Mission Statement

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 4 Presidents Report Michael Owen

To start my report for the 2017/18 season, most importantly, I would like to congratulate our members on achieving another season with no major incidents on our beach. It is no mean feat to achieve this and whilst we expect it each year, hats off to all that made it possible to return such positive rescue and prevention numbers again this year.

Filling the requirements for patrols with lifesaving awards continues to be a challenge. This year we tried a number of new initiatives with patrols, some worked well, while others will be adjusted, for the coming season. There is still no higher priority than the protection of the public that swim at our beach. It is not said anywhere near enough, but we are all so proud of the efforts put in by our patrol members to maintain this level of public faith, trust and safety. A number of members continued to complete well above the required patrol hours. Congratulations to David “Kodak” Owen who coordinated patrols as our Club Captain and all those who continue to complete rostered patrols, voluntary patrols and water safety.

In the area of lifesaving awards, our members were well supported by Clint Joseph (Chief Instructor), our Club Assessors and Patrol Captains. A number of opportunities were presented to members to train for and achieve awards. Our members need to continue updating and adding to their skills. Gaining awards is an opportunity that allows us to develop our lifesaving skills.

Nipper States - five in a row! The Warrnambool SLSC should be proud of this effort and know, that as a club we can put on a quality event that showcases lifesaving to the community. With some better weather, no seaweed and the beach in pristine condition the states did not disappoint.

Thanks to all our club members who assisted with the many tasks we took on in our role as the host club. Alan Aulesbrook, Martin O’Brien and Matt Wood worked tirelessly in the coordination of the event for the club and showed everyone what we can do as a club. Special thanks must go to those people who coordinated club fundraisers during the weekend, Warrnambool Lions Club (food tent), John Watson (coffee) and Board and Ski Competitors (cheese toasties) and John McNeil (Duck Derby). Once again, these projects resulted in funds for lifesaving equipment and projects. Thanks to every club member who gave time and effort to this event. The Warrnambool City Council continued their great support of the event with promotion, assistance during the weekend and worked on the beach to present it in the best possible condition. We look forward to next year when we host the senior states for the first time in a number of years (1984 is the last one I can remember).

At the club level, we have had another great year in our Junior Activities section. Thanks to John Cook who coordinated the Nipper section. The Nipper Sub Committee was a fantastic group who took on the task of overseeing the largest section of our club. The team have worked incredibly hard to make it a standout season for all the young members and their families. During the past five years our nipper activities and numbers have expanded to become very popular in the Warrnambool community.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 5 Nippers has become much more than the traditional Sunday morning sessions. Comp Squad Training, Water Safety, Thursday night teas, apparel, carnival entries, memberships and equipment upgrades and more. A big group of parents jumped in to assist and make it a great season for our nippers. The involvement of more parents lightened the load and there are plans in place to extend this further next season. A wonderful function was held at the conclusion to the Nipper States in March where Nipper families had a chance to gather, reminisce and celebrate where we have been and where we will go in the future.

As a club we continue to provide an opportunity for anyone who wishes to compete in any area of life saving competition. This season saw a continued increase in board and ski based events. It is a great testament to the work Stephen Kerr and the senior paddlers, who put a huge amount of time and effort into this area that continues to produce strong levels of participation, state champions and results at all levels of competition.

One area that took a big leap forward this year was our junior ski paddling with success at State and National level. I look forward to seeing further development next year and encourage our members to get involved. A big thanks to Ben Johnson, Mark Owen and Peter Day for their efforts with this group. Training and support at carnivals was outstanding.

Thanks, must also go to Martin O’Brien, Stephen Kerr and Dean Kilpatrick who coordinated the Competition area for the club. Entries, carnival officials and the logistics around competition are often challenging and time consuming. A full wrap up of the results will be included in other sections of this report.

A huge amount of work occurred in the administration area of the club. Club Secretary, Michael Artz, together with the support of Nicole Wood as club administrator, worked throughout the season to ensure the club is at the very top of the tree in meeting the administration requirements to be a successful club. As the years go by, this is becoming a more demanding area within the club. I thank our members who completed administration requirements across all areas. These members work behind the scenes to ensure we have the details in place to continue to meet the expectations of our members in how we administer our club.

