High school students across the country have been forbidden to start Gay and Straight Alliance clubs. The school picture event mentioned in this play really did happen to a child in Florida. Families across the country are being shunned, harassed and threatened by neighbors, and they suffer for allowing their transgender children to freely express their identities. -

Criminal Minds
February 2020 #82 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Broadcast Has Some Great TV Series Too By Steve Sternberg In December, I released my analysis of the 27 best TV series of 2019. In alphabetical order – Barry, Big Little Lies, Bosch, The Boys, Dead to Me, Fleabag, GLOW, Goliath, The Good Fight, The Good Place, Harlots, Jessica Jones, Killing Eve, The Kominsky Method, Mindhunter, The Morning Show, Mr Inbetween, Pose, Queen of the South, Rick & Morty, Russian Doll, Sneaky Pete, Star Trek: Discovery, Succession, This is Us, Vida, and Watchmen. As was the case with the Emmys, The Golden Globes, and virtually every TV critic, I demonstrated a clear bias against broadcast network series. Of my 27 best TV series, 15 are on streaming services, 5 are on premium cable, 5 are on ad-supported cable, and only 2 were on broadcast TV. There are, of course, some logical reasons for this. • Broadcast series have to answer to advertisers (and the FCC), so have limitations regarding language and sexual content that do not hinder cable or streaming services. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message Reach thousands of highly engaged media and advertising decision makers. Contact [email protected] for details about advertising here. The Sternberg Report ©2020 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ • While cable and streaming series generally have between 6 and 13 episodes per season, broadcast series typically have between 17 and 24 episodes (although a few this season have 13). It’s difficult to write that many good episodes in a season, so it requires a lot more “filler.” • More broadcast dramas have self-contained episodes, as opposed to season-long story arcs, which are more prevalent on cable and streaming series. -

2018 Letter to Shareholders
January 17, 2019 Fellow shareholders, We grew annual revenue 35% to $16 billion in 2018, and nearly doubled operating profits to $1.6 billion. Fueling this growth was our high member satisfaction, which propelled us to finish 2018 with 139 million paying memberships, up 9 million from quarter start and up 29 million from the beginning of the year. Q4 Results and Q1 Forecast Average paid memberships and ASP rose 26% and 3% year over year, respectively. Excluding the impact of F/X, international ASP increased 6% year over year and 1% sequentially. Foreign exchange headwinds continued to move against us in the quarter, similar to the trend we saw in Q3’18. As expected, Q4 operating margin dipped to 5.2% vs. 7.5% prior year due to so many titles launching in the quarter. Our full year 2018 operating margin of 10% was in-line with our target. EPS of $0.30 vs. $0.41 included a $22 million non-cash unrealized gain from F/X remeasurement on our Euro denominated debt. We added a record 8.8m paid memberships (1.5m in the US and 7.3m internationally), higher than our beginning-of-quarter expectation for 7.6m paid net adds and up 33% year over year. For the full year, paid net adds grew 33% to 29m vs. the 22m we added in 2017. 1 As discussed in our last letter, we reclassified certain personnel costs from G&A to Cost of Revenues and Marketing, and from Technology & Development to Other Cost of Revenues. This change has no impact on operating profit or margin or total operating expenses and historical quarterly pro forma financial statements for 2016-2018 can be found here. -
From the Artistic Directors
From the Artistic Directors As the weather cools down, the Fountain stays hot. For the second consecutive year, the Fountain Theatre is offering you the Los Angeles Premiere of a recent Pulitzer Prize winning play. Last season, we proudly produced the second production of Martyna Majok’s poignant Cost of Living, following the New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club. We are thrilled to now share Stephen Adly Guirgis’ funny and powerful Between Riverside and Crazy. These back-to-back prize winners demonstrate how the Fountain aims to always provide you with theatre of the highest quality on our intimate stage. Stephen Adly Guirgis is widely considered to be one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged from New York theater in decades. This acclaimed and award-winning playwright humbly admits, “A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. But it’s going to create a community to perform it, and it’s going to be performed for a community, and when those communities are spicy, when there’s different ingredients in the pot, that, to me, is the most beautiful thing.” In Guirgis’ delightful new play, a fiery group of misfits and outcasts discover how to become a family in a cavernous rent-controlled apartment on Riverside Drive. No matter how down and out his characters are, or how challenging their circumstances, they have faith in the possibility of grace and redemption. Guirgis writes with such humor and truth and humanity, it permeates all aspects of this marvelous play.
