The hoods are a carry-over from the times when monks, who operated these universities, wore them to protect their shaved heads in winter. The robe is an adaptation of the shoulder cape also worn by these same monks while collecting alms. Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of what is now Columbia University. In 1895, a commission of University officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. This code has undergone several revisions in subsequent years. Styling of the robes varies for the bachelor's and master's degrees with the width of sleeve borders and length of the hood increasing with each advanced degree. Hoods are normally not used for bachelor's degrees today. Instead, the tassel colors are used to indicate the degree program. The program is an outgrowth of the Arts and Sciences Honors program and was initiated in 1978. It is governed through the office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and administered through the Honors Coordinator. UNO which implement honors programs include Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts and Public Affairs and Community Service. As part of their Honors Program requirements, students undertake a research project that results in a Senior Honors Thesis. Students and their theses topics are listed at the end of the list of graduates. Students who have been designated in this booklet as Honors Program students have fulfilled the academic requirements of this program. HUBERT G. LOCKE A native of Detroit, Hubert G. Locke served the University of Nebraska at Omaha during the mid-1970s as professor of Urban Studies and founding dean of the School of Public Affairs and Community Service, currently the College of Public Affairs and Community Service. Mr. Locke has been cited as an innovator and as a dynamic person who reacted positively and swiftly to the educational needs of this metropolitan area. Examples of this innovation during his tenure at UNO include the development of a European Division through the School of Public Affairs and Community Service to meet the demands of the American military, extensive involvement in the Headstart Program for children, and the development of scholarship and recruitment of minority students and faculty. His crowning achievement, however, may have been the development of the nationally recognized Goodrich Program, an initiative to help economically disadvantaged students. In addition to the demands of community service, Mr. Locke strongly encouraged his faculty to excel in research and teaching. He is well published, having edited and authored several books and professional articles. He also has written book reviews for the New York Times, Journal of Criminology and Policy Sciences and Journal of Urban Law. In addition, Mr. Locke has presented several papers and has delivered several addresses. Immediately prior to coming to UNO, he was a faculty member and researcher at Wayne State University (Detroit) and in 1971 served on the University of Nebraska Regents Commission on the urban university. In addition to his appointments at Wayne State University, Mr. Locke served the Detroit community in various administrative positions. Mr. Locke's educational background includes a master of arts in comparative literature from the University of Michigan, a bachelor of arts degree from Wayne State University in Latin and Greek and a bachelor of divinity in New Testament Studies from the University of Chicago, Chicago Theological Seminary. He currently serves on several boards of directors for organizations in the Seattle area and has received numerous honors and awards. He continues his educational contribution to society at the University of Washington as director of Society and Justice Program and professor of the Graduate Schools of Public Affairs. For all of his contributions to the University of Nebraska at Omaha and to education, it is with great pride that Hubert G. Locke is awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters degree. HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Pacesetter scholars have been class leaders, student government presidents and the leaders of numerous student social and service organizations. They continue to shape the University through active participation. In addition to his own corporation, Mr. Schrager has served or is presently serving on the board of directors for Goodwill Industries; Bellevue College; Jewish Federation of Omaha; Temple Israel, Omaha; Opera Omaha; Highland Country Club; Boys' Clubs of Omaha and the University of Nebraska Foundation. Mr. Schrager also offers his counsel to various organizations including the Chancellor's Club, University of Nebraska at Omaha; President's Council, Omaha Symphony; Acquisition Committee, Joslyn Art Museum; General Chairman of the Capital Building Campaign, Beth El Synagogue; and CHAD. Mr. Schrager has made a significant impact on the world of modern art appreciation through his internationally known and recognized collection. It is reputed to be one of the finest collections of its kind held by a private individual. His support of the arts is legendary in the community, state and region. Through his patronage, he has supported the work of many new and established artists who have become internationally famous and who will take a historical place in the modern art movement. For all of Mr. Schrager's contributions to the University of Nebraska at Omaha, scholarship and to the arts, it is with great pleasure and respect that Phillip G. Schrager is awarded the Doctor of Letters degree. A university is not bricks and mortar, not solely bricks and mortar. It is flesh and bone, dreams and reality, promise and fulfillment. Its totality is too broad for canvas, too elusive for print. It has moods and ages, like a person. Its seasons are all growing seasons and the harvests ever secure.

A university is, above all, an experience. It exists in the hearts and minds of those who draw from its wisdom and add to its reputation.

A university is a place, yes, but a place of the spirit. It is described, forever after, by its family, not as architecture, but as personality and precept and conversion.

A university is what its alumni have become. They are its voice to the world.

Some alumni achieve headlines, bear titles, manage corporations, represent constituents, build, create, publicize, minister, protect, teach. Some labor less conspicuously, contributing from the depths of their talents, fostering understanding, transmitting appreciation.

They speak for us, our alumni. And they speak well.

Robert T. Reilly Professor Emeritus atUniversity Omaha of Nebraska