Under the guidance of Anthony Cook as Treasurer, the clubs finances remain in a sound position. Once again, the club has been successful in obtaining several grants for equipment, building and skill development. Thanks to the number of members who have applied for grants on the club's behalf. A full financial report for the season is included in this report.

We continued to make improvements to the club building, with, the upgrade to the boat storage area, further upgrades to our honour boards and a planned replacement of a number of roller doors. Gary Askew has again been the responsible for coordinating building works and delivers great results as our OHS officer. Kevin “Skeeta” McMahon has completed his fifth year as our onsite caretaker, cleaning, maintaining and helping to improve our premises as well as the areas immediately adjacent. Thanks, Skeeta.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 6 As a member of the Warrnambool SLSC I continue to see a number of members, from Nippers to the Board of Management, put in many hours to ensure the smooth running of the club. On a personal level, I would like to thank John McNeil and Michael Artz who have completed the bulk of the behind the scenes work on a range of projects from requests from myself, members, LSV and the public. The number of hours you have put in is amazing.

Thank you to everyone who is involved in our club during the past five years that I have been President. It is only through your involvement that we can continue the great work we do and strive to become an even better club in the future. My thanks to those who have contributed to this annual report as it is a wonderful snapshot of our season that will live on in our club’s history. I look forward to the fresh start a new season will bring and the opportunity for us to continue to provide a great service within our community.

Michael Owen President WSLSC

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 7 Vice President’s Report John McNeil

It's been a very successful season for the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club, and I would like to thank all members for their efforts with the smooth running of the club.

The nippers has been excellent throughout the season and to John Cook, Leigh Moncrief and all the helpers your work does not go unnoticed. To Sharon and Andrew who ran the BBQ on Sunday mornings, there's nothing better than coming off the beach to the smell of hot food. I thank you for your tireless work and I also thank all the volunteers who assisted in the BBQ.

To Anna Carroll, Sarah Moncrief and Zoe Stevens in apparel, thanks for your marvelous work in making all members look their best on the beach and represent the club at the same time.

To Anthony and Ange Cook, Michael Artz and Nicole Wood, you guys have taken the club to a new level with your efficient admin. Thankyou.

I was really happy with the support of the duck derby at the nipper titles, and the money raised was close to $5000.

Thanks also to Steve Philpott from Hotel Warrnambool for your endless support throughout the year. Also, to Paul McNamara from surfside holiday park for allowing us to run the annual tin rattle. These efforts to fundraise are invaluable for the club as it allows the club to upgrade equipment.

To John and Mez Watson, our friends at Warrnambool Rotary, and to all who helped over the nipper long weekend thank you.

The competition squads have had great success throughout the season. Thanks to Steve Kerr, Martin O'Brien, Leigh Moncrief, Mark Owen and Ben Johnson for guiding the senior and junior squads. To all members who towed trailers and gear all over Australia, thank you.

Congratulations to Club Captain David Owen and chief instructor Clint Joseph on another stellar year in life saving and training. It has been a pleasure being involved in the board of management.

Lastly, I would to thank outgoing president Michael Owen for 5 successful years. John McNeil

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 8 Club Captain’s Report David Owen

This season we trailed a new roster model where patrol groups did one weekend only, throughout the whole season. It is fair to say not all members felt it was suited to their ideal of club volunteerism. It requires a large commitment to give up over 15 hours, but this is the primary function of the surf club, to keep people as safe as possible for as many hours as possible.

This was the busiest season for many years with a 10% increase from the previous year in visitors staying in the adjoining caravan parks and much more suitable beach weather. Our club entered 19,180 total beach attendances over the patrol period.

I would like to thank everyone for their support this season.

Special thanks to Michael Artz, Michael Owen and John McNeil for assisting me with the roster and filling the gaps when l was on leave. A big thank you to the sixteen Patrol Captains; Marli Blackney- Noter, Dean Kilpatrick, Rob Dart, Jane McMeel, Toby Webb, John McNeil, Clint Joseph, Glenistair Hancock, Lars Ralf, John Cook, John Whitson, Jason Dart, Josephine McDowall, Chris Sharam and Bob Collins, who managed our beach for the season. Patrol Captains have one of the most responsible roles in the club and must lead by example and demonstrate leadership with their patrol teams. Consistency, awareness, communication and a level head are the most important aspects of being a patrol captain. Thank you again to the volunteers within each patrol team, who volunteered on the beach, week after week.

