Luciana Souza sings, if not speaks, in tongues We chat with the Brazilian vocal great, a 6-time Grammy-nominee, who performs in La Jolla Thursday with her all-star band By George Varga March 12, 2016 Six tracks on Luciana Souza’s Grammy-nominated 2015 album “Speaking in Tongues” are wordless, each an attempt to create a rich and varied soundscape. Kim Fox 1 0 What’s in a word? This question has long challenged and fascinated singers and songwriters as they strive to articulate both simple and complex thoughts and emotions with maximum impact. But what if there are no words to sing? How do performers capture and convey the feelings and stories they want to tell, using their voice, but no lyrics? That was the challenge internationally acclaimed Brazilian singer Luciana Souza faced — or, rather, embraced — when she made her striking 2015 album, “Speaking in Tongues.” It is the 13th solo release by Souza, whose past collaborators range from Herbie Hancock and Paul Simon to David Bowie saxophonist Donny McCaslin and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Orchestra. Jazz at the Athenaeum presents Luciana Souza: Speaking in Tongues Six of the nine selections on “Tongues” feature Souza singing, wordlessly, with consistently stunning results. Two of the other tracks, “No One to Follow” and “Split,” are poems by Leonard Cohen set to music, while the Souza-penned “Straw Hat” was inspired by her father, a noted Brazilian singer and composer. Drawing from jazz, samba, funk, Afro-pop and more, the album delights in any language, with or without words. -

Boston Globe, March, 2006
The Boston Globe March 17, 2006 She breaks down musical boundaries Luciana Souza sings with no fear, winning respect of her peers Three of Luciana Souza's four most recent CDs have earned her Grammy nominations, including ''Duos II," which this year was edged out for best jazz vocal album by Dianne Reeves and the ''Good Night, and Good Luck" soundtrack. But Souza's not a big star yet by any means. What popularity she has remains largely confined to the jazz cognoscenti and her fellow musicians, the latter of whom seem uniformly to adore her. High on the list of things they admire about Souza is her willingness to take risks. Consider the rapid-fire unison lines she sings with guitarist Romero Lubambo on ''Duos II," the album they'll likely draw heavily from in their Bank of America Celebrity Series double bill with Joe Lovano tomorrow night at Sanders Theatre. Souza, 39, and Lubambo have been playing together for a decade. But while they've built up a large repertoire of material over the years, they rarely have occasion to practice together beyond sound checks. It can sometimes come back to haunt them in concert, Souza admits. ''We have a way of doing them that hopefully comes out clean," Souza explains, laughing. ''Some nights we get into trouble, but even that is exciting for the audience. You try your best, and sometimes it succeeds. Sometimes we fail miserably, and we go back and go, 'Here we go one more time,' and just try again in front of people. -

Singer Luciana Souza Interprets Chet Baker and Further Explores Her Brazilian Roots on Two New Albums
Singer Luciana Souza interprets Chet Baker and further explores her Brazilian roots on two new albums. By Ted Panken • Photos by Bob Wolfenson 46 fall 2012 jazziz “I have a little story to tell you,” says vocalist Luciana Souza, Music from 1984 to 1988. “I became smitten by him — not as a recalling the third and final studio session that generated The man, but by his voice and music,” she recalls. “I dug his mood, Book of Chet (Sunnyside), a CD released in August comprising his sense of pitch, where he places the note in his voice and the 10 renderings of American Songbook jewels upon which Chet fact that he dealt with vibrato differently than other American Baker placed his distinctive stamp. “Right after lunch I decided singers — a straight tone, with a fast vibrato and a slower to sing ‘I Get Along Without You Very Well.’ We had rehearsed it, one.” During the early ’90s, while pursuing graduate studies at so I thought it would come out as easy as everything else. I was New England Conservatory, she augmented her knowledge by on mic, everybody wearing headphones, tuned, ready to go. They transcribing scat solos from several Baker recordings. All the started playing, and I froze. It felt so slow, and I didn’t know how to while, Souza adds, she was well aware of Baker’s influence on fit the words into the meter. I had a moment of feeling like death.” the way bossa nova trailblazer João Gilberto conceptualized the Souza’s producer, Larry Klein, her husband since 2006 and the projection of saudade, the famously untranslatable Portuguese father of their 3-year-old son, made a quick suggestion. -
Jazz History, November 2015
JAZZ HISTORY ONLINE NOVEMBER, 2015! Luciana Souza: Passion and Versatility by Thomas Cunniffe Like Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, and Bobby McFerrin, Luciana Souza retains her unique identity regardless of the type of music she sings. Her range is staggering. She is a remarkable improviser with recordings that pair her with the most progressive musicians in jazz today. She is also an exquisite interpreter of pop songs, both classic and contemporary, offering definitive renditions of songs as varied as “Never Let Me Go”, “Waters of March” and “The Very Thought of You”. Her three albums of “Brazilian Duos” introduced great songs from Souza’s native land to American audiences by setting her expressive voice against solo guitar accompaniments by Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira, Toninho Horta, Guilherme Monteiro, Swami, Jr. and her father, Walter Santos. She is also one of the premier interpreters of the music of the contemporary classical composer Osvaldo Golijov, performing his dramatic and vocally challenging music with orchestras and choruses around the world. She has written her own compositions with original words and music, and has also set the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda and Leonard Cohen to her own melodies. JAZZ HISTORY ONLINE NOVEMBER, 2015! However, there is more to Souza’s art than just the mastery of diverse styles. Souza brings deep passion to everything she sings. She picks her repertoire carefully, and is meticulous about finding the right tempo and setting to properly transmit a song’s message. Her recording of “All of Me” sounds like a total act of romantic submission, and her setting of Neruda’s “Tonight I Can Write” conveys a feeling of loneliness and release. -

