Sapientia Crucis II - 2001 Die Frau als Offenbarungsstätte Gottes Ein dreifaches Jubiläum der Frau, Dichterin und Theologin Gertrud von le Fort 125. Geburtstag (11.10.) - 75 Jahre Konversion - 30. Todestag (1.11.)

Doctor of Philosophy (Musicology), December 2011, 205 pp., 3 tables, 24 musical examples, bibliography, 155 titles. Francis Poulenc’s three-act opera Dialogues des Carmélites (1953-1956) depicts the struggles of the novice nun Blanche de la Force during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. The use of Latin liturgical music at critical points in the opera conveys the ritualistic nature of Catholic worship. The spiritual message of mystical substitution, along with the closely related notion of vicarious suffering, imbue the opera with a spirituality that offers a sharp contrast to earlier operatic settings of Catholic texts, particularly during the age of grand opera. Marian devotion also plays an important role in the opera. The final tableau of the opera stages the execution of Blanche and her sisters, complete with the sound of a guillotine, with the nuns singing the Salve Regina as they proceed to the scaffold. The multivalence of the final tableau highlights the importance of voice and its absence.

  • A Historical, Literary, and Musical Analysis of Francis Poulenc's Dialogues Des Carmélites
A HISTORICAL, LITERARY, AND MUSICAL ANALYSIS OF FRANCIS POULENC’S DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES Gail Elizabeth Lowther A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Mary Natvig ii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor On 17 July 1794, at the height of Maximilien Robespierre’s “Reign of Terror” (1793– 1794), sixteen Carmelite nuns were guillotined at the Place du Trône in Paris, having been condemned to death by the Revolutionary Tribunal for crimes against the French people. Beginning with Gertrud von Le Fort’s 1931 novella Die Letzte am Schafott, the account of the Carmelites’ martyrdom has since inspired a series of quasi-historical dramatic adaptations, including a film scenario (1947) by Raymond-Léopold Bruckberger with dialogues (1947–1948) by Georges Bernanos, as well as Francis Poulenc’s opera Dialogues des Carmélites (1953– 1956). Although Le Fort, Bernanos, and Poulenc each appropriated some aspects of the historical account in his or her version of the martyrdom, at the heart of each retelling is the fictional story of Blanche de la Force, the progeny of Gertrud von Le Fort’s fear-stricken imagination. In my thesis, I focus on the theme of fear in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and specifically his characterization of Blanche de la Force and her conflicts of fear. I will compare Gertrud von Le Fort’s, Georges Bernanos’s, and Francis Poulenc’s treatment of Blanche and her fear in their respective adaptations of the story of the Carmelites of Compiègne.

The Rescue of Jews and the Memory of Nazism in Germany, from the Third Reich to the Present Kobi (Yaakov) Kabalek Master of Arts, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, 2004 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Corcoran Department of History University of Virginia June 2013 1 Abstract This dissertation examines the changing images and meanings of assistance to Jews in the German societies from the Nazi period to the present. Recent studies of the rescue of Jews claim that before the 1990s this topic was “forgotten” in the Germanys. I show, in contrast, that depictions of solidarity with and assistance to Jews appeared in a variety of media and social practices ever since the immediate postwar years and played important roles in debating the morality of Germans. This dissertation traces the roots of the postwar memory of rescuing Jews in the Third Reich. It examines the transformation of attitudes from the Nazi regime’s condemnation of solidarity with Jews as a primary condition for becoming a member of the “national community,” to reversed approaches after 1945. At the same time, it also demonstrates the continuation of cultural patterns, concepts, and images from and before the Nazi years to the postwar era. I argue that while in the first two decades after WWII descriptions of rescue were “scattered” in and among representations and practices whose main interest was rarely the rescue of Jews, they nevertheless occupied a crucial place in shaping memories of the Nazi past by presenting a positive image of a moral Germany and providing non-Jewish Germans with an relatively unproblematic path to approach the Holocaust.