This season most of our members showed continued dedication, having completed close to 2,457 patrolling hours but alarmingly 610 hours were no shows. I’d like to emphasize how important it is to the surf club and the safety of beach goers that volunteers commit to their assigned hours and to find replacements when they cannot.

There were 668 preventative actions and nine rescues; eight on rescue boards and one on the IRB. The season’s statistics are enclosed within this annual report. The standard at which members patrolled this year was again excellent.

The Victorian Nipper Championships were held in Warrnambool this year for the fifth time however next year it will move to Lorne. It’s likely we will host the senior carnival over the long weekend in March, next year. l would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers for getting behind the Victorian Nipper Championships. It was a very successful event and I’d like to extend a special thank you to Warrnambool Lions Club for fund raising and cooking. They did an awesome job.

A very special thank you to the two patrols over this weekend and the amazing amount of work the life members contributed. Without them this event would not have been possible.

Also, a special thank you to Matt Wood and the nipper coordinators. The nipper program is without a doubt the strength of this club, not only for providing water safety and building community but more importantly for the health and wellbeing of our youngest members. This would not be possible

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 9 without the input of Sara and Leigh Moncrieff, John McNeil, Jacinta Roache, John Cook and of course Rohan Keert who worked very hard early in the season.

Congratulations again to Steven Kerr for his contribution to the development of club members in preparation for competition.

Congratulations to Lifesaver of the Year 2017-2018, Josephine McDowall, for her huge commitment to the club. Thank you, Jo, for the hard work.

Thanks again to all our club members for their ongoing commitment to our community and for making this such a wonderful club.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 10 Treasurer’s Report Anthony Cook

It is pleasing to report that the club’s financial position remains sound and has been further strengthened during the year with net income of $76, 378 and a net increase in cash held of $91,324. Full details are included in the Financial Statements.

In 2018 we were required to prepare the financial statements on an accrual basis, rather than a cash basis for the first time. As such the 2017 comparative information is disclosed on a cash basis. Transition to the preparation of the financial statements on an accrual based will provide a more accurate financial picture year on year. An online accounting system was implemented during the year that will enable accrual-based reporting to be done efficiently. Further the online accounting system allows for increased visibility with all supporting documentation stored on line and gives flexibility to the administrators to take care of club matters remotely.

A huge thank you to Ange (Cook), who has done a significant amount of work behind the scenes supporting not only myself but also in many other areas of the club's activities. In addition to keeping on top of the day to day financial activities of the club, providing accounting advice and support and GST return preparation and submission, she was instrumental in the implementation of the on-line accounting system mentioned above and teaching me how to use it!

Thanks also to Nicole Wood for all of her assistance during the year and willingness to be available at any time, and Michael Artz in not only managing the secretarial and administrative aspects of the club but also in driving the implementation of the online accounting system that will be of great benefit to the club going forward.

Finally, on behalf of the Board of Management, thanks to Chris Kol from McLaren Hunt for completing the Audit.

Attached to this booklet contains the Audited Financial Statements for the Financial Year ending 31st March 2018.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 11 Secretary’s Report Michael Artz In reflection we have achieved quite a lot this year, although (once again) much of it has been "back room" achievements. I hope in this report to give our members some insight into those achievements, whilst not as glamorous as our continuing outstanding sports achievements I am equally proud.

We have successfully applied and (acquitted) several grants once again this year and are just about to submit a further grant once the new committee sits in June. Dan Tehan approached and awarded us the Commonwealth Communities grant, which has been used to purchase a laptop for the Patrol tower, refit the Patrol Tower (just a little) and help make some minor updates to the showers. The other major grant awarded was from the Deputy Premier, James Merlino and the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP). An interesting off shoot of the above encounters has been the encouragement for the club to look at our club rooms and consider a more substantial upgrade/reconfiguration. The Board will be forming a Sub-committee this year to further explore this.

Junior Sub Committee The club re-established the Junior Sub-Committee (JSC) this year, personally I'd like to thank Rohan Keert for his invaluable help pre-season in establishing this, secondly to the room full of minds that helped us hatch the idea and finally to the members of this year's committee who have worked tirelessly not only to ensure our nipper program covers all areas of concern, considering the ever- increasing requirements are being not only fulfilled but exceeded, but also working on the structure of this committee and recording the roles it will fulfill. Please read John's report to see just how much "structure" has been brought to this area this year.

