It started inin their first season as an expansion team, and it lasted until the penultimate game of the season, when they defeated Archie Manning and the New Orleans Saints The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition the road. Ashamed for our people, our fans, the organization, everybody. This was no ordinary streak. It was an existential curse that unfolded week after week, with Johnny Carson leading the charge on The Tonight Show. They were coached by the ever-quotable college great John McKay, whose press conferences were infamous. The Yucks is an unforgettable and hilarious account of athletic futility and despair. That is the message that comes through in The Yucks. Wonderfully done. Vuic is as hard on the Western capitalism that fleetingly embraced the car as he is on the socialist system that produced it. Entitled The Yugo: The Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in Historythe book is an in-depth, brisk, and hilarious chronicle of the economic, mechanical, political, and cultural calamities that conspired to unleash this motorized monster on the American populace. Vuic's history is a fascinating read, and an instructive one for the present moment. Its true genius, however, is its fine focus not on the Yugo itself, but on Bricklin the man—an outsized opportunist, a thick-skinned mega-capitalist whose modus operandi was to overpromise and underdeliver, a Mr. Magoo oblivious to the wreckage all around him, a charming marketing manipulator who realizes he has crossed the line The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition when the subpoenas start flying. In short, a fascinating story well told. Vuic uses the fatally well-publicized Yugo as the hook for a funny, tightly written book traversing politics, economics, marketing, communications, consumer safety and dread —and lots of spin. Yes, they were bad enough that Johnny Carson regularly used them as a punch-line during his "The Tonight Show" era. There was a "What to you think of your team's execution, coach? There was a fair amount of talent and money involved on the field and in the office, though things often still fell apart and it is humorously documented here by author Vuic. Some of the decisions made team colors, the 'Bucco Bruce' logo, salaries, draft picks will have even the most fair-weather sports fans shaking their head. Vuic did an especially nice job with the biographical segments - such as on defensive line coach Abe GIbron or gentle giant - with the involved personalities. They became a national joke, regularly featuring as the punchline on Johnny Caron's Tonight Show. They wore uniforms lovingly mocked as being creamsicle in color, and their winking, effeminate mascot was out of place in the testosterone driven world of the s . Of course none of that would have mattered had they won. But they lost. Starting inthe Bucs Perhaps no professional sports team has been so ubiquitous for being so bad than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Starting inthe Bucs would go on to lose their first 26 regular season games, some games failing to put up a single point on the board. Their owner was a notorious cheapskate who painted the team facility walls white so that he wouldn't have to buy a projection screen for reviewing game tape. His refusal to pay players would ultimately cost him Bo Jackson and super-bowl winning Doug Williams. He exhausted his players with two-a-day practices in the triple digit heat, and his roster became a revolving door. It wasn't uncommon for a player to join the Bucs on a Monday and be gone by Wednesday. At one point, they tried out their Coke delivery man because they thought he might be able to kick balls. McKay became more famous for his one-liners than his coaching skill. When asked how he felt The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition his team's execution, he notoriously answered: "I'm all for it. I would not recommend this book for people who aren't. If you don't know game terminology, you won't get a lot out of this book. For fans, however, both of the team and the sport, this book is a bit of fun to get you ready for the upcoming season. I won this book in a The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition drawing. A very thorough, well researched history of the first two seasons of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when they lost a staggering 26 games in a row. The book goes into the origins of the team, and how it wound up in Tampa, instead of an actual city. The owners, the players, the fans, and inevitably, the reporters. Very interesting. One on Tampa getting an NFL franchise, another on assembling the team, The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition third on the preseason, and the last one is on the Bucs in the 40 years after their infamy. Upshot: that's way too little on what shoul Good, but not great. Upshot: that's way too little on what should be the book's main focus, the team's first 26 games. And way too much on what happened before their first game. Vuic previously did a book on the Yugo I liked. I guess he's found his niche. He writes about historic duds. Sure, why not. View 2 comments. Along the way, there are characters who would be considered unrealistic if fictional. Jul 11, Lance rated it it was amazing Shelves: arcown-a- copynet-galleyblogfootballsports. Not because of their excellent play, but because they put together an incredible losing streak by losing all 14 of their games in and the first 12 games of the season in When they finally ended the streak by defeating the New Orleans Saints, it was such an embarrassment that the Saints fired Hank Stram. It was a road game, so when the Buccaneers returned hom The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the National Football League in and immediately became a nationally-known team. It was a road game, so when the Buccaneers returned home that evening, over fans were at the airport to greet the team. Their Bucs had been a national punch line for so long, they were just happy that it was finally over. The adventures of this beleaguered team and the stories behind the losing are captured The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition this often hilarious, always entertaining book by Jason Vuic. His previous work was about the Yugo, probably the worst car ever sold in the United States, so it just seemed natural that he would follow up with a book on the worst football team in the history of the NFL. The Bucs were considered even worse than the who also went through an entire season without a win. The book chronicles the arduous route taken for the Tampa area to secure an NFL franchise and the expansion draft that left very few talented players for the Bucs to build their team. Much of the humor in the book comes from the caustic first coach in Bucs history, John McKay. There are many quotes from McKay that will leave the reader laughing hard, even if it is the one hundredth time he or she has heard that one. It was one of the reasons given that the team The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition so bad, but no amount of money could have bought the publicity that the Buccaneers had when the losing streak lasted into and was often the subject of many jokes from late night television legend Johnny Carson. It was at this time when the team became a beloved group of losers in much the same manner as the New York Mets. The country started paying attention and the tension mounted within the team to finally break the streak. Readers of the book will feel the same tension, even if they were already familiar with the history of the team and the streak. Even though I remember the game well, I was cheering with joy when they beat the Saints and ended the streak and the jokes. This book is best for football fans or readers familiar with the lingo of the game as it is full of this type of text. However, the humor in the book will make any reader laugh loud and long and for that reason alone, this book is one that every football fan should add to his or her library.

Along with their ridiculous mascot and uniforms, which were known as "the Creamsicles," The Yucks Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History 1st edition Yucks were a national punch line and personnel purgatory. Owned by the miserly and bulbous-nosed Hugh Culverhouse, the team was the of the line for Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida hero , and a banishment for former Cowboy defensive end after he wrote a tell-all book about his time on "America's Team. They were coached by the ever-quotable college great John McKay. They were a gambit by promoters, journalists, and civic boosters to create a shared identity for a region that didn't exist--Tampa Bay. Before the Yucks, "the Bay" was a body of water, and even the worst team in memory transformed Florida's Gulf communities into a single region with a common cause. The Yucks is "a funny, endearing look at how the Bucs lost their way to success, cementing a region through creamsicle unis and John McKay one-liners" Sports Illustrated.
