P AUL, SPEAKING ABOUT THE PERSONAL REVOLUTION OF BECOMING A C HRISTIAN (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 NLT) 001-108_JesusFrks-Vol2_Revolutionaries 10/15/10 10:55 AM Page 12 Jesus Freaks II ”LORD, Show Me theTruth” By 1967 it was as if a whole generation had detached itself from the conventional values of their society and converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco looking for answers. Yet what was touted as a haven for free thinking and countercultural renewal had instead become a viper’s pit of hard drugs, rape, abuse of innocence, organized crime, and the recruiting ground for every religious persuasion imaginable. Into this walked a young man named Kent Philpott, who felt compelled of God to go there with the Gospel. In April of 1967, he met another young man, David Hoyt, who had devoted himself to 12 Hinduism and preached the world of Krishna Consciousness. They began months of debating back and forth the nature of truth and spirituality that brought in many friends and supporters on both sides. Kent’s open-minded dialogue and David’s sincere search for truth soon had David reeling in doubt about what he had previ- ously held as true. Then one night in desperation, he called out to God: “Lord, show me the Truth. Jesus Christ, if you are the Son of God, come into my life! Forgive and heal me!” In what was to David a blinding burst of light like what Paul experienced on the road to Damascus came the realization that Jesus was God’s Son, sent to the world to free him. Jesus was alive and the true Savior of humanity! Jesus was the only one who could truly set people free! David became a Christian on the spot. Soon after this, Kent and David teamed up to become among the first to establish a mission in the Haight-Ashbury district and reach out to those coming there for new answers. From their efforts and others that sprang up around the same time began the revival that became known as the Jesus Movement. They were among the first revolutionaries to be called “Jesus Freaks.” 001-108_JesusFrks-Vol2_Revolutionaries 10/15/10 10:55 AM Page 13 Fearing God, Not Man Why Search for Truth? The personal revolution of becoming a Christian has always been the only basis of true freedom and real change. Though the truths of God’s Word and His kingdom are eternal and unchang- ing, they are continually made new to every person who encoun- ters them. Throughout history great change has only been made by those hungriest for Truth and those not content to simply follow the beliefs of others, but who instead demand the genuine revela- tion of coming to know God personally.Those who will accept no less than that are the ones who become world changers. “And how about you? Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 13 Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” Jesus and Peter (Matthew 16:15–18 THE MESSAGE) The rock Jesus spoke of here was the revelation of Jesus as the Christ that Peter expressed: Jesus as God’s anointed Son, and Jesus as one’s personal Lord and Savior. It is upon that rock that Jesus has always built His church. And it is without this revelation that peo- ple are led astray, even people of the established church, who seek power and position because they don’t know the wealth that exists in the Truth of the Gospel. 001-108_JesusFrks-Vol2_Revolutionaries 10/15/10 10:55 AM Page 14 Jesus Freaks II What Is TRU t h ? Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me.” “And what is truth?” Pilate asked. Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them, “I cannot find any reason to condemn him.” Jesus and Pilate (John 18:37–38 TEV) In this exchange is the summary of preaching the Gospel to 14 the blind world. “Here is the Truth, right in front of you!” “What truth?” Those who would be blind don’t see it. Yet those who hunger for truth will. Many don’t know they are hungry for it. Others have searched their whole lives for it and never find it until someone exposes them to it. But that is always the exchange: Those who know the truth must share it with others; those who don’t know it have to decide whether or not they will receive it. If they will receive it, then God will reveal it to their hearts if they will hunger and thirst for it. Why is Truth so elusive? Because Truth is not a list of beliefs or statements or mathematical formulas that can simply be memo- rized. It is not a philosophical system or the end of a journey where you can arrive and then be done. Truth is a Person—Jesus Christ— and knowing the Truth is a relationship. Just as getting to know a person takes time, getting to know Jesus can happen no faster. It happens day by day, meeting with Him, walking with Him, talking with Him, listening to Him, being with Him, and obeying Him. Where is the time for bitterness, hatred, depression, power mongering, judging others, and drawing lines between people if we are consumed with getting to know Jesus? If we are all busy searching for Truth and loving others as Jesus told us to, there are worlds of problems we will never get into, and there are worlds of problems we will help solve. For by whom has truth ever been discovered without God? By whom has God ever been found without Christ? By whom has Christ ever been explored without the Holy Spirit?     