The JSC is now in a reflective stage and will identify how the roles established this year will evolve prior to the upcoming season. One thing that has come from this exercise is tremendous respect for Dean's achievements these past few years "flying solo"!

LSV We were fortunate to enjoy an improved relationship with LSV this year, ensuring that the March Junior Carnival was the most successful to date by any measure, we were also fortunate to participate in a trial of the new Officials course, which will help us tremendously in fulfilling our carnival obligations (a side effect of us continuing to present strong numbers at every carnival).

The registration process continues to baffle people and we are continually seeking ways to make this easier for people, especially those new to Life Saving.

Patrols We have begun discussions/planning around the patrol area of our club, something I would like to name "operations" to encompass patrols and everything that goes around ensuring this primary obligation is not only fulfilled as priority but is considered a priority across everything we do. The JSC have been very receptive to this "mind set" and will certainly be a larger part of our Nipper offering moving forward, already some great initiatives being discussed at both the nipper level and in the preliminary Patrol discussion group.

A central part of this will be your patrol commitment to the club being communicated clearly at requal this coming season.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 12

Nerdy Stuff Our club's electronic archives are now completely backed up (and resident) in "the cloud", important documents can be accessed (securely) from any computer which creates a significant time saving on our volunteers (mostly me) not having to "attend" the club-rooms. We also successfully moved the accounting software to an online provider, taking substantial time burden off (both) our treasurer(s). Similarly, financial reports or questions can be answered from anywhere with phone reception.

The year ahead (presuming I am reinstated) would see me concentrating on patrols and patrol captains, better defining our expectations of them and our general (Bronze) membership. Continuing to archive the historical photographs you see dotted through this report and striving to ensure social events reach the eyes (and are deemed worth attending) to the broader membership. We have a brilliant facility in our club rooms that should be utilised to its full potential by the members. So, if you've got an idea, pass it on and let's do it!

Reflection - Really, I mean to say THANKS!

Whilst the BOM are no doubt sick of my constant emails I appreciate that they refrain from outright abusing me (mostly). Thank you to the BOM who each work harder than anyone can possibly imagine behind the scenes not just "doing the job" but really pushing at every opportunity the club gets to improve and expand it's offering to the .

Thank you to Nicole for putting up with my haphazard and spaghetti brained thought processes.

Thank you to Clint Joseph who has not just managed to get through an "annus horriblis" this year in Training, but I think we have ironed out some processes to make this area of the club more efficient and less demanding for forth coming Directors of Training. I know that despite looking to "pass the baton" on this portfolio he will remain close to the BOM and those filling his shoes. Similarly, we farewell Mick Owen from his tenure as President and (so it appears) welcome Justin Houlihan back to the BOM. I hope to see Mick using his new-found time to be back competing and thank him for his help and guidance in helping me fulfil my own role and congratulate him on a wonderful presidency.

I feel these are exciting times for WSLSC and look forward to what I get to inform you about next year! Hopefully we see everyone more often and there's less to tell!

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 13 Surf Sports Report Martin O’Brien

Competition We had a total of 59 Senior members compete across 8 carnivals

Age groups: U/14 x 9 U/15 x 13 U/17 x 16 Open x 13 Masters x 8 (inc 5 boaties)

Carnival Entries Dec 12 Torquay 27 Dec 16 & 17 (Ocean 6) 12 Jan 7 Anglesea 42 Jan 14 Fairhaven (Ocean 6) 22 Feb 3 & 4 Lorne (includes 8 Masters) 52 (includes boat crew) Feb 24 & 25 Cronulla (Ocean 6) 10 March 24 & 25 (States) 49 (includes boat crew) April 12-22 (Aussies) 17 (includes masters)

John Dodds Event Second year running the event using the different course (Rail trail – Pavilion). We had a total of 35 competitors which is up on previous year with additional numbers in the teams' section. Popular event and there’s scope to further build the numbers doing this event.

Individual Handicap winner was Stella Bridgewater Winning team was Darren Shields, Neil Holland, Jace Nepean & Paul Forbes

Club Championships - Seniors Had 27 competitors which was slightly up on previous year.

