Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jane Caputi for guiding me through this process. She was truly there from this paper’s incubation as it was in her Sex, Violence, and Hollywood class where the idea that James Bond could be repressing his homosexuality first revealed itself to me. She encouraged the exploration and was an unbelievable sounding board every step to fruition. Stephen Charbonneau has also been an invaluable resource. Frankly, he changed the way I look at film. His door has always been open and he has given honest feedback and good advice. Oliver Buckton possesses a knowledge of James Bond that is unparalleled. I marvel at how he retains such information.

With no acting credit to his name, the billionaire gave members of the press a taste of the 21st James Bond encounter, scheduled for release in theatres on November 17, during a sneak preview at the Half Moon Hotel, Montego Bay, St. James yesterday morning. But the marketing thrust by Sir Richard and his Virgin Atlantic team has been tagged 'James Bond Seeks Out Virgin Atlantic For Casino Royale Assignment', with the airline as a global partner and its Airbus A340-600s in an airport chase sequence. AIRPORT SEQUENCE Sir Richard, who was cagey about the small part he plays in the movie, will reportedly appear during a check-in series at Miami Airport, one of the airline's 27 destinations. The airport sequence also includes members of Virgin Atlantic's cabin crew. "The producers didn't want a dated airline in the film," Sir Richard quipped while addressing the gathering. • The Vesper Martini
The Vesper Martini "A dry martini," [Bond] said. "One. In a deep champagne goblet." "Oui, monsieur." "Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well, until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?" "Certainly, monsieur." The barman seemed pleased with the idea. "Gosh, that's certainly a drink," said Leiter. Bond laughed. "When I'm...er...concentrating," he explained, "I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad. This drink's my own invention. I'm going to patent it when I can think of a good name." —Ian Fleming, Casino Royale (1953), Chapter 7, "Rouge et Noir” Bond further comments to the barman, after taking a long sip, "Excellent ... but if you can get a vodka made with grain instead of potatoes, you will find it still better," and then he adds in an aside, "Mais n'enculons pas des mouches" (“But let's not bugger flies”—a vulgar French expression meaning "let's not split hairs"). One of the reasons Bond wanted his Vesper shaken well is that potato-based vodka is oily, and the ice agitation is thought to somehow remove much of the oiliness. But, of course, the only martini worth drinking is one with a thin skim of ice on the surface, which is only attainable with vigorous shaking.

  • Camera Stylo 2019 Inside Final 9
Royale, No Cheese: Rescuing Bond from Self-Parody SOFIA DORRELL Sofa Dorrell is a fourth year cinema studies specialist, passionate about flm history, psychology, and popular culture in media. 6 6 As a reboot both informed and complicated by conventions and contrivances formulated in the past, Casino Royale1 expresses modern anxieties of the war on terror. Casino Royale also exalts the Bond-girl to the status of the Bond-woman, in the sense that she carries the weight of signifying Bond’s relationship to women in what is, in effect, his origin story. Vesper Lynd survives the majority of the film so that in her death, she may teach Bond the ways of the gendered world exterior to his MI6 training. In the interest of staying relevant in this renewal and revision of the Bond film franchise, Casino Royale recalls elements of Dr. No2, Die Another Day3, From Russia With Love,4 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,5 Spectre,6 and Goldfinger.7 Daniel Craig’s Bond certainly bears many of the features of the spy that we know, but he is not the lighthearted and parodic trope we have come to love. Created in an entirely new geopolitical climate, Casino Royale has a plethora of new material to work with. Casino Royale was created in a geopolitical climate that differs from the Cold War ethos from which the Ian Fleming novels and the initial James Bond films originated. Heightened anxieties surrounding international travel, movement, and dissemination of information becomes allegorized in the form of a poker game between international millionaires, symbolizing Le Chiffre’s casino economy scheme.

  • Restorative Fiction in the Postwar Rebuilding of Britain: Ian Fleming's
Volume 13 Issue 1 – 2019 Restorative Fiction in the Postwar Rebuilding of Britain: Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale and Dr. No Kerry Henderson Western Sydney University Abstract After World War II, Great Britain experienced significant expansion following the devastation of war. Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels were popular during this time and I argue that they had a restorative effect in helping post-war Britons rebuild their nation and look towards a future that included many of the things that had been lost or destroyed by the war. This article defines and explains the concept of restorative fiction and applies it to Fleming’s novels Casino Royale (1953) and Dr No (1958). It compares Casino Royale and Dr. No with the so- called ‘kitchen sink’ dramas that were also popular, but which presented a less gritty, hopeless view of post-war Britain. While history tells us that Britain did not regain its position as a world power, the paper argues that Fleming’s novels helped Britons re-imagine that world and work towards its reconstruction. Introduction The long decade between 1953-1964 in which Ian Fleming wrote his James Bond novels, was for Britain a time of expansion, discovery, social change and rebuilding. The nation’s citizens again needed to work together and see themselves thriving in a democratic new world in which Britain regained some of its lost political, economic and military power. Literature was one important vehicle in establishing how Britons imagined themselves and their nation and helped create the post-war British identity. 1 In the aftermath of the war, Britons needed to re-create a strong nation with strong internal relationships that would allow them to collectively move forward.