ANDREAS HAGER Christian Rock Concerts as a Meeting between Religion and Popular Culture Introduction Different forms of artistic expression play a vital role in religious practices of the most diverse traditions. One very important such expression is music. This paper deals with a contemporary form of religious music, Christian rock. Rock or popular music has been used within Christianity as a means for evangelization and worship since the end of the 1960s.1 The genre of "contemporary Christian music", or Christian rock, stands by definition with one foot in established institutional (in practicality often evangelical) Christianity, and the other in the commercial rock music industry. The subject of this paper is to study how this intermediate position is manifested and negotiated in Christian rock concerts. Such a performance of Christian rock music is here assumed to be both a rock concert and a religious service. The paper will examine how this duality is expressed in practices at Christian rock concerts. The research context of the study is, on the one hand, the sociology of religion, and on the other, the small but growing field of the study of religion and popular culture. The sociology of religion discusses the role and posi- tion of religion in contemporary society and culture. The duality of Chris- tian rock and Christian rock concerts, being part of both a traditional religion and a modern medium and business, is understood here as a concrete exam- ple of the relation of religion to modern society. The study of the relations between religion and popular culture seems to have been a latent field within research on religion at least since the 1970s, when the possibility of the research topic was suggested in a pioneer volume by John Nelson (1976).

In this dissertation the theory of religious economy is proposed as a valuable and highly serviceable methodological approach for the scholarly study of CCM. The theory of religious economy, or the marketplace approach, incorporates economic concepts and terminology in order to better explain American religion in its distinctly American context. In this study, I propose three ways in which this method can be applied. Firstly, I propose that CCM artists can be identified as religious firms operating on the “supply-side” of the religio-economic dynamic; it is their music, specifically the diverse brands of Christianity espoused there within, that can allow CCM artists to be interpreted in such a way. Secondly, the diversity within the public religious expressions of CCM artists can be recognized as being comparable to religious pluralism in a free marketplace of religion. Canonization date: July 8, 1862 by Pope Pius IX . SHORT BIOGRAPHY Philip was born in Mexico City in 1572. Though unusually frivolous as a boy, he joined the Reformed Franciscans of the Province of St. Didacus, founded in Mexico by St. Peter Baptista, with whom he suffered martyrdom later. After some months in the Order, Philip grew tired of religious life, left the Franciscans in 1589, took up a mercantile career, and went to the Philippines, another Spanish colony, where he led a life of pleasure. Later he desired to re-enter the Franciscans and was again admitted at Manila in 1590. After some years it was determined that he was ready for ordination and sent to Mexico for this, since the episcopal see of Manila was vacant at that time, and thus no bishop was available locally to ordain him. He sailed on July 12, 1596, but a storm drove the vessel upon the coast of Japan. The governor of the province confiscated the ship and imprisoned its crew and passengers, among whom were another Franciscan friar, Juan de Zamorra, as well as three other friars, two Augustinians and a Dominican. The discovery of soldiers, cannon and ammunition on the ship led to the suspicion that it was intended for the conquest of Japan, and that the missionaries were merely to prepare the way for the soldiers.

    Visual Representations of Christianity in Christian Music Videos ANDREAS HÄGER Åbo Akademi University Abstract This article discusses Christian rock videos. Videos from a collection entitled Wow Hits 2002: the year’s top Christian music videos are used as examples. The title of the collection declares that the videos are “Christian”, and the question asked in the article is how this quality may be seen in the videos. How may the videos be seen as visual representations of Christianity? Using a semiotic framework, two possible types of such representations of Christianity in the videos are discussed. These are references to traditional Christian imagery; and the style and appearance of the artists. This article discusses Christian rock videos as an example of the interaction between religion and popular culture. The genre of “contemporary Christian music”, or Christian rock, by being rock music as well as an expression of Christianity, stands with one foot in institutional (often evangelical) Chris­ tianity and the other in the secular commercial music industry. This article studies how this ambiguous position is manifested in Christian rock videos.