Made a change to the timing when this event was run to a Friday evening in an effort to get more competitors and as means to make this more of a club event. Intention good but realistically the timing probably wasn’t ideal and meant that a few of the more active senior members weren’t able to attend due to work commitments. Suggestion moving forward would be to hold on a Saturday afternoon (4 pm?) and then follow with a club social event afterwards. Also would enable the nippers club championships to be run in the morning so we have one club championships day – i.e. it then becomes a whole club event.

Open Male: 1st Brayden Casamento 2nd Declan Hoffmann 3rd Harry McNamara Open Female: 1st Emma Ragg 2nd Elle 3rd Stella Bridgewater

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 14 U18 Male: 1st Brayden Casamento 2nd Declan Hoffmann 3rd Harry McNamara U18 Female: 1st Emma Ragg 2nd Elissa 3rd Stella Bridgewater Masters Male: 1st Mark Owen 2nd Ben Johnson 3rd Lenny Ob Masters Female: 1st Michelle Dow 2nd Jo McDowall

Equipment/Craft and Participants Have total of 25 boards with 14 being hired (@ $150 per season). So most board paddlers have their own board which is a big saving for the club when you consider that new boards are worth at least $1500 each.

Club has 3 single skis and 4 double skis but might need to look at purchasing a couple more single ski’s as there’s been a steady increase in numbers paddling skis thanks to the efforts of coaches Mark Owen, Peter Day and Ben Johnson.

Have 2 surf boats and second boat having a few outings on account of the introduction of a U19 team so hopefully this will see a greater usage of the surf boats in future.

Comment re. Competition Unfortunately, competition in is still at a very low ebb so as a result this year have had to counter this by taking the higher performing competitors to a few interstate carnivals to help keep them engaged. These carnivals were Ocean 6 and Freshwater/Manly events. This is a major undertaking and comes with a cost, but the group has managed to raise significant additional/separate funds to help pay for these trips and ensure that there hasn’t been any additional financial burden on the club.

Regarding the state of competition in Victoria we’re encouraged that LSV is undertaking a review into the sport and hope this signals a greater understanding of the way surf sports contributes to the functioning of many clubs and are hopeful that this might lead to a greater emphasis on and investment in surf sports in Victoria.

Thank you To Dean Kilpatrick for all the work with competition entries along with communication and organisation around carnivals. His contribution is invaluable. To our officials: Gavan Hart, Matt Wood, Jodie McNamara, Michael Artz & Dean Kilpatrick. To our Coaches: Steve Kerr (Boards), John Hart (Boards), Mark Owen, Peter Day & Ben Johnson (Skis). To all the parents that help out with training, transport, lugging gear etc etc (too many to name). To the committee for their hard work for providing an organisation through which our competitors can pursue a healthy recreational activity. To the committee for their hard work for providing an organisation through which our competitors can pursue a healthy recreational activity.

Event held > : Sat Dec 30 x 216 long swim competitors > Warrnambool: Sat Jan 6 x 189 long swim competitors (+39 on prev year) > : Sat Jan 20 x 159 long swim competitors

Entry Fee Long Swim: $35 per swim or $90 for series (x3). Short Swim: $20 per swim

Finances $6 533 profit/distribution to each club. About $1200 down on 2017 figure which is due to poor swim conditions at 2 of the events. Sponsors: AGL $5000, Breakwater Insurance $1500, PFD $1500, Pavilion $1500, Splash Factory $1000 (in kind/goggles for spot prizes).

Comments: Have problems that need addressing as per the following: - Struggle to find enough helpers for both the organising committee and to help on the day. Need to find interested people to be involved. - Problems with timing and recording system – have been using the tri-club system. Suggestion is to look at buying our own system as not that expensive. - Have just one person who knows how the registration, recording and timing system operates (John Ryan from Port Campbell) and when he’s away we’re in serious strife. Suggestion is to find someone who can coordinate this and pay them for their services. - Warrnambool swim buoys are pretty average and are difficult to set-up. Suggestion is to buy new buoys and anchors. - Dates/spread of swims needs reviewing. Suggestion is to consider having Port Fairy swim at start of January, Port Campbell in mid-January and Warrnambool in early Feb.

