Malang, May 7, 2015 Ahmad Husaini An analysis of leadership style reflected by Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” novel by Mario Puzo Abstract Literature is an art of expressing thought and sense through creative product. By learning literature, it does not only to improve our knowledge and attitude but also give a pleasure. This study discussed one of Mario Puzo’s novels entitled “The Godfather”, the story told about a great leader of mafia gangster who has images of extraordinary leadership to protect his family and all people around him. The writer analyzed Vito Corleone’s leadership style in “The Godfather” novel; there are two statement of problems in this undergraduate thesis, namely 1) What kinds of leadership style are reflected by Vito Corleone 2) What are the effects of leadership style reflected by Vito Corleone toward his organization. The design used in this study was qualitative while the data are displayed in the form of descriptive. The data were taken concerning on phenomena of Vito Corleone’s leadership style in “The Godfather” novel. The writer used mimetic approach because the novel’s ideas or forms contain imitation or reflection of the world and human life. In collecting data, the writer read and understood the novel, chose the data dealing with the problems, which become the focus of the study, namely leadership style and rewriting all of the data, and identified them based on the original quotation in the novel. The result of this study showed the kinds of leadership style : 1) charismatic leadership style: Don Vito Corleone refused Sollozzo’s offer to join narcotics business, Don Corleone met with the heads of the rival families to discuss on a ceasefire and not seek revenge for Sonny's killing; 2) transactional leadership style: Amerigo Bonasera came for asking help to Vito Corleone about his daughter humiliation, and Johnny Fontane came for asking help to Vito Corleone about his career; 3) transformational leadership style: Don Vito Corleone explained and clarified to Tom Hagen about his position in the family business and Michael Corleone as the head of family, and Vito told Michael that he expected the Family's enemies would try to kill Michael by using an inside man. The Corleone family had several effects because Vito’s leadership style, they were: 1) The Corleone family had large relations; 2) The Corleone Family earned respect and loyalty; 3) The Corleone family became the most powerful mafia organization in the United States. • LA FAMIGLIA the Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks
LA FAMIGLIA The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks Eva Carlestål LA FAMIGLIA The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks Dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Anthropology presented at Uppsala University in 2005 ABSTRACT Carlestål, Eva, 2005. La Famiglia – The Ideology of Sicilian Family Networks. DICA, Disser- tations in Cultural Anthropology, 3. 227 pp. Uppsala. ISSN 1651-7601, ISBN 91-506-1791-5. Anthropological data from fieldwork carried out among a fishing population in western Sicily show how related matrifocal nuclear families are tightly knit within larger, male-headed networks. The mother focus at the basic family level is thereby balanced and the system indi- cates that the mother-child unit does not function effectively on its own, as has often been argued for this type of family structure. As a result of dominating moral values which strong- ly emphasise the uniqueness of family and kin, people are brought up to depend heavily upon and to be loyal to their kin networks, to see themselves primarily as parts of these social units and less so as independent clearly bounded individuals, and to distinctly separate family members from non-family members. This dependence is further strengthened by matri- and/or patrivicinity being the dominant form of locality, by the traditional naming system as well as a continual use of kin terms, and by related people socialising and collaborating closely. The social and physical boundaries thus created around the family networks are further streng- thened by local architecture that symbolically communicates the closed family unit; by the woman, who embodies her family as well as their house, having her outdoor movements restric- ted in order to shield both herself and her family; by self-mastery when it comes to skilfully calculating one's actions and words as a means of controlling the impression one makes on others; and by local patriotism that separates one's co-villagers from foreigners.

  • Cases and Materials on the Outfit
Rosen: Cases and Materials on The Outfit David Rosen Don Corleone to Sonny, in The Godfather The Don sighed. "Well, then I can't talk to you about how you should behave. Don't you want to finish school, don't you want to be a lawyer? Lawyers can steal more money with a briefcase than a thousand men with guns and masks. " Robert Warshow, in "The Gangster as Tragic Hero" Thus, the importance of the gangster film, and the nature and intensity of its emotional and esthetic impact, cannot be measured in terms of the place of the gangster himself or the importance of the problem of crime in American life. Those European movie-goers who think there is a gangster on every comer in New York are certainly deceived, but defenders of the "positive" side of American culture are equally deceived if they think it relevant to point out that most Cases and Materials Americans have never seen a gangster. What matters is that the experience of the gangster as an experience of on art is universal to Americans. There is almost nothing we understand better or react to more readily or with The Outfit quicker intelligence. This night, though, Pam had a different tale to tell. She announced that she and her friend Annie, the daughter of a prize-winning biologist, had gone to see "The Godfather," that they had been so deeply moved that, instead of going home, she'd gone tripping around town in search of the Mafia. I remember one night Pam showed up at the House at "The Mafia!" three in the morning.

  • The Family Is the Foundational Social Unit in Which Humans Participate
Safavi: Of Earls, Kings, and Dons Safavi 1 Of Earls, Kings, and Dons: Examining the Interplay between Individual and Collective Interests in Families Amir Safavi, Columbia University The family is the foundational social unit in which humans participate. While a family may have fewer constituents than other social units, such as nations, the family may be more complex, as personal boundaries are blurred by intimacy. The needs and values of individual family members come into conflict not only with each other, but also with the necessities and conventions of the family as a collective entity. Authors and artists have regularly examined the issues and values of their respective societies through the lens of the family dynamic and its associated tensions. In turn, the topics addressed by these authors have served as a lens through which audiences can better understand the complexity of the bonds that bind a family together. William Shakespeare's King Lear and Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of Mario Puzo's The Godfather are examples of such texts. Shakespeare's play addresses the dialectic between the natural and the unnatural, with regard to human nature and political legitimacy. Coppola's film sheds light on the immigrant experience in early twentieth century America, the tensions between old world traditions and those of the new country, and the underground Mafia culture of the United States. King Lear presents the Gloucester and Lear families, while The Godfather tells the story of the Corleone family. An analysis of these families suggests that personal interests cannot coexist with conflicting interests of the family.

Amongst various factors that influence the process of translating a novel the article focuses on two of them: a translator should stick to the original text with taking the semantic fields differences into account while s/he should keep the atmosphere of the source language, making as little changes in the target language as possible. Marking a translator’s existence in a text is strongly connected with a perlocutionary act. A great example of the translation that covers both principles is The Godfather, written by Mario Puzo and translated from English into Polish by Bronisław Zieli ński. He translated only English words into Polish, leaving the target Italian words with no metamorphosis. The article presents the effect obtained by such an action. Keywords : emotions, reader, the godfather, translation, translator. 1. Introduction A translator ought to have some peculiar skills and is undoubtedly seen as a person whose responsibility of the usage of the language is one of the highest. Not only is s/he expected to be an absolute specialist about the language itself, but also a linguist with a great command of writer’s abilities.

Robinson. But there was a vital difference. Its examination of the Corleone family had a consistently human dimension that made the evil of the Mafia, who loved it for the wrong reasons, all the more horrendous. As a study of evil, it was all the better for assuming that such darkness emanated not from dyed-in-thewool villains but out of some of the family values we now most cherish. Added to that, of course, was the brilliance of its making, with Gordon Willis’ photography and Nino Rota’s score adding to Coppola’s fine orchestration of a terrific cast.
