obtained from the study are vital in order to strongly support the need to continue monitoring the Lugait marine sanctuary and its nearby surroundings. -

Bába Abstract: The authors evaluated the samples collected by Marninus De Smit in 1999 at the collection site of Katavothres, on the isle of Kefalinia, Greece. Key-words: Katavothers, Greece, Marin mollusc fauna Material and methods Sample collections were carried out in a southern bay of the isle of Kefalinia, on the coast of Katavothres (09.06.1999.) For the determination of the order of families we used Poppe, G. T.–Gotto, Y. (1991–1993) Vol. I-II. For the identification of species we gave preference to the following publications: Nordsieik, F. (1968, 1969, 1972) Poppe, G. T.–Gotto, Y. (1991, 1993), D’ Angeló–Gargiullo, S. (1978) and also Ghisotti, F.–Melone, G. (1971, 1972, 1975) Results The collections yielded species from Scaphopoda, Lamellibranchiata and Gastropoda class- es. Altogether 7697 individuals belonging to 188 species were collected. (Scaphopoda: 1 family 1 species, Lamellibranchiata: 30 families 90 species 3811 specimen, Gastropoda: 42 families 188 species 7697 specimen). From the Bivalvia the Musculus laevigatus is a cir- cumpolar, the Hiatellidae: Hiatella arctica is a boreal circumpolar species. From the Gastropoda the Trochidae: Clanculus striatus, Phasianellidae: Tricolia miniata are known as belonging to the Southern Mediterranean. Most probably they spread due shipping. From most of the species encountered 1-40 individuals were found. More than 100 indi- viduals were collected from the species below: Jujubinus striatus, Gibbula philberti, Truncatella subcylindrica, Alvania consociella, Bittium latreilli, Bittium reticulatum, Cerithium alucaster, Gibberula miliaria, Granulina clandestina. Summary From the alluvial deposits on an island near Greece 11 508 individuals from 279 species of 72 families from 3 orders were encountered. -

Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. New records of the rare gastropods Erato voluta and Simnia patula, and first record of Simnia hiscocki from Norway. Fauna norvegica 37: 20-24. New records of rare gastropod species are reported. A live specimen of Erato voluta (Gastropoda: Triviidae), a species considered to have a far more southern distribution, has been found from outside the Trondheimsfjord. The specimen was sampled from a gravel habitat with Modiolus shells at 49–94 m depth, and was found among compound ascidians, its typical food resource. Live specimens of Simnia patula (Caenogastropoda: Ovulidae) have during the later years repeatedly been observed on locations on the coast of central Norway, which is documented by in situ observations. In Egersund on the southwest coast of Norway a specimen of Simnia hiscocki was in March 2017 observed for the first time from Norwegian waters, a species earlier only found on the south-west coast of England. Also this was documented by pictures and in situ observations. The specimen of Simnia hiscocki was for the first time found on the octocoral Swiftia pallida. doi: 10.5324/fn.v37i0.2160. FlECALPELLETSof the following species are described :- Gibbula cineraria (Linn.). G. umbilicalis (Da Costa). G. tumida (Montagu). G. magus (Linn.). Oantharus (Jujubinus) clelandi (Wood). Oalliostomazizyphinum (Linn.). Of the various molluscan frecalpellets so far described, none have shown a very high degree either of internal differentiation, or of external sculp- turing. In the latter respect the most complicated are perhaps those of the Nuculidre (Moore, 1) and the Pectinidre (Moore,2). In neither of these groups is there any trace of internal localisation of different types of material, but in the Mytilidre (Moore, 2) there is, in some species, a sorting of the finer material to the lateral regions of the frecal ribbon, and of the courser material to the centre. There is not however any clear-cut line of demarcation between the two regions. In the present group there is, in all the species described except Oalliostomazizyphinum, a localisation of the constituent materials accord- ing to their grade into certain definite regions of the pellet; and there is further, in all except Calliostoma, a very complex system of surface sculpturing. The pellets of Gibbula umbilicalis and G. cineraria may frequently be seen on the shore, where their peculiar shape makes them easily recognis- able. Moorhouse (3), speaking of Trochus niloticus from Low Isles, on the Great Barrier Reef, says: "Feeding appears to proceed at every opportunity, so that the amount of frecal matter deposited is very great. -

Canada T6G 2E9 and Bamfield Marine Station, Bamfield, British Columbia, Canada VOR 1BO ABSTRACT Macroc~nematographicvideo recordings showed that Lacuna spp can ploduce a mucous thread and Initiate drifting when exposed to water flows (parhcularly oscillating currents) The gastropods can play an active role in thelr dispersal by raislng the metapodlum - regardless of their orientahon to water flow direction - until most of the sole s surface no longer contacts the substratum (only the most antenor [propodial] region remalns flued) The mucus produced and accumulated at the posterior of the sole of the foot is then taken away \mth the water current, and stretched up to 160 times the length of the gastropod The mucous thread pulled by water currents then transports the gastropod enabling it to drift in an almost neutrally buoyant fashion In Lacuna spp , the productton of a mucous thread also greatly reduces sinking rates (3- to 8-fold),while extension of the foot and antennae during the descent does not Mucous threads also increase the drifting gastropod s ability to obtain rapid contact with, and attach to, nearby substrata INTRODUCTION long invisible mucous threads Increase the hydrody- namic drag on juveniles and allow drifting in the water Post-metamorphic drifting is a widespread phenome- column as juveniles are transported by water currents non in benthic marine molluscs. -