James Taylor
JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. He has sold some 35 million albums throughout his career, which began back in 1968 when he was signed by Peter Asher to the Beatles’ Apple Records. The album James Taylor was his first and only solo effort for Apple, which came a year after his first working experience with Danny Kortchmar and the band Flying Machine. It was only a matter of time before Taylor would make his mark. Above all, there are the songs: “Fire and Rain,” “Country Road,” “Something in The Way She Moves,” ”Mexico,” “Shower The People,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “You Can Close Your Eyes,” “Walking Man,” “Never Die Young,” “Shed A Little Light,” “Copperline” and many more. -
Lauren Kinhan
LAUREN KINHAN The first thing you notice is her voice, and then her savvy choices. Lauren Kinhan possesses a rare and beautiful instrument, tough and tender, clear and fine-grained in every register, whether she’s dipping down into husky chest tones or ascending into silvery head tones. With her glorious sound, she could sing anything and make it a memorable listening experience. Whether on her own highly-acclaimed albums, as a 26-year member of the beloved vocal group New York Voices, or as co-founder of two diverse and inventive supergroups, Moss and JaLaLa, singer and composer Lauren has always forged her own path as a performer, composer and improviser. With her latest, A Sleepin’ Bee on her own Dotted i Records, Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply. Downbeat Magazine agreed, giving it 41/2 Stars in it’s February 2018 issue! If the sudden appearance of an album’s worth of standards in a catalogue dominated by original songs comes as a surprise, the process of its creation is just as atypical. While Kinhan spent much of 2016 conceiving, rehearsing and workshopping the project, the circumstances of the recording arose suddenly through the auspices of her alma mater, Berklee College of Music. The session was an educational opportunity as well as a record date, providing a small group of Berklee students the invaluable privilege of observing and engaging in a recording session at the highest level. -
Luciana Souza: the Book of Longing December 1 at Royce Hall
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CAP UCLA presents Luciana Souza: The Book of Longing December 1 at Royce Hall "...the ethereal, wordless vocal lines that singer Luciana Souza unfurled… sound unlike any other… [her] haunting, technically mercurial scat lines floated easily above the ensemble sound." —Chicago Tribune UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) presents Grammy Award-winning Brazilian jazz vocalist Luciana Souza on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. at Royce Hall. Tickets for $26–$56 are available now at cap.ucla.edu, via Ticketmaster, by phone 310-825-2101, and at the UCLA Central Ticket Office. Souza’s first album in three years, The Book of Longing features original music written on the poetry of Leonard Cohen, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Emily Dickinson, and more. Souza is accompanied by Scott Colley on bass and Chico Pinheiro on guitar, an abundantly intelligent collaboration. The music from this album is a treasure trove of tracks that speak frankly with limitless power. “Luciana Souza has used her voice as an instrument of empathy and intimacy, cultural linkage and poetic disquisition… singing wordlessly but with full expressive intent,” said New York Times. A uniquely talented artist, Souza has been dubbed provocative, impassioned, esoteric, soulful, and quite remarkable. Her boundaryless career has led to generous collaborations and six Grammy-nominated records. The Book of Longing is a vital piece of Souza’s career. She considers this work a part of her. Funds for the CAP UCLA presentation are provided by the Ginny Mancini Endowment for Vocal Performance. CAP UCLA’s Jazz series continues in 2019 with Ofertório featuring Caetano, Moreno, Zeca, and Tom Veloso (April 7, Royce Hall). -
