Thus, both in terms of quantities produced and the value of its products, the vine constitutes a particularly important cultivation. THE HOST PLANT AND ITS CULTIVATION The original area of distribution of the genus Vitis was broken up by the separation of the continents; although numerous species developed, Vitis vinifera has been cultivated from the beginning for its fruit and wine producing qualities (43, 75, 184). This cultivation commenced in Transcaucasia about 6000 B.C. Subsequent human migration spread its cultivation, at firstaround the Mediterranean coast; the Roman conquest led to the plant's progressive establishment in Europe, almost to its present extent. Much later, the WesternEuropeans planted the grape vine wherever cultiva tion was possible, i.e. throughout the temperate and warm temperate regions of the by NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY on 02/01/10. The evaluation of genetic relationships within Acridid grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Caelifera, Acrididae) on the subfamily level using molecular markers. Folia Biologica (Kraków) 67: 119-126. Over the last few decades, molecular markers have been extensively used to study phylogeny, population dynamics, and genome mapping in insects and other taxa. Phylogenetic methods using DNA markers are inexpensive, fast and simple to use, and may help greatly to resolve phylogenetic relationships in groups with problematic taxonomy. However, different markers have various levels of phylogenetic resolution, and it’s important to choose the right set of molecular markers for a studied taxonomy level. Acrididae is the most diverse family of grasshoppers. Many attempts to resolve the phylogenetic relationships within it did not result in a clear picture, partially because of the limited number of molecular markers used. We have tested a phylogenetic resolution of three sets of the most commonly utilized mitochondrial molecular markers available for Acrididae sequences in the database: (i) complete protein-coding mitochondrial sequences, (ii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI, COII, and Cytb, and (iii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI and COII.

Štúra 2,SK-96053 Zvolen, Slovakia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Montane grassy habitats in the Western Carpathians are relatively well preserved, maintain high species richness and are often important in accordance to the nature conservation policy in Europe. However, knowledge about the impact of farming on the habitat quality there is rather poor. The influence of various management types (permanent sheep pen, irregular grazing, mowing) on Orthoptera diversity and species determining assemblages of these habitats were analysed on 72 plots in Poľana Mts Biosphere Reserve. Altogether, 36 Orthoptera species (15 Ensifera, 21 Caelifera) were found, whereas the highest number of species was found on plots with irregular grazing (28 species), followed by plots with mown grass (17) and permanent sheep pens (14). All four measures of the assemblages’ diversity confirmed significant differences. Using Discriminant Function Analysis, correct classification rate of Orthoptera assemblages was unambiguous according to the type of management. Each form of the management harboured several characteristic species. Thus implications regarding the biodiversity conservation and grassland management were given. Key words: bush-crickets; grasshoppers; pasture; ecology; nature conservation Introduction or the influence of plant succession in meadows without any management (Marini et al. 2009). ORTHOPTERA RECORDING SCHEME FOR BRITAIN AND IRELAND Newsletter 25 - February 1999 Editor: John Widgery 2I FieldYiew Road Potters Bar Herts EN6 2NA Tel: 01707 642708 INTRODUCTION It seems incredible that another year has passed since the last newsletter (NL24). This current newsletter is inænded to update all readers of the most significant developments since then. Of course, those of you who take British Wildlife magazine may already be awarg tlrough my 'rWildlife Notes', of some of the information contained herein. The success ofthe scheme relies upon your endeavours and, once again, I am indebted to the many of you who have submitted records and also to Paul Pearce-Kelly, Rachel Jones and Bryan Pinchen for their contributions on rare species. SUMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS In comparison with recent years, the summer of 1998 was disappointing, although parts of southern England did have some reÍlsonably warm and dry weather during August and early September which is probably the most important period for the breeding success of many species. It was, perhaps, not surprising that there were fewer records submitted during 1998 as compared with the previous yàr but, even so, there were still several thousand which involved a total of 349 new l0hn squares (including 68 post-1970 refinds). Of these, 195 (including 23 post-1970s) were for 1998, including first ever records for Roesel's Bush Cricket, Metrioptera roeselii, in the Channel Islands, Long-winged Conehead, Conocephalus discolor, in Cambridgeshire and Lesnets Earwig, Forfcula lesnei,in Worcestershire and also a national first for this latter species in lreland. Additionally, we had the most northerly yet records for Lesser Marsh Grasshopper, Chorthippus albomarginqtus.

ZooKeys 665: 85–92. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.665.12339 Abstract Phylogenetic analysis and assessment of the species status of mostly isolated populations of Pholidoptera frivaldszkyi in south-western Russia occurring far beyond the accepted area of the species distribution in the Carpathian-Balkan region were performed. Using the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene fragment, we found a very low level of genetic diversity in these populations. Phylogeo- graphic reconstruction did not support recent introduction events but rather historical range fragmenta- tion.

  • IX. Effets Prévisibles Du Projet
Agence PACA IX.
