Family Fabaceae Taxonomic notes Synonyms: Lupinus sulphureus ssp. kincaidii, Lupinus sulphureus var. kincaidii, Lupinus oreganus var. kincaidii, Oregon lupine The genus Lupinus poses many taxonomic challenges due to the extremely variable nature of the species and intergradations between recognized taxa, a situation that in many instances is likely the result of or complicated by free interbreeding that has obscured species boundaries. Hybridization is known to occur between Kincaid’s lupine and Lupinus arbustus. Plant description Kincaid’s lupine is a perennial arising from a branched crown, usually with numerous unbranched stems (30) 40-80 (100) cm tall, with whitish or brownish stiff to silky pubescence. Basal leaves are usually persistent until after flowering, with petioles (2) 3-5 times the length of the blades; upper cauline leaves have petioles sometimes shorter than the blades. Leaflets typically number 7-12, are narrowly oblanceolate, usually somewhat acute, 2.5-5 cm long, often remaining somewhat folded, and usually glabrous above and sparsely to copiously hairy beneath. Inflorescences are slender, the flowers numerous and arranged in interrupted whorls. Flowers are fragrant and range in color from bluish or purple to yellowish or creamy white, quickly turning orange- brown with age. The banner is distinctively ruffled (markedly concave on the lateral faces), glabrous, and only somewhat reflexed from the glabrous keel. Pods are 3-4 cm long, with 1-6 pinkish-brown to black seeds. -

Wilson Kincaid’s lupine (Lupinus oreganus Heller) is a federally listed threatened species native to remnant grassland of western Oregon and southwestern Washington, and is the primary larval host plant of a once thought extinct butterfly, Plebejus icarioides fenderi Macy. Past studies concerning Kincaid’s lupine reproduction suggested that populations may suffer reductions in fitness and progeny vigor due to inbreeding depression, but no direct investigation into range-wide patterns of genetic variation has been undertaken. I used nuclear DNA and chloroplast DNA simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to determine genet size and patterns of non-adventitious rhizomatous lupine spread, to estimate the number of genets within Kincaid’s lupine populations, and to assess whether seed transfer for the purpose of genetic rescue is an appropriate genetics management strategy for Kincaid’s lupine. Patterns of allelic diversity at nDNA SSR loci within study patches revealed that non-adventitious spread of rhizomes can extend to at least 27 m and may dominate a portion of a lupine patch or small population. However, genet spread and arrangement in study patches were sufficiently integrated such that interplantlet Bombus foraging flights exceeding 2 m had > 90% probability of occurring between different genets. Within-lupine patch genetic diversity was well-undersampled, refuting the supposition that Kincaid’s lupine populations suffer from inbreeding depression due to small effective population sizes. -

Xalapa. Veracruz, México 1Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: Mexico is a megadiverse country and Veracruz is one of the states with the highest foristic diversity. The reserve of La Mancha in central coastal Veracruz comprises several vegetation types. In this site we conducted for a year, monthly surveys of fowering or fruiting plants in six vegetation types, considering the frequency of occurrence of different species. We found a total of 147 species (131 genera and 63 families). The families most represented were Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Verbenaceae. In addi- tion, we found nine species that had not been reported in previous foristic studies. The highest taxonomic richness was observed in the tropical deciduous food forest with wetland (59 species), while the highest diversity was found in tropical deciduous forest (SDI = 0.9562). We also found that the most similar vegetation types based on the composition and frequency of species were, coastal dune scrub, tropical deciduous forest and pioneer dune vegetation. The dominant plant biological form in La Mancha were herbs (40.41 %) followed by shrubs (23.97 %), vines-lianas (18.49 %) and trees (17.12 %). This study is the frst to consider the frequency-occurrence of fowering and fruiting plants in La Mancha, covering six vegetation types through one year. The more relevant results of this study show the diversity of plants in different environments using the frequency of each species based on reproductive events.
