In commemoration, a synagogue designed in the shape of a book will be inaugurated on the same site in 2021. When opened, the book building’s inner space and its furnishings unfold. This impressive movable structure was designed by Manuel Herz, whose studio runs offices in Basel and Cologne. This book for the first time shows the Babyn Yar synagogue captured in pho- tographs by celebrated architectural photographer Iwan Baan, A history of the Jewish concept of space: as well as through plans and model photos. - territorial: home, real as well as mythical Yet the core part of the book tells the story of the Jewish peo- - architectural: temple, synagogue, residence ple and of Judaism through the medium of space: the Jewish concept of space from biblical times to the present. Verify in Field is Höweler + Yoon’s second book. Its title derives from a notational conven- tion on architectural drawings to indicate that the information is subject to unknown conditions in the field. The book highlights verification as an integral part of the design process and demon- strates it as a productive tool to test ideas and act on the world.

Either a designer directs an outcome and creates a product, or a solution is derived from a process involving the people and circumstances of the problem. The first way is object focused and is celebrated in architectural criticism and journalism. It is the way of the salvational Genius, whose personal insight pierces all preconceptions and launches into innovation. This operational model is called the architectural canon. The second way, working through a process, is how the rest of us grapple with any issue. The power of Christopher Alexander's life is not about the distillation of a personal perspective (the profession's stereotypical Genius model) but his vital focus is on the second way a design is created. Alexander is a polymath, open to a process using human criteria and universal opportunities that can discern and convey the way to create. His life efforts show the future of the practice of architecture in a world soon overwhelmed by technology.

  • “Jewish Building” in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic After the Holocaust
arts Article “Jewish Building” in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic after the Holocaust. Possibilities, Limits, Spaces Alexandra Klei IGDJ Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden, 20144 Hamburg, Germany; [email protected] Received: 12 December 2019; Accepted: 8 March 2020; Published: 12 March 2020 Abstract: As early as the first months after the Second World War had ended, newly founded Jewish communities were beginning to form in Germany. These communities were established further in the years to follow, in the course of which new synagogues and community centers were erected. In today’s perceptions, these building projects are often seen in the context of the efforts of gentile society to make reparations (Wiedergutmachung). This article examines the possibilities and conditions under which non-Jewish post-Nazi society was operating in regard to enabling “Jewish building (Jüdisches Bauen)”, and highlights the tremendous influence that political action has had on the projects of the Jewish communities. The synagogue projects in Mannheim and Würzburg are used as examples to illustrate this issue as it reflects in the Federal Republic of Germany. This article brings forth, for the first time, a description of the situation in the German Democratic Republic providing an overview on the extent of the construction activity. Subsequently, observations over the use of the term and the concept of “Jewish building (Jüdisches Bauen)” are outlined. Keywords: synagogues; post-war Germany; FDR; GDR; Mannheim; Würzburg; Dresden; Erfurt; Leipzig; Berlin Anyone who went to buy bread rolls as a Jew in 1961, took the tram or had to deal with an administrative office, was very likely to face a former SS man, a Wehrmacht soldier involved in ‘partisan combat’ and a deportation or former civil servant who had legalized Aryanizations and was now the neighborhood baker, the conductor or the counselor.

Departing from the academic convention of presenting knowledge in the form of straightforward talks or presentations, this project will feature a series of roundtable discussions, debates and interventions of varying duration, with an integrated online presence. These events reveal an array of understanding about the consequences and implications of "spatial practice" today, with presentations by distinguished artists, architects, theorists, and curators whose work explores urban zones, state borders, enclaves, and extra- territorial sites throughout the world. A Talk on Architecture in Photography Images From Valerio Olgiati Personal Archive And Photographs By Bas Princen by Pedro Leão Neto As editor of scopio Editions it is a great honour to be writing this closing text about the present book which communicates our last Duelo/Dueto session of Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) series that had as invited authors Valerio Olgiati and Bas Princen. I will start by talking about the book as a privileged medium for Architecture, Art and Image and then go on focusing on this book in particular and its authors. This conference series had from the start planned a publication for each session with the contribution of the invited speakers and the organization because we believe that the physical book, without prejudice towards the potential of digital publications, is still a tool of paramount importance for preserving and building knowledge, not just for students and academics, but also for all professionals and non-scholars. The physical book somehow allows the understanding of what was discussed and debated in Duelo/Dueto sessions in a different manner, encouraging and giving the right time to each 96 viewer for a deeper thinking. The reading of these sessions also means that these events of rich exchange of ideas and personal experience between significant authors coming from AAI universe are preserved for future studies.

Many churches, for instance, are in the process of reuse, closure, or even demolition. At the same time, there has been an increase in the construction of new mosques and a reorientation in synagogue architecture in Germany for the last twenty-five years. The three religious traditions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—undergo remarkable transformations with regard to the design and style of their places of worship. Often, however, these new designs are not easily ‘readable’ to visitors and believers alike. In addition, the role of contemporary religious architecture in its relation to urban space is changing. Which meanings do religious buildings convey, how are they positioned, and how do they structure urban space? In collaboration of the study of religions and architectural history, we approach these questions by means of studying the transformations of contemporary religious architecture in Germany in a comparative manner.

Historically it served as the city’s secular centre, hosting the town hall and the marketplace. It is located at the bottom of the river valley, at the foot of the cathedral’s hill crowned by Münsterplatz, the ecclesiastical centre of the city. PROJECT Still holding a strategic role in the city, the Marktplatz is a place of high activity, used by a very diverse group of people – passers-by strolling around, tourists, shoppers and politicians on their way to the town hall. These users cross each other but hardly ever meet or interact. The project focuses on this aspect. It is about creating spaces where this kind of togetherness can evolve further to interaction.
