Chairman Message

As the joint-chairman of the main committee, I welcome all of you to ICNIR 2003, the first International Conference on Non-Ionization Radiation to be held on 20th -22nd October 2003 at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, , . The conference is organized by Ministry of Health, Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Energy Commission of Malaysia, Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission, the World Health Organization (WHO), IEEE and CIGRE, and hosted by Universiti Tenaga Nasional. The number of registered participants at the conference is about 400 representing 10 countries. It is indeed interesting to see that people of diverse backgrounds coming on one platform to discuss matters of interest to the general public.

The scientific program consists of 17 oral presentations and 5 keynote papers, a one day tutorial and a panel discussion. The purpose and scope of the conference is to review the biological effects from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). These effects will be discussed in relation to possible health consequences from electromagnetic fields exposure resulting from devices and equipment used such as power lines, domestic and industrial electrical appliances, mobiles, electrical transportation systems. International and regional scientists and researchers will provide an overview of the biological and health effects from exposure to electromagnetic fields reported in the scientific literature. One of the major objectives of the conference is to discuss different experience in electromagnetic fields standards between countries. Another objective is to find out what can be don to reduce or eliminate these effects. And hopefully it will dispel the public ignorance and fear of these effects.

I wish success to all participants in their deliberations.