So in summary the swim series needs serious attention to remain viable.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 16 Competition Officer’s Report Dean Kilpatrick What another fantastic year the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club has had. Congratulations to all our competitors from juniors right through to the masters. It has been an outstanding year at State Senior Carnivals, Masters' Championships, Senior Victorian Championships, a number of Interstate Championships, Ocean 6 and Australian Surf life Saving Championships. To the committee and club members a big congratulation on running another successful Victorian Junior State Championship, these events only work if everyone gets on board.

State Senior Carnivals The senior competitors started their season in November at the Victorian Endurance Championships at Halfmoon Bay with Matt Hardiman taking out the Opens Men’s board and Sophie the Open Swim. Carnivals at Anglesea, Fairhaven and Lorne. We saw our up and coming U15 boys and girls competing at all of these carnivals with outstanding results in both teams and individual events, while our U17, U19 and Open competitors continued on from last season with our men’s team winning any event with a board, teams and individual races. In the women’s area we were also had strong results winning in swim, board rescue, board and board relay at some of these carnivals. Victorian Masters Championships At this year’s Masters Championships, we had 8 competitors competing in Mark Owen, Phil Kerr, Robbie Brain, Gary Askew, John Cook, Tobias Pettigrew, Xavier Thornton and Jon Watson. Robbie won gold in the 35-39 single ski, the boat crew got the silver along with Mark getting a couple of silver medals. Hopefully next year we have some more Master competitors competing.

Victorian Surf Life Saving Championships

This year’s State Championships went to Apollo Bay Surf life Saving Club. Our club had 49 competitors at these championships the same as last year. Picking up lots of gold, silver and bronzes medals across all age groups in both women's and men's water and beach areas. Brayden finished the two days with 6 gold medals and topping it off he placed second with the top 5 places in the Open Board going to Warrnambool, 1st Matt, 2nd Brayden 3rd Paddy C, 4th Steve 5th Harry. Seven of the top 10 came from WSLC. 1st and 2nd in the Open board Relay going to Warrnambool. We also finished 2nd in the Open Lifesaver relay. Sophie Thomas won the open Iron event and Open Swim. We finished 1st and 4th in the U15 each relay. A very successful Championships for the WSLSC, as this was just the tip of the ice. `Well done all. Ocean 6 This season the senior competitor competed at the ocean 6. Ocean6 travelled to some of the best beaches on the east coast of Australia for the 2017/18 season. Traveling to different locations across the summer where they tested our athletes in variety of conditions! We travelled to Coolum and Fairhaven with great results.

Dean Kilpatrick

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 18 Director of Junior Activities John Cook As a newly appointed report writer for the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club I relish in the opportunity to ensure the volunteers of our organisation gain a mention in the Annual Report for the season 2017-2018. With respect to the Junior members, or, Nippers, all I can say is that the club has seen solid development over the past number of years and this has been due to the hard work and drive of many.

I would like to acknowledge all the years of work of Dean Kilpatrick who has continued to grow the Nippers community with so much time, effort and enthusiasm.

Ultimately, the Nippers movement has once again provided new and existing junior members the opportunity to develop their surf skills and begin to transition into senior ranks via a well-planned and well supported Nippers program and Junior Competition Squad.

A highlight of the season has been the involvement with the Senior Competition Squad in their water safety and coaching of the Nippers during their sessions and in the future, we hope to increase this interaction.

Season 2017-18 has seen the introduction of the Nipper Sub-Committee to the structure of the club. This has come from feedback from the Nipper membership to spread the coordination and administration tasks of Nipper sessions, Junior Competition Squad and Carnival activities across a broader group of members. This sub-committee identified several goals for the season with respect to the engagement of nippers and their supporters, these being:

Providing information to the Nippers and their adult supporters to detail processes and procedures • Parent/guardian/ support persons involvement • Preparing competition squad members for carnivals • Preparing Nippers for transition to senior training and competition

Nipper Sessions After two information sessions to new and existing Nippers and adults the season was due to begin with the commitment to conduct 10 sessions.

Unfortunately, the first scheduled session was cancelled via Life Saving Victoria issuing an extreme weather forecast and a direction to not conduct any activity at all, so a catch-up session was included to end the season.

