Shogan Deputy Director and Senior Specialist November 26, 2012 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL30261 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Women in the United States Congress: 1917-2012 Summary Ninety-four women currently serve in the 112th Congress: 77 in the House (53 Democrats and 24 Republicans) and 17 in the Senate (12 Democrats and 5 Republicans). Ninety-two women were initially sworn in to the 112th Congress, two women Democratic House Members have since resigned, and four others have been elected. This number (94) is lower than the record number of 95 women who were initially elected to the 111th Congress. The first woman elected to Congress was Representative Jeannette Rankin (R-MT, 1917-1919, 1941-1943). The first woman to serve in the Senate was Rebecca Latimer Felton (D-GA). She was appointed in 1922 and served for only one day. A total of 278 women have served in Congress, 178 Democrats and 100 Republicans. Of these women, 239 (153 Democrats, 86 Republicans) have served only in the House of Representatives; 31 (19 Democrats, 12 Republicans) have served only in the Senate; and 8 (6 Democrats, 2 Republicans) have served in both houses. These figures include one non-voting Delegate each from Guam, Hawaii, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Currently serving Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) holds the record for length of service by a woman in Congress with 35 years (10 of which were spent in the House).

    Retired United States Congressmen from the State of Michigan Submitted by Joshua Koss To The Honors College Oakland University In partial fulfillment of the requirement to graduate from The Honors College 1 Abstract Conventional wisdom in the study of members of Congress, pioneered by Richard Fenno, argues that one of the chief goals of elected officials is their reelection. However, this theory does not account for those who willingly retire from Congress. Who are these former members and what activities do they pursue once they leave office? To answer the first question, this project analyzes data on retired members of Congress from the state of Michigan regarding the years they served, party identification, and their age of retirement. The second and perhaps more interesting question in this research, examines the post-congressional careers of former members of Congress and whether their new line of work has any connections with their time in Congress through committee assignments and issue advocacy. In addition to quantitative analysis of the attributes of former members and their post-congressional careers, a qualitative analysis is conducted through a comparative case study of retired Senator Donald Riegle and former Representative Mike Rogers. This aspect of the study more closely examines their respective career paths through congress and post-congressional vocations. 2 Introduction In 1974, Democratic Congresswoman Martha Griffiths announced her retirement from the House of Representatives citing her age, 62, as a key motivation for the decision. After this, Griffiths would serve two terms as Michigan Lieutenant Governor before being dropped off the ticket, at the age of 78, due to concerns about her age, a claim she deemed “ridiculous” (“Griffiths, Martha Wright”).

Proven Results RECORD-SETTING PRIMARY ELECTIONS A record number of voters participated in Michigan’s primary election on Aug. 4, with more than 2.5 million people casting a vote either in person or by absentee ballot. One of the most followed races in the primary was the 13th Congressional District rematch between U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones. Jones represented the district for a few weeks in 2018, following the resignation of Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) in December 2017. After his resignation, there were two elections for the seat with Jones winning the special election to complete Conyers unexpired term, and Tlaib winning the regular race for the Congressional seat. This year, Tlaib and Jones were the only primary candidates. On Tuesday, Tlaib won the strongly Democratic district with nearly twice as many votes as Jones, potentially guaranteeing her a second term. In the 3rd Congressional District in West Michigan, Republican Peter Meijer, a U.S. Army veteran whose family founded the well-known Meijer retail chain, won a five-way contest with more than 50 percent of the vote, including holding a strong lead over his main opponent Rep. Lynn Afendoulis. Meijer will face Democratic attorney Hillary Scholten. The winner of that race will succeed U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican turned Libertarian who is not seeking reelection. Declaration of Independence One of the most important duties of an American citizen is casting a ballot in an election. This November, Michigan’s citizens will be voting to select the fifteen representatives and one senator who will be responsible for making sure the voices of the people of Michigan are heard in the United States Congress. In order to help the voters of Michigan make an informed choice about their representation in Washington, D.C., the Michigan Catholic Conference has solicited the positions of the thirty Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. House and Senate on a variety of issues. We are pleased to make their answers available to you. Questionnaires were sent to the congressional and senate candidates from the major parties in early September 2002. Levin secure against any Republican in 2014 Raleigh, N.C. – PPP's latest Michigan poll finds Democratic Senator Carl Levin sitting pretty with a net +11 point approval rating 46/35. While that number is very solid; Junior Senator Debbie Stabenow has even higher approval: 55/36. Relatively prominent Republicans in the State had poor name recognition among voters. U.S. Reps Justin Amash and Mike Rogers were seen as more unfavorable than favorable, 11/17 and 17/18 respectively. In both cases, over 65% of respondents had no opinion either way, which suggests familiarity is the issue, not necessarily favorability. Rep Candice Miller was the only Republican polled to receive a net positive favorability 34/23. Only 15% of voters knew State Sen. Roger Kahn well enough to have an opinion about him. State Attorney General Bill Schuette has a slight disapproval of 18/22, with 60% not sure. In hypothetical head-to-heads for the 2014 Senate seat, Carl Levin dominated against any potential Republican opponent. Poor name recognition is a clear factor: Candice Miller had the highest name recognition of all the Republicans polled; and she fared the best against Levin, 52/34. Amash performed second-best, 53/32. Kahn and Schuette each trail Levin by 22 points, 53/31 and 54/32 respectively. Rogers performed the worst-55/31. Michigan voters approve of the job President Obama is doing 53/44.
