About Us Brief History on Sikkim Not much is known about Sikkim's ancient history, except for the fact that the first inhabitants were the Lepchas or Rong (ravine folk). Lepchas are said to have come from to the region from the Assam and Myanmar side. During 1200 AD Sikkim was absorbed by other clans from Tibet which included the Namgyal clan, who arrived in the 1400's and steadily won political control over Sikkim. In 1642, Phuntsog Namgyal (1604-1670) became the Chogyal (king). He presided over a social system based on Tibetan Lamaistic Buddhism. His descendants of Phuntsog Namgyal ruled Sikkim for more than 330 years. During the 1700's, Sikkim suffered continuous attacks from Nepal and Bhutan, after which it lost much of its territory. Nepalese also came to Sikkim and settled there as farmers. By the 1800's, Sikkim's population was culturally very complicated, and internal conflict resulted. In 1814-1815, Sikkim backed the British in a successful war against Nepal, and won back some of its territory, once lost. In 1835, the British East India Company acquired the health resort of Darjeeling from Sikkim. During the mid-1800's, Sikkim violently withstand attempts to bring it under British rule, but in 1861 it finally became a British colony. The British had access through Sikkim to Tibet, and Sikkim's independent status was recognized. In 1890, Britain and China signed a convention recognising the border between Sikkim and Tibet. NOTIFICATION The draft of the Sikkim Minimum Wages Rules, 2004 which the State Government proposes to issue in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 30 of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, ( 11 of 1948 ), is hereby published as required under sub- Section (1) of Section 30 of the said Act for information of all persons likely to be affected thereby and notice is hereby given that the said draft rules would be taken into consideration after expiry of a period of 45 (forty five) days from the date on which the notification is published in the Official Gazette. Any objections or suggestions which may be received from any person with respect to the said draft before the expiry of the period so specified will be considered by the State Government. DRAFT RULES Short title and 1. (1) These rules may be called the Sikkim Minimum Wages Rules,2004. commencement (2) They shall be deemed to have come into force on the 1st day of October, 2004 Definition 2. In these rules, unless the context otherwise requires,— (1) (a) “ Act” means the Minimum Wages Act, 1948; (b) “ Authority” means the authority appointed under sub- section (1) of section 20; (c) “ Board” means the Advisory Board appointed under section 7; (d) “ Chairman” means the Chairman of the Advisory Board or the Committee, as the case may be, appointed under section 9; (e) “ Committee” means a Committee appointed under clause (a) of sub- section (1) of section 5 and includes a Sub- committee appointed under that section; (f) “ form “ means a form appended to these rules; (g) “ Inspector” means a person appointed as Inspector under section 19; (h) “ Section” means a section of the Act; (2) All other words and expressions used herein and not defined shall have the meanings respectively assigned to them under the Act.

Abstract: Needless to say, Sikkim is a wonderful tourist destination of our country. South district of Sikkim is comparatively smaller than three other districts of this state. However, it has some of the most amazing places to visit. The nature lovers, adventurists, as well as the other tourists who are very much interested for angling, rafting, camping, trekking, wildlife exploration etc. find this South district as the most ideal destination for their complete enjoyment as it really acts as a healing agent. The present study deals with the infrastructure, scope and possibility of Namchi as the main tourist focus of South Sikkim. This area has the high natural potential of being an excellent tourist attraction of South Sikkim. But in the field of tourism over grooming is taking place because of the huge investment of private business houses and religious trust foundation. Keywords: tourist destination, trekking, rafting, tourism infrastructure. Introduction In terms of Gross Domestic Product, tourism is the second largest contributory sector in Sikkim. This state provides a wide potential in tourism that has yet largely remained unexploited. The perennially snow-capped mountains, lush green tropical and temperate forests, gurgling streams and the rich flora and fauna are all present there for the tourists to savor. The State Government aims at promoting sustainable tourism and simultaneously encourages the private sectors to develop tourism related infrastructure and services without disturbing ecology and environment and also to reduce the tourist pressure at Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim.