The attendance numbers have been consistent with a minimum of 160 Nippers and up to 220 present at any one session, overall there has been great involvement and willingness to participate that the throng at the club was a sight to behold.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 19 The Surf Awareness aspect and certification has been driven further this season and all those that entered the program have now had their efforts documented with Surf Life Saving Victoria. A highlight was having the Christmas session, again having a visit from Santa and despite Santa’s trepidation of breaching the surf zone via the IRB both Santa and the attending Nippers had a great time to welcome Christmas.

Not long after that a large number of Nippers and their adults went through the caravan parks in the annual “Tin Rattle” to seek donations, which saw a well-earned source of funds to the lifesaving cause.

The long weekend in January provided an opportunity for all Nippers to engage in a competition held at Port Fairy. This was the second time such an event has been held and it provided those Nippers that had not been to a surf carnival before the experience in a more casual environment. On a beautiful summers day our Nippers enjoyed the experience and came away with a greater understanding of what a surf carnival is about, once again our members and water safety provided great support to this event.

Thanks Every Nipper session had one constant: Andrew and Sharyn O’Bray.

This couple were willing to be there to provide the set up and execution of the food preparation each time a Nippers event was held.

Not only a BBQ of sausages, onions and bread but also roasts with gravy and rolls. As a bystander and a consumer, all I can say is a heartfelt thank you from the club and myself for the time and effort you have shown this season.

I will make a special make a special mention of Finn Guld, who could not participate as a Nipper but wanted to be with his family at the Nippers sessions and was able to be involved with the food crew, what a great effort from him and all the helpers, we hope to see all you “on deck” next season.

Nippers Session Coordinator and club Vice President, John McNeil; if he wasn’t there he was with his senior competitor children at a carnival elsewhere. His presence either on the microphone before the session began, monitoring beach safety, or, in water safety environment needs acknowledgement.

The water safety component and Age Managers were the vital link for each session to run smoothly and most of all safely.

The surf club community now stands out in a crowd and this has been due to the efforts of the fantastic efforts of the Merchandise crew, Anna Carroll, Zoe Philpott and Ange Cook to name a few have been visionaries in their selection and sales of some very attractive branded clothing. It has been easy to spot our members on the beach with our new rugby jumpers and sun visors, thanks to all.

The Junior Competition Squad

The Nipper Sub Committee identified three carnivals to attend over the season and had a great showing of competitors:

• Cosy Corner, Torquay (63 competitors) • Chelsea, State Qualifier (54 competitors) • Lorne, State Qualifier (72 competitors)

The culmination of the season, the State Titles, saw 73 nipper competitors qualify and compete, which was a tremendous effort.

The following results were achieved amongst many finalists finishing in the top 10: Gold – U11 Will Main – Boys 500m run Gold – U11 Boys Beach Relay – Will Main, Jack McNeil, Will Callaghan, Henry Hoffman Silver – U12 Mia Cook – Girls individual Board Silver – U13 Darcy Bridgewater – Boys individual Board Silver – U13 Jules Promnitz – Boys 1k run Silver – U11 Will Main – Boys beach Sprint Silver – U11 Henry Hoffman – Boys 500m run Silver – U12 Spenser Harrison – Boys Beach Flags Bronze – U9 Will Ralston – Boys 500m run Bronze – U9 Boys Board Relay – Will Ralston, Paddy Ragg, Sam Joseph Bronze – U11 Jack McNeil – Boys 500m run Bronze – U12 Anthony Debono – Boys beach sprint Bronze – U13 Alysha Ralston – Girls 1k run

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 21 The final event of the year, the Australian Surf Titles, held at Scarborough Beach, Perth saw a single junior competitor involved, Finn Cook who managed to make the quarter finals in the individual boards.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 22 Members Representative and Occupational, Health and Safety Officer’s Report Gary Askew

Surf Life Saving Australia have set strict health and safety guidelines which need to be followed by all Warrnambool Surf Club members.

Risk management must be assessed before any training session or club activity. Senior members need to take responsibility for their own safety at all times and also set safe examples and guidance for junior and less experienced members.

It's great to see most areas of the Surf Club have been kept in a tidy condition. Please ensure that bicycles, in particular, are locked onto bike racks provided and not left lying around inside the building.

