January 31, 2016 Page 3 Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) Reaching Out Together as One Church To Know, Love and Serve

As an individual parish, we are continually engaged in serving the less fortunate in our neighborhood and around the world. This weekend, however, we join the 61 other parishes that make up the Diocese of Or- ange to provide support for thousands of people in Orange County through the ministries and services fund- ed by the Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA).

What is Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA)? The Pastoral Services Appeal is an annual campaign of the Orange Catholic Foundation held on behalf of the Diocese of Orange that grants funds to support ministries and services that serve all parishes and the local community. It also gives parishes the opportunity to raise significant capital funds by earning rebates over their own individual parish goal.

Who does PSA serve? PSA supports eleven important ministries & services which assist the poor, the incarcerated, the Catholic deaf community, lay leaders, clergy and seminarians, among others. Please see the PSA brochure in the church pews and page 6 in this bulletin for more information.

Why should I give? We all share in the responsibility of caring for those who benefit from PSA. We know by faith that we are good stewards whenever we share with others what God has entrusted to our care. Without PSA, over 2,000 children would not be able to receive a Catholic education; 165,000 people would not be able to find assistance through Catholic Charities; lay ministers, religious, priests, deacons and seminarians would not have the necessary education and formation to serve the church in their God-given vocations; the incarcerated and the victims of crime would not receive the compassion they deserve; and, the Cath- olic deaf community would not be able to participate in the Church through American Sign Language.

Another reason to give is that 100% of all payments over our parish goal will be returned to our parish on a monthly basis for our project: Refresh the Kitchen! (see page 6)

How much should I give? Prayer The people who benefit from PSA count on every Catholic to contribute through prayer and a financial support. Prayer really does make a difference. I am asking every adult and child to make a commitment to pray for one of the ministries supported by PSA. Please express your commitment by filling out the Prayer Commitment Card which is inside the PSA envelope. Circle the PSA ministry you are going to pray for this year, put your name on the PSA envelope, and return it to the parish.

Financial Gift Ministries require money. Our parish has always been generous when responding to those in need. The Pastoral Service Appeal is by far our parish’s largest outreach campaign. It is not a second collection; it is annual fund, so your financial pledge can be fulfilled at one time or over the course of this year.

Trying (imperfectly) to lead by example, I am making a commitment to pray for the detention ministry and I will give $250, pay- ing $25 each month over ten months. Please make an offering in proportion to your income. At the least, please, give some- thing!

Is it true that St. Edward the Confessor Parish raises more money through the PSA than any other parish? No, last year several parishes in our diocese raised more money than we did. In addition, many smaller parishes had much high- er participation from their parishioners than we did. Only 423 families of our parish’s 6,800 registered families, or 7%, contrib- uted to PSA. (see page 6) This year our parish does have the largest PSA goal, $235k; however, the goals are calculated so that every parish gives in equal proportion according its size and income. Therefore smaller, poorer parishes have lower goals while larger, more affluent parishes like ours have higher goals.

Let’s take a leadership role in our diocese by doing what we do best – reaching out to others, not just as one parish but together as one church. And, let’s refresh that kitchen!

All Are Invited to the Feast of San Felipe de Jesús Friday, February 5th

The Chapel of San Felipe de Jesús celebrates the feast day of San Felipe de Jesús on Friday, February 5 with adoration in the chapel from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. followed by a proces- sion honoring San Felipe de Jesús at 6:30 p.m. then Mass at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. There will be food and entertainment following the Mass.

Our parish was originally located on the site of the current San Felipe de Jesús Chapel in 1950 under the patronage of St. Edward the Confessor. When the parish center was relo- cated to its current location, the ´s name of St. Edward the Confessor moved to the new location. At that time the original church needed a new patron saint´s name and San Felipe de Jesús became the patron saint of what is now our parish Chapel. Currently, San Felipe is blessed with many active ministries that use the Chapel Monday through Saturday and Sundays for Eucharistic Liturgy at 10 am. Most recently the Chapel has become a satellite office for Catholic Charities of Orange County to serve the needs of our diocese in South Orange County. FAM of San Clemente will be providing outreach services one day a week to the poor and homeless of our area in partnership with St. Edward the Confessor Parish. All are invited to share in this celebration of our Chapel´s patron saint!

Saint Philip of Jesus (Spanish: San Felipe de Jesús) was a Mexican Catholic missionary who became one of the Twenty-six Martyrs of , the first Mexican saint and patron saint of City. Philip was born in in 1572. Though unusually frivolous as a boy, he joined the Reformed of the Province of St. Didacus, founded in Mexico by St. Peter Baptista, with whom he suffered martyrdom later. After some months in the Order, Philip grew tired of religious life, left the Franciscans in 1589, took up a mercantile career, and went to the Philip- pines, another Spanish colony, where he led a life of pleasure. Later he desired to re-enter the Franciscans and was again admitted at in 1590.

He was sent to Mexico for ordination since the episcopal see of Manila was vacant at that time, and thus no bishop was available locally to ordain him. He sailed on 12 July 1596, but a storm drove the vessel upon the coast of Japan. The governor of the province confiscated the ship and imprisoned its crew and passengers, among whom were an- other Franciscan , Juan de Zamorra, as well as three other , two and a Dominican. The Japa- nese Taikō commanded on December 8, 1596, the arrest of the Franciscans in the friary at Miako, now , where St. Philip had gone.

There were six Franciscan friars, seventeen Japanese Franciscan tertiaries and the Japanese Jesuit , with his two native servants arrested. The ears of the prisoners were cropped on January 3, 1597, and they were paraded through the streets of Kyoto; on January 21 they were taken to , and then to , which they reached on February 5, 1597. They were taken to a mountain near Nagasaki city, "Mount of the Martyrs", bound upon crosses, after which they were pierced with spears.

Anointing of the Sick—Thursday, Feb. 11 — World Day of the Sick

On Thursday, February 11 immediately following the closing prayer of the 8:15 a.m. Mass, the priests will administer the Sacrament of the Sick by anointing those who suffer from serious physical or mental illness that is either life- debilitating or life-threatening. A person does not have to dying to receive this sacrament. “Hence as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him ( or her) to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.” ( CCC1514)

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength to those who are being tried by illness.

Small Group Formation is happening NOW! A small group consists of three or more people who gather at a chosen time in a home, workplace, other designated place, or online. A small group comes together to talk about God and faith and Some groups study Scripture or watch and discuss a video se- ries. Other groups do service projects together. IT’S UP TO THE SMALL GROUP TO DECIDE what to do at each meeting. The main purpose is to form companionship on the spiritual journey so that no one feels alone.

Who Can Join a Small Group? Any adults, any age – singles, married people (with children or without children), co-workers, neighbors, friends – can join a small group. You can choose a multi-generational group or a group specifically your age… Ready? Find a group that fits you or start one of your own.

Start A Small Group We need people who are willing to start small groups and host them. This simply means that you are the designated organizer/facilitator. The best part of starting a small group is that you get to choose when you meet, the location, and what you would like the group to do. WE WILL TRAIN YOU TO BE A FACILITATOR. IT IS EASY AND NOT TIME-CONSUMING. The parish will match people to what your group does, when it meets, and where. OR you can invite people to join your group and form it yourself. Whatever works for you.

Do you think you want to start a small group or need more information? Go to: http://stedward.com/small-faith-sharing-groups-sign-up or email Liz Iorio in the Faith Formation Office: [email protected].
