Email: [email protected] there is an ongoing movement to build a statue for her. Secondly, there is a movie called Ammonite (Lionsgate, 2020) that is a dramatic retelling of her story. While most paleontologists are happily supportive of the statue-building campaign, the community (and critics) was divided re- garding the movie, mostly due to Anning’s portrayal as a lesbian.2 Yep, people still get angry with those sorts of things. Anyway, I will not discuss the movie here, because I’m neither entitled to nor interested in dis- cussing dead scientists’ sexuality. Besides, I haven’t watched it. I think, however, that I am in a good po- sition to talk about another representation of Mary Anning in pop culture. As possibly the only – or one of the very few3 – profes- sional paleontologists invested in the Fate franchise,4 I dedicate this article to discuss Anning’s incarnation in Fate/Grand Order. SUMMARY OF NATURAL VALUES Located on the south coast of Britain, the nominated property comprises eight sections along 155km of largely undeveloped coast and countryside between Orcombe Rocks, near Exmouth in east Devon in the west, and Studland Bay, Dorset, in the east. The total area of the site is 2,550ha, 80% of which is cliffed coastline. The property has a combination of internationally renowned geological features considered by both palaeontologists and geomorphologists to be one of the most significant research sites for their respective fields of study in the world. The nominated site includes a near-continuous sequence of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rock exposures, representing almost the entire Mesozoic Era (between 251 and 66 million years ago), or approximately 185 million years of Earth history. The Triassic succession of mudstones and sandstones is over 1,100m thick, representing 50 million years of deposition. The sequence of Jurassic strata exposed between Lyme Regis and Swanage is among the best sections of marine Jurassic-age rocks to be found anywhere in the world. -
An Offshore Transgressive–Regressive Mudstone-Dominated Succession from the Sinemurian of Skåne, Sweden
An offshore transgressive–regressive mudstone-dominated succession from the Sinemurian of Skåne, Sweden Nils Frandsen and Finn Surlyk A Sinemurian mudstone-dominated succession was exposed until recently in the Gantofta quarry in Skåne, southern Sweden. The deposits are placed in the Döshult and Pankarp Members of the Sinemurian–Aalenian Rya Formation. Similar facies of the same age are widespread in the Danish Basin where they constitute the F-Ib unit (F-I member) of the Fjerritslev Formation. The Gantofta succession thus represents the easternmost extension of the environment characteris- tic of the Fjerritslev Formation and is essentially the only locality where it has been possible to study the facies of this formation in outcrop. Sedimentation seems to have taken place under rel- atively quiet tectonic conditions except for the possible fault-control of the basin margin. The lower part of the Gantofta section is of Early and early Late Sinemurian age. It represents the upper part of the Döshult Member and consists of muddy, lower shoreface sandstones, abruptly overlain by dark, bioturbated, fossiliferous mudstones with thin storm siltstones and sandstones. They are overlain by the Upper Sinemurian Pankarp Member which comprises red-brown, restricted marine calcareous mudstones with an upwards increasing number of storm siltstones and sandstones reflecting general shallowing and shoreline progradation. The succession spans the greater part of two simple sequences with a distal sequence bound- ary located at the boundary between the Döshult Member and the Pankarp Member. The exposed part of the lower sequence includes a thick transgressive systems tract and a very thin highstand systems tract. -

ACTA PALAEONTOLOGICA ROMANIAE V. 5 (2005), P. 483-491 NEW DATA ABOUT THE AGE AND THE STRATIGRAPHICAL POSITION IN THE CRETACEOUS WILDFLISH OF THE OLISTOLITH FROM PRAŞCA PEAK (RARĂU SYNCLINE, EASTERN CARPATHIANS, ROMANIA) Paul ŢIBULEAC1 REZUMAT: Lucrarea prezintă primele rezultate din cercetarea recentă a olistolitului din dealul Praşca (Sinclinalul Rarău, Carpaţii Orientali) şi este fundamentată pe o faună de amoniţi cu valoarea biostratigrafică, unii dintre taxonii figuraţi fiind semnalaţi pentru prima dată în acest punct fosilifer: Paracoroniceras lyra, Agassiceras scipionianum, Euagassiceras sauzeanum (=E. resupinatus), E. spinaries, Arnioceras densicosta, Caenisites cf. brooki, Eparietites denotatus, Asteroceras cf. suevicum, A. cf. involutum, Echioceras raricostatoides, Leptechioceras meigeni, Paltechioceras boehmi, Epideroceras lorioli etc. O altă noutate este prelevarea unor amoniţi in situ, spre deosebire de toate faunele semnalate de cercetătorii anteriori. Din interpretarea datelor faunistice rezultă argumentarea unor noi biozone/ subbiozone index ale Sinemurianului, poziţia răsturnată a olistolitului în cadrul wildflişului cretacic şi posibilitatea prezenţei Hettangianului, la partea inferioară, respectiv a Pliensbachianului, la partea superioară a stratelor (dedusă din corelarea exemplarelor prelevate in situ cu extinderea în relief a olistolitului). Riding email [email protected] 9 10 ABSTRACT 11 Since the publication of five literature compilations issued between 2012 and 2020, 63 further 12 published contributions on Triassic, Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous (Berriasian) 13 dinoflagellate cysts have been discovered, or were issued in the last 14 months (i.e. between 14 February 2019 and March 2020). These studies are on North Africa, Southern Africa, East 15 Arctic, West Arctic, east and west sub-Arctic Canada, China and Japan, East Europe, West 16 Europe, the Middle East, and sub-Arctic Russia west of the Ural Mountains, plus multi- 17 region studies and items with no geographical focus. The single-region studies are mostly 18 focused on Africa, the Arctic, Europe and the Middle East. Ammonites were probably eaten by fellow cephalopods 3 December 2010, by Lin Edwards shell in place. A bite at this point would have severed the muscles and allowed the body to be drawn out of the shell. Any predator producing the bite marks would need to have been precise, and must have been capable of grabbing hold of the ammonite and manipulating it into the right position for the kill. One of the authors of the paper, Paddy Howe, a geologist with the Lyme Regis Museum, said modern cephalopods are perfectly capable of the kind of adept behavior required, and a beaked squid could certainly be the culprit, since the bite marks are consistent with a beak. Another possibility is a gas bubble between the body and the shell, but as Richard Edmonds of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site points out, this is a much less likely explanation.