All members are required to obtain their working with children's card and needs to be recorded by the club when renewing their membership. Check the club's website for details on this free and compulsory service.

Make sure any damage to equipment or buildings is reported to the relevant person or committee promptly so repairs can be undertaken.

Thanks to all members for helping out with the safety of all areas within WSLSC throughout the past season.

Gary

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 23 Director of Training and Assessment’s Report Clint Joseph

The 2017/2018 season has seen a period of change in the way training and assessment has been scheduled and documented with a movement towards online registration of courses and recording of results, the implementation of IPads for gear inspections and assessment of courses and the availability of course and reference material online via LSV.

There has been a requirement for members to obtain the certificate 4 in vocational training and assessment to facilitate to supervisory model of our trainers and assessors. Thank you to Jason Kermeen, Kristy Chiller and Josephine McDowell for completing these courses.

The 2017/2018 through natural progression saw a reduction in advanced award holders as expected. This season was the first for some time no regional training weekends were held and although now practically self-sufficient for trainers in advanced awards (which is a real credit to the time devoted by our members), due to several personal commitments, no internal training of said awards was undertaken. The reduction of awards was noted and impacted patrols. Positive actions to remedy have already been undertaken and planning for the forthcoming season has already commenced including several members intending to join the trainer and assessor group including those already holding their Cert 4 which is a real positive sign.

In the forth-coming season the training in the following awards shall be required; IRB (driver and crew), advanced resuscitation, spinal, first aid and in particular beach management for our emerging new patrol captains and future leaders.

A positive sign has been the number of new bronze medallion holders. The school system has provided in excess of 40 new bronzies. More effort is required in the retention of these members past their first season and more emphasis in welcoming and ongoing inclusion. I had the pleasure in assessing all of the school based student members this season and then hosting several on their first patrol. This is a great bunch of young adults that would be an asset to our club. An ever- increasing group of bronzies are our nipper parents. This is representative of the culture of inclusion and attitude to help that is at the forefront of our nipper program. This was especially noted in the number of nipper parents stepping up to further assist on patrols this season. This has in turn not only encouraged many associate parent members to seek out future bronze courses but also our current bronze medallion holders seeking to obtain advanced awards to further assist on patrols and take on further leadership roles including becoming trainers.

This years combined bronze and SRC course saw over 30 new awards, half of which resulted in a strong representation of new SRC members on patrol, several new senior patrol members and a strong influx of nipper parents able to assist in water safety with some already filtering through to patrols.

Our ever-increasing competition squads have seen an increased requirement for the club to provide both water safety and officials at carnivals. A blended online theory and face to face officials course was trialled at WSLSC culminating in beach assessment during competition training with simulated competition events. The course was a sounding success aided by excellent facilitation by LSV representative Daryl Moss. This format was well received by our candidates and highly recommended.

Warrnambool SLSC Annual Report – Season 2017/18 24 Member (child) protection information session facilitated by LSV for club leaders and those in positions of responsibly was well attended at the pavilion with the introduction of two new member protection officers.

Training was provided in the responsible serving of alcohol during the year at the club rooms and was enthusiastically attended.

Additional training was provided for our nipper age managers to update their awards and a refresher for those already qualified. This has allowed a more uniform presentation of nipper information and training including the nipper surf ed program.

An increasing area of assessment has been the nipper program requiring a preseason swim assessment for all nipper members, competition training squad entry evaluation swim and the LSV open water competition evaluation (S badge) swim. The pool swims are able to be undertaken by our new officials or qualified swim teachers / coaches. The open water swim requires assessment by an LSV award holder.

Looking forward to the 2018/2019 season sees many positive signs in the increase in members seeking base awards, wanting to undertake further training in advanced awards, assist in water safety and undertake regular patrols plus a keen interest in new members in becoming trainers and the recognition of a more coordinated approach to the training of awards within the BOM.

Focus on the second half of 2018 will be the commencement of IRB training then training of advanced awards to bolster patrol ranks.

Thank you to Jo McDowell and Dean Kilpatrick in your assistance in training this year's bronzies and SRC members and the numerous SRC parents whom assisted in water safety during training a tribute to the culture of our club.

Thank you to the support provided by LSV, district training officer Katrina Antony and chief instructors and assessors from our neighbouring clubs during periods of peak demands including skills maintenance sessions.
